following Real Madrid…

Cristiano and Iker at El Larguero

Iker and Cristiano Ronaldo were two of the guests at the celebration of El Larguero’s 20th anniversary on Oct. 26.  I liked both their interviews, and so here are my highlights from each one.

Cristiano (who has grown on me):

– he said he’s normally a timid person, but it depends on the situation

– when asked how he was when he was a 10-year-old, he said, “muy pequeño” (a small kid)

– he cries once in a while (but for both good and bad things)

– he said he’s very sentimental and romantic, when he has to be

– he didn’t speak any English when he arrived in Manchester as an 18-year-old, and he learned English “bien, bien, bien” from a girlfriend

– he’s very happy in Real Madrid and feels like this club is the best place for him, and he had told his family before that this was a club that he had to play at, one day

– his mother is a madridista, and he respects her because she and his father brought him into this world

– during the season, he’s a complete professional, but on vacation, he gets to have fun and do what he wants

– he has learned to like reading

– he won’t change to please others

– he is very happy living in Madrid

– he doesn’t have a girlfriend at the moment (the question everyone wanted to know the answer to)

– when asked if any girl has ever made him cry, he said “llorar de alegría, sí” (cry from happiness, yes)

– he wouldn’t sign anyone from the current Barcelona team if he could

Iker:

– The Beard: his mother likes it, because it reminds her of Iker’s father

– he didn’t get his driver’s license until February 2000, even though he debuted with the first team in September 1999, so he used to take the metro

– in that time, they used to call him “nene”

– one time while he was on the metro, a man in front of him was reading a newspaper that had Iker on the cover, and that was a bit strange for him

– Fernando Hierro tells a story about how he gave Iker 1,000 duros for a taxi, but Iker took the metro and kept the money, but Iker says this wasn’t the case – what happened was that he was in one side of Móstoles and he had to go to his high school by taxi so Hierro gave him 5,000 pesetas and Iker paid him back with interest

– he doesn’t mind being called San Iker because he knows that people call him that affectionately

– he still goes to Móstoles a lot and still has his old friends there

– he thinks everyone should be aware of how others in the world live (referring to his trip to Sierra Leone)

– he wants to win a lot more titles with Madrid and the national team, and to grow as a football player
