I love team bonding events

Prelude: Sergio’s hair is back to looking good, mainly because it looks like his hair of old, just shorter in the back. I hated the side part and the bangs, and love the center part. He’s looking at lot like René in this photo, no?
I love it when the entire team goes out together, because I find team bonding activities so cute, and also because it inevitably turns into a fashion do’s and don’ts, Real Madrid edition. The previous edition can be found here, and as you can see, despite the influx of new players, there have not been a lot of improvements!
But first, some words on the lunch. It was held at Asador Casa Juan (C/ Infanta Mercedes 111), a Basque restaurant (not surprising at all) specializing in fish and meats. FYI: the restaurant was opened by the ex-maître d‘ of Asador Donostiarra, who is (again, not surprising) named Juan. The entire coaching staff and squad were there for the lunch, which began at 13h and ended around 16h. Real Madrid’s site says that Raúl Albiol was the last one to leave, maybe because he was incapacitated by the crutches? Garay and Kaká were also on crutches. (I imagine if Drenthe or Sergio had to use crutches, they would somehow bedazzle them or find some way to match them to their outfits). Anyway, the lunch was the idea of the two new captains, Iker and Sergio, who handled the organization. The former, the coach and the new players also made some short speeches during the meal.
Keep reading to find out what the players had for lunch, what neat trick Iker & Sergio pulled off before the luncheon, another reason why Rafa needs to stay and a fashion review!
The two captains took charge of the final bill, which came to about €2,000, although they had also requested that the new players hand over their credit cards before they could enter the restaurant. That amount wasn’t too bad, considering what they had. As appetizers, jamón ibérico, tomato and tuna salad, cheese mousse, fried cod fritters and grilled goose “foie.” The first entrée was a seafood platter with small crabs, shrimp, crayfish and prawns. For the second entrée, the players had a choice between fish (sole, cuttlefish or monkfish), or grilled meat. For dessert, ice cream and fruit. And to drink, water and soft drinks. Each also were given bottles of wine from Casa Juan’s winery as a gift (that’s what they were carrying when they left the restaurant).
And one more reason why Rafa van der Vaart cannot leave: what would the Germans (Khedira and Özil) do without him? He’s been helping out with translating to make sure the two of them feel comfortable. With Rafa gone, the Germans’ adaptation process will take much longer. In addition, they both seem quite reserved and laid back, so they might not always take the initiative to adapt.
And now onto the fashion review! Even though we’re sorely missing Guti for his dazzling contributions to this type of event/post, the outfits of the players still provided something to discuss. They could be divided into several categories:
The classics
These were the guys that didn’t take much of a fashion risk on Friday. Plain tees, plain polos, aviators or Ray-bans… the art of simple dressing. It’s not surprising that Kaká or Xabi (after all, the word classy is defined by a picture of Xabi) falls into this category. I’m also liking Sergio Canales’ plaid shirt – I wonder who picked it out: him or his mom? It reminds me of Xabi in Esquire. And no one wears aviators quite like Álvaro Arbeloa – he always looks amazing in them.
The special ones
In this case, I’m not talking about José Mourinho, but the players who brought a personal flare to their outfits. Unsurprisingly, Royston Drenthe fell into this category, with Pepe included because it looked like he was going to go golfing after lunch.

The jean shorts
Apparently, jean shorts are all the rage among Spanish footballers who like to dress casual! Raúl Albiol, Iker and Pedro León all sported denim shorts.

The tees
The wild and wonderful world of Real Madrid’s players’ t-shirt collections… At least we now know that Mesut Özil is NOT an alcoholic, and that Esteban Granero had gone shopping during his time on UCLA’s campus. Pedro León apparently likes Madrid’s team colors a lot! Karim Benzema needs a new pose, and Marcelo’s shirt is indescribable, on par with Pepe’s during the last lunch. I’ll give it a shot though: is that an astronaut baby dressed like the Virgin Mary and throwing flower petals around?
The teases
That would of course be Cristiano Ronaldo and Sergio Ramos, both for wearing quite low-cut shirts. Cristiano’s sunglasses dragged down the vee of his v-neck, and Sergio most likely deliberately decided not to button the top two buttons of his shirt. We’re the winners here.
Both looked quite good, even if Cris’ pants were too short (he gets a pass because it’s no longer surprising).

