your daily RM round-up

December 19, 2009

Ok, I need to think of a new title for these types of posts, but I’m too lazy to do it right now.  Madrid trained yesterday, and then after:

One. Iker was on El Tirachinas, and although this is a radio program, we got to see pictures of him there, and he looked good*.  Here are the questions and answers I thought worthy of highlighting (In case you haven’t noticed, I like translating them on my own instead of relying on the web site’s translations).

What remains of the Iker from the beginning? Above all, ilusión (I don’t know the exact translation for this in English, it’s like a combination of hope and enthusiasm).  The ilusión of getting better, winning titles, giving ilusión to the people.  The day I lose it will be the day I say goodbye to football.

And also modesty. I’ve had people teach me how to be a Real Madrid player.

The new players, do they adapt to life in Madrid by themselves, or do the veterans help them out? A bit of everything.  You have to take into account that the squad is very young.  You have to keep the young ones in line and explain to them what is right and wrong… It’s not easy adapting to change.

– People are talking a lot about if Madrid needs to sign a central defender or a winger after Pepe’s injury.  What do you think? There is another option.  We have a youth program with young players and we can give them the opportunity.  This year, the defensive line is deep in terms of depth.

– Madrid is in a period of transition with regards to the captains.  Raúl is no longer a guaranteed starter, and sometimes you wear the captain’s stripes on the field.  Are you wearing them out of consensus? In this club, there is a captain, that is Raúl, and then there are two more, Guti and me.  It’s true that the club has told Guti and me that we have to help assimilate the new players on the field, in training and on trips.  It’s also true that since Salgado left, I’ve had more duties as third captain.

– In addition to being a good football player, Casillas is also a player who helps others. Last year, I was in Bamaki, Mali.  We went to help eradicate violence in classrooms.  Teachers there sometimes take matters into their own hands, and we need to put limits to that.  A lot of people help out without recognition.  But those who are public figures can use that to let people know what is going on and do something about it.

* from the waist-up – no pictures showed what kind of bottoms he was wearing, and as we all know, he has questionable taste in jeans and shoes.

Two. realmadrid.com and Benzema celebrated his birthday one day early, and he gave his thoughts on Madrid drawing Lyon in the next phase of the Champion’s League.  He spoke Spanish, but he sounds much, much sexier in French.  So people, stop forcing him to speak Spanish!  And bon anniversaire Karim!

Three. More reactions to Lyon from pictures and a video on the club’s site.  Sergio wore what looked like a red pleather jacket and a hat in which his hair curled perfectly out of.  Marcelo felt the need to tell us that he was in the shower when he heard the news.  Kaká and Pipita looked quite adorable, so I’m including their pictures.
