news on the newbies, Castilla… and even Barcelona!
Happy Monday!
With Mou closing off training again before the big Madrid-Milan game, there hasn’t been much tactical news filtering out of Camp Real Madrid, but we don’t really mind, since we’re interested in other things, right? And here are some of those things…
One. According to AS, these photos are from a report carried out by Real Madrid’s web site. So why are we seeing them here first, and not on the official web site? Anyway, the club got the six new players together yesterday, and took them around the Bernabéu. And of course, they got the requisite sound bites:
– Mesut: Mourinho is the perfect coach.
– Khedira: I’d like to win all three titles.
– Pedro León & Canales: this is the best club. Magnificent.
– all of them (in unison, presumably, after a cue card was held up): our dream is to go to Cibeles.
Here they are seeing what it’s like to be Iker. And crossed arms are definitely better than thumbs up.
Ricardo, over here! And yes, Sergio C.’s hair is back to normal!!!
With regards to the picture on the left, I almost expect them all to start doing high kicks in unison. And how convenient that four of them have lockers right next to each other.
The players also talked about each other, and as expected, they were very complimentary:
Di María on Carvalho: he’s a great central defender, he’s strong and fast. He’s triumphed on all the teams he’s played for. His experience is great for this young team.
Carvalho on Canales: he is very good with his left leg. He’s very young and has a margin to progress. We all know what kind of quality he can bring to the team.
Canales on Pedro León: he can destabilize a game and he has an incredibly powerful shot, one of the best I’ve seen. Those are his best assets. He’s the type of winger people were saying the team needed.
Pedro León on Khedira: physically, he’s a wonder. He’s going to help us out a lot. He does a great job in the middle of the field.
Khedira on Özil: my best friend here in Madrid. We spend a lot of time together, learning Spanish and practicing dance moves for the next goal celebration so that we’ll be able to join in. Cristiano won’t let us join in unless we can show him we can move. We played together on the German national team and I know his qualities well: he’s fast, intelligent, he sees football like no one else. He has a great future.
Özil on Di María: he’s a very vertical player and a very destabilizing one. He runs the wings well, he’s generous and he always looks for the best-positioned teammate. He makes football easy.
And now we go back to the important issues: who is your best dressed from this report? I like Sergio C, with Mesut taking the runner-up award. And I can totally imagine Pipita Higuaín in Ángel di María’s exact outfit – must be an Argentine thing (and what are those discolored patches??). The same goes for Ricardo Carvalho and Cristiano, although the jeans might fit just a bit more snugly.
Rest of the pictures here, from Madrid’s web site, which has just published the report. English version here.
Two. Castilla beat Conquense 1-0 yesterday, thanks to a goal by Javi H. (you know, Guti’s cousin). Juan Carlos had some good chances too. Other than the fact that Mou and Karanka were at the Alfredo di Stéfano watching the game (along with the stadium’s namesake), the big news was how the boys celebrated (the goal came in the 87th minute, so it was big).
Three. Sergio Ramos is expected to be ready for tomorrow’s game against Milan and could even start. He’s feeling better after medical treatment and physiotherapy, and will train with his teammates today after training alone yesterday.
Four. The idiot Robinho, in today’s Marca (only what he said about Madrid’s players, the rest I don’t care, because it’s coming from an idiot):
– the most important thing is for Milan to win, and if I score, better. Afterward, I’ll send a joking message to Iker.
– Sergio is a great friend, and a great fullback. It’ll be a great battle between us. We’ll see what happens.
In any case, we’re much better off with Cristiano.

Five. Zinedine Zidane told newspaper Le Parisien (why is he suddenly so chatty? He was never like this when he was a player) that he’s changed his mind about becoming a coach. He said, “three years ago, I would have said no to an offer. Now I ask myself, ‘why not?’ It could be that in three years time I’d be ready to transmit what I learned to young players.”
He added that he does not miss playing, although “I took the decision of retiring a bit prematurely. I could have played one or two more years. I was 34 and I told myself that it was better for me to stop playing before I was forced out.”
Of José Mourinho, Zizou said, he’s a “great coach who has won everything and now has to make Madrid win. He can do it, there was much discipline in Madrid but he has added even more.” Of Karim Benzema, his thoughts were: “he’s waiting for an inflection point that will allow him to become an indisputable starter. Last year, he didn’t have the support of Pellegrini or of his national team coach. This year, both coaches are counting on him. That’s great.”
