meet the canteranos – the pre-season five
As stated before, five canteranos have traveled with the first team to Los Angeles. They are, from left to right Juanfran, Nacho Fernández, Marcos Tébar, Álvaro Morata and Álex Fernández. They are all quite adorable!
Marcos Tébar is one of those players who joined Madrid at an early age (in his case, 12, with the Infantil B team) and rose through the youth ranks. He is now 23 years old and has played as a midfielder with Castilla since 2006, making his debut with the first team against Osasuna at the end of the 2008-09 season. He returns to Madrid from a loan spell at Girona and he and Esteban Granero could pass as brothers!
Juanfran, or Juan Francisco Moreno Fuertes, is a 21-year-old forward. His career started in Avance, in Alcalá. When he was 17, he moved to Getafe, where he made his Liga, Copa and UEFA Cup debuts. He was then ceded to Villarreal B and last summer, Castilla signed him. He debuted with Real Madrid’s first team against Osasuna at the end of last season.
Nacho and Álex are brothers (Nacho is the older one at 20 years of age, Álex is the younger one, at 18 years of age). The former played as a defender with Castilla last season, while the latter is a midfielder that just received his promotion to Castilla from the Juvenil A team. They’ve never played in a game together before, and their dad Chema says they’re desperate to do so. Meanwhile, their mom Maite says that last week when Madrid put up the list of players traveling to the United States, Álex and Nacho went to look separately, and the first thing they did was to see if the other was on the list before checking to see if they themselves made it. Their parents say they’ve always been very close, are good students and share a room at home (where they make their beds every morning). Maite adds that she has driven approximately 198,000 km to take the two boys to training sessions (and during two years, one in the morning and one in the afternoon), which is equivalent to five trips around the world. Álex and Nacho would become the sixth pair of brothers on the first team if they both make it. The brothers live with their parents and younger sister Maite in Meco (Madrid).
And my new favorite, Álvaro Morata, is a center forward famed for his quickness. He’s the baby of the five, at only 18 years old (meaning he is legal! He’s just eight days younger than Álex), and was promoted to Castilla from the Juvenil B team. Fun fact: Álvaro is interested in medicine.
