Karim wakes up!

August 23, 2010

According to Marca, in the training session on Thursday, José Mourinho told Karim Benzema, in front of some of his teammates: “for you I should start the training session at 12, because at 10 you arrive asleep, and at 11 you’re still sleeping.”

If this was supposed to be motivation, it worked!  After Benzema scored two of Madrid’s three goals in the game against Hércules, Marca came up with these headlines:

The alarm clock rings for Benzema…

… and at 11, Benzema wakes up (he entered the game at 23h).

Let’s hope Karim stays awake for the entire season!!!

ALLEZ Karim!! Proud people we are 🙂 It hurted me that Mourinho humiliated him in front of teammates even if I know it was meant to create some fighting spirit. that is why Im SO happy he scored twice. Madridistas pleazz keep on believing in him, he’s gonna make it and help the team grow stronger!

I agree with Julie, I don’t like the fact that Mourinho actually said that to him in front of the team. It’s just completely rude and unethical, even though he might have done it to “wake Karim up”. I do hope Karim keeps this up, though! That first goal was quite stunning, I feel.

To me, when I read what he told Benz, I actually laughed- you see, these players take the sternest comments as a joke and I can only imagine them ALL laughing when Mou said it…
I’m pretty sure Benz took it easy and well as he woke up and scored.

Haha, a bit ironic- Mourinho says he’s asleep at 11 and he enters the field at 11 and scores two- I would love to see what Mourinho will tell him next!
Perhaps “Benzema, I told you I was somewhat right!” Haha.

Mou is supposed to be good at reading/understanding his players, maybe he knew that was the way to get the real Benzema to stand up.

Yeah you’re right. And we should all know Mou by now, it’s either you work hard or you’re not going to play.

U right girls and, as I said, Im sure Mourinho didn’t want to offence the guy or anythg bad but it was a bit harsh really… even if I fully understand that La Liga is not Care Bears land and I was sometimes mad at Benzema for being so sluggish, which is a shame for such a great player. Anyway, Hala Madrid!

Is it possible that he’s not 100% during training because he’s fasting for Ramadan? On the other hand he’s not the only one in the team fasting Mesut Özil, Sami Khedira, Lass, and Diarra are all doing the same.

I think they have been given a “let go”.
Islamic scholars have said that this year, professional athletes may break Ramadan fasting.

But if they’re fasting, then they’re on a different schedule than the rest of the players.

i don’t think kareem or the guys you mentioned are fasting because they all came to the lunch thingy no? they wouldn’t go just to sit around and watch other people eat right?

I reaaally doubt that he’s fasting. Is he that religious, especially since that little scandal occurred?
And whoa I didn’t know the other dudes were Muslims!! :O
I feel for them.. Today was the first day I go out in the morning during this Ramadan..lol I almost fainted..

For some reason, when coaches say things like that to me, I never perceive it as some sort of personal attack. So I’m sure it wasn’t said in an offensive manner to Benzema. Also, he did a great job in the match, so yay! 😀

That’s really funny, but I’m glad it worked as motivation.

Also – I think that it’s actually good that TSO and Benzema had it out in public, rather than in private or not at all. Reminds me of when Sergio Ramos and Aragonés had it out in front of the whole team a few years ago. Clears the air, as it were.

you are right. it really hard working when you are fasting but their competitive power remain the same ,even better.
