can this pre-season just end already?

August 19, 2010

Some thoughts on the current situation at our club…

I wish for the pre-season to be over already not only because it seems like it’s been going on forever, and we still have 10 days to go before our first official game, but also because the friendlies are dangerous to our defenders!  Plus, I want the transfer window to be shut already, so we will know what the final squad looks like.  And with regards to the games, they have just been plain boring (trying to catch a glimpse of Sergio’s hair was the only reason that compelled me to watch the Standard Liège game).  I also want to start seeing jerseys with names on the back!!!  (It’ll help distract me from the ugliness of the font used for the numbers.)

The LA Galaxy game saw Pepe drop.  Then the Bayern Munich game saw us lose Garay.  And now the Standard Liège game has proved hazardous to the health of Raúl Albiol.  That means that Ricardo Carvalho is our only true central defender left; good thing we signed him then, isn’t it?

And speaking of signings, we now have too many midfielders, and not enough defenders or forwards it seems.  What is going through the minds of the Real Madrid president and directors?  And we also have to get rid of three players (TSO only wants 23 players), but no one seems to want to leave.  The ones most being “shopped” right now are Rafa van der Vaart, Lass, Diarrá, Drenthe and Gago.  Out of those, it would pain me to see Rafa leave, because he did an excellent job in the place of Kaká last season, and he’s been so professional, never complaining, even though his name has been on the “transfer list” for the last two seasons.  And because I would hate for Sylvie to leave us.  It wouldn’t surprise me if FP wanted to get rid of Rafa just for being a Calderón signing and no other reason.

The Spanish players (and by that I mean Granero) are all safe, because Madrid needs to have at least eight Spanish players (there are nine right now), four of which have to have come from the cantera to meet UEFA Champions League recommendations.  And with the departure of Raúl and Guti, Adán had to be promoted to the first team to help Madrid meet that requirement (Iker and Arbeloa being the other two).

Anyway, at least we know who won’t have the opportunity to get injured before the start of the season.  Cristiano, Sergio, Iker, Pipita and Xabi Alonso will be rested this weekend and won’t play in the match against Hércules (which is a bit of a shame, because I wanted to see Iker and Tote together again).  However, Sergio might be called up because as mentioned before, we don’t have too many healthy defenders left.

And speaking of Xabi and Cristiano, they have become the “unofficial” captains of Real Madrid, due to their leadership, attitudes and actions.  Cris is always the first one at practice and the last one to leave, he leads exercises during training sessions and raises his voice in the locker room.  And when Xabi talks, others listen to him.  Interestingly enough, they’re the ones wearing the “7” and “14” this season, the numbers left behind by the two previous captains, Raúl and Guti.  And according to Marca, the new captain, Iker, has undergone a transformation since putting on the captain’s armband.  According to a source in the club, he’s assumed the role of captain easily and has been accepted by his teammates.  Meanwhile, vice captain Sergio Ramos is also conscious of the weight of the armband and has become more serious (apparently, he now sings less in the locker room; too bad!  But we have the rap trio of Benzema, Özil and Drenthe to make up for that).

This pre-season has been boring. The players have been traveling too much and we’re still having the pre-season matches while the league’s just about to start.
    Cristiano leading? Wow.
I really hope Sergio starts his singing again. Remember him singing Pintame with Reina in the airplane back to Spain after the WC? That was pure skills haha!

very nice entry, I really enjoyed reading it!

and as much as I want the guys to have some rest I do hope some Sergio appears during the Bernabeu trophy, because I just got the tickets for it! man, I hope I’ll see maybe just the top of his head (it would be easier to spot him if the long hair were still there…lol).

Tickets to watch them play? *sniff* that would be the perfect ending for a pretty boring summer 😦 Hahaha gracing us with merely the top of his head would be fine by me! Have fun though!! (and try as hard as you can to stalk them..)

I am tired from just thinking about how many thousands of miles some of the guys have travelled in the last few months. Glad they are being rested. We love to see them but in games – but not so many that don’t really matter. There are really no such things as ‘friendlies’ as the guys (on both teams) give their all which means risk of injury.

Doesn’t Estaban Granero count as homegrown too?

Hope no more RM guys get injured

Yes, he’s part of the four that I was taking about: Granero, Adán, Iker and Arbeloa.

Yeah, what is everyone trying to kill our defenders? They’re going to have enough problems when La Liga *actually* starts, let’s not try to whack them all in the pre-season!

I don’t like thinking too much about who’s going to be sold – I’m not terribly attached to Drenthe, or Gago, so I don’t think it would bother me to see them go, but I’m quite fond of Lass and Rafa… 😦

As for our new capitanes, I’m most concerned that Sergio “now sings less in the locker room” – this is bad. If he doesn’t keep singing, Cris might start. And we know how that will end. (Seriously, though, I’m glad the leadership situation is well in hand. Yay being responsible!)

OMG Jennifer you just made me laughing so hard with your comment on singingf in the lockers. LOL Thank you!!!

We all know Sergio is the best singer and as second captain he should know its better for the team atmosphere when he sings instead of Cris. =D

“Cris might start” LOL! I have never heard him sing, nor do I want to! That’s just disturbing..
But I must say, Sergio having a leadership role is quite a turn on, more of that please! Plus, it’s really cute that he’s making an effort to “change” even though he’s perfect the way he is!

Ohhh you have been missing out.

        Check this epic post: https://unamadridista.wordpress.com/2010/04/27/the-tuesday-face-off-vocal-skills/

Then cross your fingers and hope that Sergio take his job as singer and DJ as seriously as he takes his job as capitán. (Which is very hot, I agree.)

LOOOOOOOOL!!!! Jennifer, there are tears streaming down my face at this moment! Hahahaha Iker’s singing is just…out of this world..
And oh my God I’ve seen that long interview with Cris before, but I completely forgot about the singing in the car LOL how could I, right?
I have got to start reading the earlier posts before I discovered this life saving blog 😀

Glad to be of service haha :-p

I’m guessing you forgot about Cris’s singing as a sort of post-trauma defensive mechanism? Because that’s totally understandable.

(The archives are great, btw. I sat down and read all the way through in the early days of the WC, when I discovered the blogs!)

Oh, that is cute to learn about Xabi and Cristiano. Less surprising for Xabi (he just seems to inspire authority, people SHOULD listen), but good on CR for stepping up!

Can you explain your abbreviations please? I really don’t understand when you say for instance TSO or FP. You have so many of them, I just don´t understand what they mean or who you refer.

    • August 20, 2010 01:34

TSO = The Special One = José Mourinho
      FP = Florentino Pérez
Are there any other ones that you need me to explain?