Six. The workings of Barcelona bore me (the club, not the city – I love the city!) but this news is funny. On Saturday, Barcelona’s members met at a general assembly, and they passed a motion to bring the last board of directors, the one headed by Joan Laporta, to account for the €48.7 million lost during his presidency by suing them. Here are some of Laporta’s alleged expenditures – my favorite is the last one.
– €631,000 for 1,518 tickets for the final of the Champions League and €177,000 for tickets to the Final Four, all for internal use.
– €5 million for trips that had nothing to do with football, to places such as Abu Dhabi and Monaco.
– €1,514 for a hotel stay in Qatar by a director. The hotel opens next year.
– €90,000 for 1,644 tickets to see U2.
– €53,ooo charged to the credit card of Laporta’s bodyguard, including charges at restaurants and bars, and for cigars, drinks and perfume.
– €576,000 for catering in the presidential box, which works out to €20,000 per game.
– €516,000 for the personal security of Laporta and his home.
– €2 million in private detectives used to spy on members of the board of directors and journalists.

Were these items charged by his bodyguard?

1) very nice infos about new players! It all looks good in madrid, don;t you think? I am definitely seeing the bright future!
2) laporta – oh my, is he stupid to think noone would go and check his expenses, especially when the debts of football clubs are a discussed topic for some time? And the security – should he not pay from his own money for his own security? The last expense you metnioned is hilarious beyond absurd, man money do make people spoiled and going nuts!
I totally agree with those who passed the motion to make the board responsible for those costs – and – I hope that as a result – to pay them back!
3) I hope real will win tomorrow, and win big time! Unformtunately, I think I will not be able to watch the game. Do you know maybe if there’s any possibility to watch it somewhere in the internet later?
have a nice Monday!!!
Guys, guys guys looking fine as wine. Kherdia looking good, he’s my best dress with SC in second. Hehehehe Barca, people in glass houses should not throw stones.
Thanks for all the amazing work you doing here, I love your blogs!
Well, I have a question, maybe it is a stupid one, but I’m a fan of Real Madrid since 2008 and Robinho went away at this time. I’m not sure why he is an idiot, but I’m curious.:)
The quick version: he was upset he wasn’t making as much money as he thought he deserved (and he was upset that there were more famous players on the team than him), so he forced Madrid to sell him (he had also gone on strike to force previous club Santos to sell him to Madrid). At one point, he refused to talk to the press and pulled himself out of games. He was also dropped by Schuster who felt that his head wasn’t in the game. And when he finally decided to talk to the press, he told them that Madrid should accept Chelsea’s offer because he believed his time as a Madrid player had come to an end. He also organized his own press conference to complain about Madrid and said that he wanted to go to Chelsea no matter what.
In the end, Chelsea wouldn’t pay what Madrid wanted, so Robinho went to Manchester City. And we all know how what happened there, when he once again forced a club to sell him.
I think the problem with Robinho was more because he didn’t had patience to wait his time to shine in the club. When he went to R.Madrid he was already a big star in his country and one of the stars of Santos. To be a star in Santos is a huge thing in Brazil because Santos is one of the most legendary football clubs in that countryl, it’s the club that Pelé debuted. So when Robinho played in Santos, his skills and his funny charismatic personality made fans love him and media labeled him as the new Pelé. So everyone had high expectations on him and because of that Robinho probably thought that he would be able to shine in R.Madrid right away. Maybe he thought that he would have the same love and status as he had in Santos right away, but he failed to realize that it takes time to get used to a new team and that it takes time to gain the trust of a coach and the love of the fans. So he probably was upset that he was not able to live-up to the expectations people had on him right away, so instead of waiting patiently his time to shine on R.Madrid he thought that by changing to a new club he would be able to show his skills.
I can’t blame R.Madrid fans (or Manchester City) for being mad at him and hating him. And I’m not saying Robinho behaved well in Europe. Like I said on another comment, he didn’t showed his best side in R.Madrid and in Manchester City. But I feel sad, because I know Robinho has a good side to him and he’s a good player, I think he could have been sucessful in R.Madrid if he was able to combine the good side of his personality, with his skills and with the patience and work-mentality of players like Marcelo and Pipita (Both players that waited patiently for their time to shine on R.Madrid. And that despite the initial criticisms they recieved, they worked hard over the years to gain the trust and love of fans, the coaches and the club).
