Real Madrid at Las Fallas

March 21, 2010

Yesterday marked the culmination of the Las Fallas festival, held in Valencia each year, when the fallas are burnt as huge bonfires during La Nit del Foc.

It’s very common for the fallas to have satirical themes, so of course Real Madrid was represented this year.  One featured Cristiano Ronaldo looking into a mirror.  The caricature kind of looks like those of his namesake, Ronald Reagan, no?

Cristiano says to the mirror (translated from valenciano):

It’s not true, dear Florentino

The man with the ‘bulletproof’ checkbook,

Who changed my destiny

Have you gotten more publicity?

Mirror, you tell the truth

I’ll pass on the Liga and the Copa

The one I really want to win

Is the title of ‘metrosexual’ of Europe.

Another satirized Florentino and his three big (foreign) signings from last summer, Cristiano, Kaká and Benzema (to me, Cristiano looks a bit like Albiol).  Benzema’s thumbs up and Cris’s six-pack are right on the money!  Speaking of money, I love the moneybags!

Here are some pictures of this one burning:

However, this is not the first year that Madrid has been featured in Las Fallas

In 2005, I found this while at Las Fallas.  I had no idea (and still don’t) what it means (I’m guessing it has something to do with the galácticos), but I had to take a picture anyway.

And in 2006, we had this lovely portrayal of Roberto Carlos, Ronaldo and Becks (doesn’t Becks look like Ramón Calderón here?):

I think it is sooooo disgraceful of casillas to make himself to a ‘la rosa prensa wanna bee’. 2008 he was known for his marvellous safe. And 2010, to be smootching a pin up presentadora. How tacky is that?

I used to think the world of him – but now I just find him embarassing.
