in case you missed it – the nota alta edition
In case you missed it – Real Madrid vs. AC Milan [2010-10-19].
Iker gave the team a “nota alta” and I will too, after a great performance at the Bernabéu. The Cristiano-Mesut partnership is really functioning, and I hope it brings many more happy moments for us in the future!
One. And speaking of Iker, well, I didn’t think he could get even more matchy-matchy, but he proved me wrong by showing up in neon green gloves, which matched his shoes (both are made by Reebok, so I shouldn’t be surprised). This means that the following were all green: shirt, gloves, shorts, socks, shoes, the field. At the beginning of the game, his socks were pulled up high enough so that there was no skin showing between the bottom of the shorts and the top of the socks, so he was literally green from neck to toes. Will he be asking the utilleros to make the captain’s armband in green as well?
Iker also made a fantastic save against Pirlo, and later on against Robinho. He really does have the reflexes of a cat (or jaguar/leopard, which sound better).

Speaking of Iker, this encounter was his 105th in the Champions League, over 11 years. In playing in this game, he passed Oliver Kahn as the goalkeeper who has played the most games in the history of the competition. Iker debuted in the CL on Sept. 15, 1999 against Olympiakos.
Two. Some pregame moments. First, head here to see Angel di María doing Iker proud by using his reflexes to make a save.
Next, we have Pepe and – look all the way in the back – Álvaro sort of coordinating their warm-up hip circles. And how cute is Marcelo with the kids? He talked to them while the rest of the players ignored them and – look past Pepe – tapped one of them on the face.

Speaking of those kids, if I were one of them, I’d look a lot happier, for obvious reasons. But then again, I guess they’re too young to understand the significance of the occasion – and the fact that they get to hold the hands of Iker Casillas, Xabi Alonso, Cristiano Ronaldo, etc.

Three. The goals. What a spectacular minute for us! I was hoping to see a few more goals based on the way we were playing, but the important thing is those three points.

Loved the individual goal celebrations as well! Cristiano unfortunately did not rip off his shirt, but he did celebrate a la Pipita. Meanwhile, Özil smoothed down his hair and made the letter “C” with his hands. I’m not sure what it means, but I can tell you that it’s probably not a tribute for Marcelo’s wife.

Four. Fun Cristiano expressions. He has smile lines just like Iker.
Five. High-fives are definitely better than thumbs-ups.

Six. The Xabi Alonso pose section.™
You’ll have to take my word that it’s Xabi in the picture on the right, unless you’re really good and can recognize his ass – I’m sure there are some crazy fans out there that can, although it would seem that Xabi is just too classy to have crazy fans. He’d have refined fans.
Seven. More fun moments. Mesut knocked over the referee in his haste to secure the ball! Luckily, he wasn’t carded. And Xabi gets very animated in shouting at the ref.

Eight. The crowd at the Bernabéu was behind their team during this match, applauding constantly, but they also booed the opposition at times, most notably when Ronaldinho came out for Robinho. After all, these two are huge enemies of Real Madrid, as far as the fans are concerned. In fact, the whistling and insults (I won’t write what was said here) started as soon as Robinho got off the bench to warm up, and started up again each time he handled the ball once on the field.

I don’t agree with what was shouted at Robinho, but he did deserve some of the booing. I was at the Bernabéu the day of his home debut, against Celta, and I remember how he had won us all over with that huge smile, how much hope we all had invested in him, how he was going to bring Madrid back to brilliance. But he was never able to accomplish that, and add that to the way he departed and his parting shots, and you understand why he was booed last night.
Meanwhile, the AC Milan fans at the game booed José Mourinho, remembering his past as coach of Inter.
Nine. On the flip side, Clarence Seedorf got enormous cheers, starting when he touched the ball for the first time during the game. He received more cheers as Milan’s players waited for Madrid to return after the halftime, and an ovation as he left the field after the game, which he corresponded by applauding the fans back.
Watch an interview with Clarence here.

