the international results

October 9, 2010

One international game down, one to go (for most of the players).  So, let’s take a look back on how the madridistas did.

Spain: Spain beat Lithuania 3-1 behind two goals from Fernando Llorente and David Silva (both have been linked with Madrid), with Sergio assisting on two of those goals.  Xabi caught a sore throat before the game, and thus had to watch from the stands (he looked good though).  Iker and Sergio started the game, and Sergio was subbed out in the 82nd minute (for teammate Álvaro Arbeloa) after he injured his right ankle.  Both Sergio and Xabi are expected to be back for the game against Scotland on Tuesday.  More on Spain’s game here.

Portugal: Portugal beat Denmark 3-1, and Cris scored one of those three goals.  Yay Cris!  Ricardo Carvalho also scored, because the Danish goal was his own goal.  He was paired up with Pepe in the center of the defense.  All three played the entire 90 minutes.

Germany: Mesut Özil played 89 minutes and scored a goal as Germany defeated Turkey 3-0.  However, he left the game with pains to his left ankle making him doubtful for the next game against Kazakhstan.  Sami Khedira played all 90 minutes.  Both played well.

Argentina: The albiceleste didn’t fare too well as they succumbed to Japan 0-1.  Pipita played 67 minutes as a sub, while Di María clocked in seven minutes at the end of the game.  Neither had great games.  But at least no one ended up injured!

France, Spain U-21, Mali: France will face Romania today, while Spain’s U-21 team takes on Croatia and Mali plays Liberia.

Did anyone see the letter Jose Mourinho wrote to Portuguese players? Maybe it doesn’t belong here (sorry for spamming your blog) but it’s really sweet, and an interesting perspective on national teams

Yeah, I know, right!? And considering Mourinho’s image of supposedly being cold and calculating, to show that much emotion and respect to his country is quite moving.

That’s an important lesson, and more of RM’s players should take notes…

Also wanted to ad, I was pleased to see Mesut score in the match against Turkey, though I did notice his subdued post-goal celebration.