Thank you for that!
Later when he wanted to leave Manchester City he said he would like to play for Barca, right?
I remember that vague and I laughed about this, because of all the crap he said.
Is he ever content where he plays?
Thank you. I always wondered why his name on this blog is “that idiot Robinho”. 😉
I remember once he said, he wanted to become the best player of the world and wasnt able in RM to do that. I think as much as that hit me it hit other madridistas as well. His other badmouthing of RM i forgot as life moved on.
He was hurt that Calderon reportedly wanted to use him in a CR transfer, but in the end rumors like that happen to almost every player at RM. When the transfer happened I was rather shocked coz I didnt think hed really make the move after Chelsea wasnt ready to pay the amount RM asked for. I really liked him as a footballer, but his attitide sucked.
He really had a horrible attitude, and one of the things that bothered me the most was that he really didn’t even play that well to justify having that attitude.
Nice pics of the newbies – they all look good although Di Maria need to lose those jeans. Didn’t appreciate how tall Khedira was until I saw him standing next to some of the other guys – he cleans up nicely :). These Barca reports are pretty eye brow raising – although it undoubtedly goes on in many clubs to some degree – read as well that the club had 7 private planes, only 2 of which were used by the team. and these are supposed to be times of austerity??
-Did you guys see Pipita and Khedira on worldwide trending topics yesterday?
The surprising part was that they appeared on TT long time after the latest R.Madrid match and Cristiano was not on TT so I think maybe the reason they were on TT was for other reasons not related to the latest match. But I still didn’t figure out what reason was. BUT it’s awesome anyway! =) And regarding Pipita, many people were writing messages on how they are looking foward for his twitter account. ehehehehe Pipita has a lot of fangirls in Argentina (and other countries too)! But seems like Pipita is playing hard-to-get and teasing his fans a little bit by making them wait some days before the D-day (his twitter debut day)! I’m looking foward for Pipita’s twitter (I can’t wait to see what type of messages he’ll write).
-Regarding Di maria… I wonder if you’ve seen the prank a portuguese TV channel played on him: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmjmKBKtt6A . It’s pretty funny! The boy that appears in the end of the video was his team-mate in Benfica, David Luiz. I hope David Luiz comes to Real Madrid someday (there were some reports saying R.Madrid was interested in signing him in the future). David Luiz is a great player and also a very funny and nice guy. I’d love to see David Luiz and Di Maria together again, I love their friendship and I loved seeying their interactions when they played together on Benfica.
– It’s sad how many R.Madrid’s fans dislike Robinho. But unfortunelly Robinho didn’t showed his best side for them. I fol low Robinho’s career since his days in Santos when he was very young before he went to Europe (Among the brazilian teams, Santos is one of my fav! The Robinho-Diego pairing was fabolous ) and he was always a funny, friendly, humble and charismatic guy. Santos fans love him and he’s one of the fan-favourites of the brazilian national team (next to Lucio, Julio Cesar and Kaka). Unfortunelly, it seems like he never got used to the life in Europe and he was never able to show his good-side for people that got to know him by following his career in R.Madrid and Manchester City. He could have been one of the best players in the world if he got used to life and work in europe. He’s not as grumpy and stuck up as he’s portrayed in spanish and british media, I think he’s just unhappy, I guess he’s one of those guys that only find happiness at home. But I hope someday Robinho is able to show his good side in Europe too so that people understand why he’s so loved by Santos fans. =) I wished he was able to do that while he was in R.Madrid, but now it’s impossible.=(
– Zidane is talking a lot these days! ehehehehe But that’s good! I love reading his interviews! I’m very happy that he and Mourinho are going to collaborate, I think this will be a good thing for R.Madrid and also for Benzema. I’m sure Zidane will do his best to help Benzema. When Benzema played in Lyon he was so good that he looked like a young Ronaldo (R9 – the legendary Ronaldo Nazario) because of his style of playing and skills. I hope Benzema get a chance to show his skills in R.Madrid too.