Ten. The shirts exchange section. As the first half ended and the players were walking off the field, Ángel di María exchanged shirts with Luca Antonini, and Xabi did the same with Andrea Pirlo (he’s pulling the shirt off in the picture). I wonder why they did it at the half?
Iker exchanged shirts with Gianluca Zambrotta after the game, but unfortunately was wearing a second layer underneath.
Cris also exchanged shirts with someone, and thus provided the best eye candy moment of the game. He was interviewed by TVE after the game, and since I guess he couldn’t do it topless, he put on a big purple jacket (Sergio had to do the same thing in the past). He was also quite concerned with his hair during the interview. I like how he made a point of making sure it was standing up properly. No flat hair for Cristiano Ronaldo.

Meanwhile, Kaká headed down to the Milan locker room to say “hi” to his old teammates and console them for the loss. Very nice!
Eleven. Several of the players spoke to the press in the mixed zone and I’m sure they had interesting things to say, but I was more concerned with their outfits. Pepe’s shirt in and of itself clashes, and then he had to add that scarf. Oh dear. And Iker wore a plaid shirt, which I’m assuming was paired with his big yellow and black sneakers.
Pipita and El Pirata looked quite good, since they kept it simple (hello Pepe) and weren’t wearing plaid (hello Iker). If what Gonzalo is wearing looks familiar, it’s because it is.
And Álvaro Arbeloa spoke to El Larguero after the game, and was asked what he likes to do at home after the games. Álvaro said he likes to watch TV, “but not football because I like to disconnect from it,” and added that he’s currently unable to do that, because his mother is visiting, and she and his wife have control over the remote.
Twelve. The Mou section. He was relatively calm for Mou during the game, and at the postgame presser, he didn’t say anything too interesting. I’m sure he’ll be back to his crazy self by this weekend.

