Sergio’s back in Spain after spending the last several days in Senegal, and according to Hola, he’s made Zahara de los Atunes in Cádiz his vacation spot for this summer.  But I wouldn’t rule out seeing him in Ibiza sometime later on!  Anyway, he spoke to Marca after coming back from Senegal, and here is the Real Madrid portion of his interview.  I especially love the parts where he talks about the Senegal trip.

You can find the part of the interview where he talks about la selección here!

I hate to keep on repeating myself, but there are people out there ignoring me.  Please credit Marca/this blog if you reproduce the interview or repost the picture elsewhere!

Q:  What are your feelings as to the upcoming season?

A:  Good, I’m facing it like all others, with a maximum amount of hope.  I have a lot of desire on the personal and team levels.  I really want to continue winning titles, above all the Champions League, which is one of the ones I haven’t won.  I have the hope of continuing to grow as a footballer, continuing to learn.

Q:  You played at a very high level during the World Cup.  Do you feel like you’re at the peak of your career?

A:  I would say yes.  Last season, I recovered well and I felt like I did during my first years at Real Madrid and in the first division.  The truth is that it’s an enormous satisfaction on a personal level to have finished the year as world champions.  Ending in this manner, and playing really well makes one happy.

Q:  How do you think this upcoming season with José Mourinho will be like?

A:  I hope it will be full of triumphs and titles.  Florentino’s project is continuing.  It doesn’t bring results in just one year and now he’s reinforcing the team as best he can to have a great group, a great bench and a great amount of companionship in the locker room, and that will bear fruit.

Q:  Do you think the old debate about Sergio Ramos, central defender or Sergio Ramos, fullback will start up again?

A:  I’m sure of it.  I don’t have the least bit of doubt that it will continue to be debated.  I think the best person to answer this is Mourinho, who is the person that will use me as centerback or fullback.  I’ve always said that I’m open to playing either position.  I’ve played both for years and I believe I dominate them.

Q:  Which of those do you feel more comfortable in?

A:  I feel comfortable as long as I’m playing.

Q:  Do you think Madrid will end Barcelona’s hegemony this year?

A:  I hope so.  It’s clear that in the last seasons we’ve been the two best teams and that the rivalry is growing.  It’s true that Barcelona has reinforced itself well and they have an extraordinary team.  But that’s why we’re here, to compete and go against the best.  I think it’s going to be a competitive and fun to watch league.  Well, not only La Liga, but also the Champions League and the Copa del Rey will also be competitive.  We hope to be fighting for all three.

Q:  Can the madridismo dream about La Décima this season?

A:  I have a lot of illusion towards winning this title.  I would love to win the Champions League, and I think Madrid’s fans deserve to see their team win La Décima.

Q:  You delayed your vacation to travel to Senegal with UNICEF.  What did you get out of this trip?

A:  I’ve learned a lot.  It’s important to be able to live through an experience like this one.  There are images that will stay in my memory forever.  You realize the true values of life.  You see so many children without education, without access to basic nutrition, with difficult access to sanitation… they don’t have anything, but they’re always happy.  That’s incredible.  I’ve been filled with energy to keep on living.

Q:  Are you planning on making more trips like this one?

A:  Whenever UNICEF asks me to, Sergio Ramos will be there to help with whatever they need.

Q:  There are people in Senegal that are asking if your relationship with UNICEF will one day include wearing the shirt of Barcelona, which has the logo of this organization.

A:  (Laughs).  It’s easier for UNICEF to agree to be on Madrid’s shirt than for me to wear the shirt of Barcelona.