– Ah!!! Talking about Ronaldo (R9), Saturday he had a livechat(http://twitcam.livestream.com/2etli) on twitter (twitter.com/ClaroRonaldo) with his fans and someone asked him which club he prefers=Barcelona or Real Madrid. He said that although he enjoyed playing in both teams, his favourite was R.Madrid because he identify himself more with R.Madrid and that he enjoyed playing there more. I was surprised because I thought he’d say Barcelona because his goal-scoring record in Barcelona was pretty EPIC. But it’s nice that he enjoyed R.Madrid more. On his twitcam, Ronaldo even showed Roberto Carlos who gave a shoutout to everyone watching the livechat. =) Roberto Carlos is now Ronaldo’s team mate in Corinthians. (Oh! And talking about Roberto carlos, did you guys see Roberto Carlos’ telephone call for Sergio Ramos when Sergio was in P. Pelota months ago? It was hilarious. You can watch it here at 4’40” -> http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gZumxnbAEf0 )
– The Barcelona-Laporta issue = I’ve been reading comments of Barça fans on Marca and I can’t believe some of them are mad at Rossell for revealing Laporta’s wrong doing and some of Barça fans are defending Laporta because they say that at least they won lots of title in laporta’s era, while at Rossell’s era they’re behind R.Madrid. So does they mean that for them if their club win titles, it’s okay if their director steal their money? I’m pretty shocked. I think Barça fans should be be mad at Laporta and NOT at Rossell. They should be thankful that Rossell is trying to have a transparent and clear administration for the Barça fans.
……….I’m so sorry, that was a very long comment. =/
A long but very informative comment, I read the whole thing! 😀
Of course some fans are going to be in denial when it comes to vindicating Laporta. That excuse is just pathetic. Sadly, for some people it’s only the titles that matter, and we’re all aware of the “sudden” boost of Barca fans there has been since the titles started pouring in. Oddly enough, the first full 90 minutes of football I ever watched was a Barca match, and I happened to be there at the stadium. Somehow I never seemed to gravitate towards them the slightest bit.
I don’t know whether Laporta was too ballsy or just plain stupid. I mean, these things happen all the time not just in football, but for crying out loud, it’s Barcelona, you’re bound to get caught one way or another!
Speaking as a Barcelona fan, I think the reason many of us are mad at Rosell is because of the way he’s going about this. The way he’s airing dirty laundry in public so that madridistas can point and laugh (no offense intended to this blog and its readers, you’re responding to public news exactly as one would expect you to!), coupled with some of the moves he’s made e.g. to restrict membership to the existing base which voted him in, it all comes out overall *looking* like he’s doing this less for the good of FC Barcelona and more for the overall self-interest and protection of Sandro Rosell. That’s what I think many of us are reacting to.
Why can’t everyone keep it classy like Xabi Alonso? (I guess thats what makes him so special.)
I read comments from Barca fans who were complaining about Rosell because of this new decision that limits membership too though… apparently the new board approved this decision which basically means new members have to be related to other members and so Barca fans feel that it’s exclusivist/elitist and there’s a lot of complaining about it (who wouldn’t complain about that?). So perhaps this decision also has something to do with Barca fans being mad at Rosell; it’s probably not all about winning titles….
Same here, Una. I loved SC’s and Mesut’s outfits the most.
On this occasion I would also like to truly thank God on letting Sergio Canales bring his old hair back!
I’m pretty sure Zizou would do a great Madrid coach, no?
I NEVER thought I’d see this many pics of footballers without a single thumbs up…It’s like I’ve died and gone to a thumbs up-free Heaven!
The Barca facts had me cracking up so hard. Srsly made my day. :’D
Ahhh Im so happy SC’s adorable messy blond hair is back! Love all the pics. SC and Pedro Leon are the best dressed! 🙂 Pedro Leon reminds me of some kind of adorable mouse or something…or some other cute little animal.
Sami Khedira is looking good!.. he is definitely in my opinion the best dressed here! WOW!
thanx to whoever made Canales having his usual hair again… Phew!!!
@J: I will not complain about the length of your post, it was interesting to read!
Sergio Canales must’ve heard what some of the commentators were saying about his hair during the match on Saturday! Haha… I’m glad it’s back to normal. I’m happy to leave the apocalyptic haircuts to Cris and Sergio.
WOW to the Barcelona news… yikes, that’s a lot of money. We should be glad that Mourinho’s main expense seems to be chewing gum and mini notebooks, eh? 🙂