Once again fantastic review. And I was proud of the guys yesterday. Most importantly the crowd was amazing. One of my fav moments was the handshake between Ronaldinho and cris, Ibra and Cris and the hug between Ronaldinho and Mou.
Aww damn! I saw the Ronaldinho-Cris handshake and Ronaldinho-Mou hug but not the Ibra-Cris one. I also wanna know who Cris exchanged his jersey with.
Oh yay. I found out who Cris exchanged his jersey with! It was Alessandro Nesta!
Thank you very much, Una!!!
I was waiting for this post all day, because I just love your “in case you missed”.
Yesterday when I was watching the game, I was counting the moments that I thought you’ll include to this, and YES, they are all here! Only just with your hilarious comments! Gracias for sharing your thoughts with us!!
Oh, so Iker did make a save from that Pirlo shot! That’s what I thought. My stupid commentator kept saying that Iker had been rescued by the bar.
It was a great performance from everyone, in our first game against strong-ish opponents. I’ve been smiling all day!
I think Pirlo had more than one shot!
I almost fainted when I saw shirtless Cris *drools* I’m not even a fan!! And my love for Ozil is growing bigger on every match. He’s just quality!!
Oh Pepe, why? Since you recently said you would defend the Real Madrid shirt to the death, I think you should be required to wear it at all times (when not wearing the Portugal shirt). At no time, ever, ever, ever should you be allowed to dress yourself.
I need to find a way to contact Sofia immediately!!!
Though perhaps it was in some way a tribute to Sergio???
“Though perhaps it was in some way a tribute to Sergio???” <—-haha this cracked me up! A sweet gesture but we can only take so much 😉
I might be wrong, but I think Ozil’s “C” gesture is the Muslim crescent, the same way some Christians cross themselves when they score.
Just a visting cule–don’t mind me. 😀
hmmmm….i guess thats possible but for some reason I dont think thats it….
Yeah, me neither. It’s not a very common thing to do, so by doing it he isn’t really reaching out to Muslims or anything like that.
To be honest the first thing I thought was “C for cat?..” yeah..
Lol at Blitzen being a cule, you just can’t resist the “in case you missed it” posts can you? 😉
Exactly, its not a recognized gesture so I dont think people would get it….at least I didnt 😉
But if Muslims everywhere start throwing up moon signs because of Ozil, that would be freaking hilarious and awesome!!!
“C for cat?..” <—- thats always a possiblity too 😀
Thank you for posting this up!
That reminds me…
Una, do you know if Pepe and and Sofia are actually married? I’ve never seen either wear a wedding ring. Before the WC they were featured in a special for Portuguese TV in which he repeatedly referred to her as his “mulher” (mujer) but the captions said “namorada” (girlfriend).
Maybe they’re a “pareja de hecho”? I know quite a lot of couples in Spain who call each other marido/mujer but actually aren’t “married” per se….
Missed the match, but watched many highlights. Glad to the team win comfortably. And ECSTATIC to see Mesut score. A good effort from all, though.
As always, thanks for the gorgeous pics & commentary.
OMG! Shirtless Ronaldo gif… *dies*
Great recap, thank you!
this blog is amazing! haha love it
I’m so happy I found it 😀 keep up the good work!
Oh man Pepe’s warm up cracked me up, I’d love to see him with hula hoop!
It was almost 12:30 AM when the game ended for me, but dang, Cris during the shirt exchange surely took all of the sleepy feeling away. 😀
Gorgeous, increíble, wunderbar, ya salam!
Personal highlight: Mesut defeating the ref. I was laughing so hard at that 🙂
This made my day! I missed the game and was waiting for this post. I checked for the update here in my office cubicle (I’m an intern), and I began laughing when I saw the gif of Mesut knocking over the referee. I looked like a fool laughing by myself but who cares! This was totally worth the wait! XD
Sometimes the referee just really gets in the way doesn’t he?
HALA MADRID!!
Cris shirtless. HD TV. Made my day :p
But all joking aside, the game was awesome. Ozil pushing the ref was the funniest moment of the game LOL
thanks for the great wrap up!
Xabi’s been talking to the kids too, btw. http://i52.tinypic.com/qn62wm.jpg (via http://albion-lass.livejournal.com)
Congrats to Iker for the record breaking 🙂
I was so happy watching the game. I absolutely loved seeing all the assisting up front… they’re really starting to gel!!!!
That save from Iker — with ANY OTHER KEEPER, that would have been a goal! It was a great free kick, and an out-of-this-world save.
Shirtless Cris is quite the specimen! I’ve never been a huge fan (that w0uld be my younger sister), but I was impressed. For the Ramos fangirls, I laughed when I saw the shirtless-under-jacket interview picture — here, have the animated gif version! With bonus hair tousle and liplick. 🙂
thank you! Sexio’s fanclub would approve, I think. At least I do! LOL
We approve! We approve! We totally approve! This man is incredibly sensual. Wow, when he licks his lips.. Thanks Michelle! And please bless us with some more Sexio gifs whenever possible, you know we’ve been suffering due to his absence 😦
