your irreverent Madrid trivia of the day

Remember this photo shoot back in September?
Well Marca thinks that this was the cause for Madrid’s early exit from the Champions League.
Marca tells us that according to Madrid legend, whoever touches the cup will not win it. This legend dates back to the Di Stéfano era, and apparently, everyone knows this, from the president to the guard at gate 52 of the stadium.
Nevertheless, one of the employees of Madrid’s communications department had the brilliant idea of making this season’s new players pose with the cup in a report published on the web site.
As you can see below, in my little guide on how to pose with the cup, everyone, with the exception of Cristiano Ronaldo, touched it. Ironically, he was the only one that almost won the cup for us after that.
So can we blame Madrid’s front office for the loss?
This story was buried on page 8 of today’s [2010-03-16] edition so I don’t think you’re supposed to take it really seriously but if you notice (and I went back to check), both Sergio and Iker did not touch the cup when they posed with it in Marca and AS, respectively.

TOUCHERS D:
I think Fernando Morientes had a lot to say about this, and about the placement of the cup in relation to which side of the winning and losing club walked out onto the pitch (right side?) or side of the fans, it was the season he was on loan with Monaco and they had lost. …Wish I had it, but (most of) what Morientes says goes in my opinion.
My lovely Garay is not touching it either!