The Iker
There’s no way to describe Iker and his outfit other than by giving him his own category, appropriately named after him as well. At first glance, the pink, striped polo didn’t look too bad (even if it is A&F, which I hate) but then I saw the rest of his outfit – cuffed denim shorts (David Villa springs to mind) and flip flops. And you KNOW the man bag is embroiled somewhere in that mess. Oh Iker. If you looked at the picture on the right, the words “captain of Real Madrid” don’t immediately come to mind, no?

I adore your comments about their outfits! lol Thanks!:)
The bill seems to be too small… Or do you mean that they paid 2000 euros for each teammate? They couldn’t possibly spend only 2000 on all of them! That would mean that each of them ate the amount of food equal to about 10 euro. 😀 Sounds unbelievable!!!:))
Thanks!
Let’s say there were 31 people there (26 players and five from the coaching staff). That would come out to about €65 per person, which is about right for that restaurant.
oh, my fault! you’re right! I lost my counting skills the moment I saw that gorgeous Sergio with a finally nice hairstyle! 😀
I agree about Alvaro’s aviators, they look really good on him for some reason. Not tacky at all!
Still weird that our old captains aren’t here anymore. If Iker would start dressing as well as Raul it would definitely help, yeah.
“If Iker would start dressing as well as Raul…”
Hahahahahahaha.
Would that we could be so blessed! He’s a saint, but I think that might be a little bit out of his reach!
I think Iker’s outfit is not that bad, he could have worn worse. The thing is that our captain is so lovely I most probably just turn a blind eye. In my eyes he is so handsome no matter what he wears, imagine if he dresses well – my heart won’t take it!
I think Sara ( she even has my name :)) is not trying to change her bf’s style because she doesn’t want fangirls to cling and swoon on him more than they already do! She can’t help him with shoes though, she has to help herself first!
Iker is really adorable whatever he wears; it’s like when you see Iker, just stare at his face. But I guess Sara is not the solution for his disastrous fashion sense, Iker could just not dress anything at all and it would be so much preferred. LOL
Ok hands down Sergio takes Best Dressed…im totally not biased at all 😉 And as for the hair, which is looking so so sooooo much better, well not only better but good actually, I like to think we all had a part in this. He obviously read how hurt we all were and moved quickly to make us all happy again!
I never thought I’d see the day, but I think… I think I might agree with you.
Sergio Ramos… Best-Dressed.
*brain explodes*
I think I might need a little more time to adjust to this idea…
He deserves at least one Best Dressed title haha…jeez everytime I come back to this post and see his pic at the top…i just….wooof! is the only way to describe my mental response!!!
Well, Sergio certainly did cause mass panic with his hairstyle didn’t he? It actually looks good (though I prefer it longer) and he looks gorgeous!!!
I wish Sara would start dressing Iker-we would maybe see an improvement.
I was laughing at the fashion scrutiny, because I agree on almost everything. I loved Cristiano and Xabi’s the most. Xabi is the most classy, he really embodies that, no doubt.
And Iker. Well, he’s just being Iker.
Oh Iker no, why does this have to hurt so badly? On the plus side, Ramos is looking FINE.
Did Sergio Ramos actually leave his home WITHOUT his manbag…….. Ö Did Cristiano Ronaldo and Iker Casillas do the same?
This calls for some investigations!!!
There is nary a sign of a manbag anywhere on Sergio’s person… maybe this is one of the many miracles of San Iker?
Maybe someone broke into his house, and stole his collection Ö Or he is just over it. Soooooo last season 😉
But Iker definitely has one in his left hand, tucked under his arm. Not that it makes that outfit any worse, mind you.
omg i LOL’d in real life at “the iker.”
he is just so… middle aged looking. 😦 someone needs to send him in for “what not to wear.”
canales and xabi for best dressed.
Your definitely right about Arbeloa. I’m starting to notice him more now and I don’t know how I didn’t notice how delicious he is when he played for Liverpool.
Also, why did they ask the new players to hand over their credit cards? I don’t get it!
To make them pay for the meal!
Thanks 🙂 I feel stupid now!
I love their little trick with the credit cards… so cute!
Also the mental image of Sergio on bedazzled crutches… while this is just one more example of your fabulous writing, it’s also so close to the truth that it’s scary!
So €2,000 in Canadian dollars is $2,662.76. I think I just died a little.
And I really love these fashion reports you do, even though after a while it becomes predictable; was it really a surprise to see Chris and Sergio dressed the way they were? Haha, man, I just love these guys.
I loved all of the fruitful fashion critique and the fact that you included the orders 😀
This comment would be too long if I described how great I thought some of them looked, but surely I must include a few honourable mentions:
Lol at Marcelo’s description, I love that guy!
Hahahahaha I can’t believe Iker got his own category! I couldn’t agree with you more. But you can’t expect him to have a great sense of style; someone that perfect would be creepy!
Last but most definitely not least, I think it’s quite inevitable who my favorite is. Oh how I’d love to knock off a few buttons off of that Greek God. Yay the parting’s back! El Ramos, you never disappoint 😀
Sergio and Granero looking the best (but I *am* biased!!)… doesn’t mean I’m wrong though :-p
Wouldn’t there be like a company credit card to sponsor these things? I thought there would be…so then did Iker and Sergio pay for the lunch out of their own pockets or did they all contribute? I thought them asking the new players to hand over their credit cards in the beginning was a joke…seems like it would’ve been awkward if it was for real….I don’t know why I care.
I agree. Did they REALLY pay for everyones meal? I mean, THEIR the guests right? Or at least, the newbies who should be welcomed with a free meal 😀
Anyhow- most of the fashion damage is being done, not by the new players, but by the veterans. Ronaldo, Ramos, Pepe and Drenthe all get a thumbs DOWN. Ozil, Sergieo II, Granero, Carvalho, Higuain (maybe Benz too) all get a thumbs UP. Good job guys, show em how it’s done 🙂
If Iker and Sergio are anything like my friends, they made the newcomers hand over their cards so they WOULDN’T be ABLE to pay! (When it is someone’s birthday and we are out for dinner as a group, we steal the birthday girl/boy’s wallet so they cannot pick up the tab for anything, no matter how tempted they are.)
And I think Iker & Sergio wanted to pick up the tab for this instead of putting it on the company card as their way of extending hospitality to their team (the guests) as the new captains (the hosts). A little bit of of a way to stamp their authority on the team, too. 😉
At least that is my take on how it went down!
Also, unamadridista, where do you get all this information if I may ask?
I feel like you HAD to have been there to find out all these random (but incredibly interesting) tid-bits. Are you a little bit more familiar with our Madrid players than you’re letting on? *winkwink*
yeh, I also don’t get why they didn’t want to pay for the newcomers… it’s really humiliating for them. what was the reason? Sergio and Iker are known to be very generous. Why on earth did they make them hand in their credit cards??
I know that in the US, it’s a common tradition for professional sports teams to have a big team dinner and actually make the new guys or the “rookies” pay for the entire meal. It’s kind of an initiation or “welcome to the team” moment. It’s all in good fun I guess, since they’re all pro athletes who earn millions. But from what I understand in this case, the new guys were just made to THINK they had to pay, right? But then Sergio and Iker actually paid for everyone’s meal since it was their idea for a team lunch…sort of like their gift/contribution as captains to the team.
I think Kylie is right…that seems to be the way it is.
And Iker? Well, every hero needs a tragic flaw. Any more perfectness and he would be too perfect! 🙂
Awesome Awesome Article.& a fantastic blog! LOVE IT!!
very nice…thanks! 😀