Damn I dont know how that reporter finished her questions after that…Sexio’s lucky he didnt get jumped…which is what I would have done if I was the one holding that microphone 😉
I will third… fourth… whatever that approval. Yum.
(Love that he and Cris both seem to feel the need to fix their hair when doing these interviews!)
I like Seedorf! I’m glad that R.Madrid fans cheered when he showed up. =)
I’m sad for the booing for robinho, but I I knew such thing would happen because R.Madrid fans don’t like him a lot. So I was not surprised to see him recieving a not very warm welcome. But I confess I’m dissapointed with the R.Madrid fans for booing Ronaldinho because of his Barça connections. I think Ronaldinho desearve more respect because he’s a legend and he’s one of those special players that brought joy and magic to football with his ‘jogo-bonito’, creative and amazing skills and moves. And he’s one of the few players that have recieved a standing ovation from R.Madrid fans on Bernabeu when he played against R.Madrid. So R.Madrid fans should show him more respect because no matter where he played or plays, he’s not just an average player, he’s the one and only amazing Ronaldinho! =D
Anyway….
This was a great match. I’m very happy for R.Madrid. Cristiano and Marcelo were great. And the fact that Marcelo played well in a match with so many great players like the squad of Milan is awesome because I heard Mano Menezes (the coach from Brazilian National Team) was on the stadium watching the match to see the performances of the brazilian players of both teams. =P So this means there are high chances of seeying Marcelo in the Brazil vs Argentina match (Marcelo x Pipita-DiMaria !!!).
I’m very happy to see Marcelo recieving so much love and trust from Real Madrid’s fans! =) But he desearves it! He’s been playing pretty well! Someone at Marca even wrote an article praising him (they even mention Pipita and praises him too)=http://www.marca.com/blogs/el-apunte/2010/10/20/la-hora-de-marcelo.html
And Carvalho! WOW. What a great signing he was! Although he’s in his 30’s, he’s pretty solid and very trustworthy on the defence.
But the best signing of all is still Mourinho!!! This guy never fails to show the world why he’s The Special One and one of the best coaches of the world. He’s been doing an awesome job with Real Madrid.
And Pipita… hehehehe I think it’s pretty cute how he doesn’t mind using the same clothes again. (Talking about him, I’m getting pretty anxious waiting for Pipita’s 1rst official tweet message! =D Go tweet Pipita!!!!!)
Una,
thanks for all your updates! I always enjoy reading your opinions, translations, articles and etc related to Real Madrid. Reading you blog made me like real madrid more, because i got to learn more about the team and i learned to love the bond of this real madrid squad and each of the players of this squad. =)
Saludos!!!
Fantastic review, as always! A wonderful game, and I loved all the moments you pointed out. Iker’s save against Pirlo was magnificent…although ouch, crashing into the bar looked like it hurt. The gif of Ozil pushing the ref is hilarious! When I was watching the game, I was worried he’d get carded for it or something…
As for the return of Mou’s crazy antics, you should check out this video from the Malaga game: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5aE4StlJw7w
And for the hundredth time, thank you sooo much for running this site. My Spanish is rusty from years of not using it, so it’s great to get updates and commentary in English. 😀
Thanks for the vid, Mou is just as entertaining as the game being played 😉
By the way…did anyone else watch this game on Fox Deportes? The comm kept calling Ronaldinho “Jar Jar Binks” and called Khedira “Jafar” from Aladdin. Grah, cannot unsee. xD
Oh my God LOL!!! How did he get away with that?! 😆 Way to cover for not knowing their actual names, I guess..
haha yeah Özil pushing down the ref… hilarious that was!
Great article Una as always!!!
Anyone saw that scene in the 50th min when a fk was given to RM, Xabi went to CR and took the ball from him and then showing him to listen to the ref. Hes the clear boss on the field!!! Haha how fast things change, last season they had a mayor discussion when Xabi wanted to kick a pk.
I dont understand the system on how these deflected goals are credited or taken away. Cristianios goal that was deflected by Pepe was similar. I thought its the ball changing the direction decessively but so was with Özils goal. Dont understand me wrong I totally allow him the goal. And he was totally happy afterwards. I just cant understand how they decide on what is a goal & what an own goal. But well.
Btw, Mourinho had a big praise for the Germans yesterday. He said Khedira is growing & growing. Hes doing great keeping the midfield together. And Özil is magic he said. Özil himself was happy especially with the Bernabeu fans. He was totally over the moon.
Sami said they are getting better in Spanish, studying intensively. He still has troubles speaking it, but understands a lot and on the pitch he does speak it already.
forgot to write… Angel has been an guardian angel for Carvalho there 😉 hehe. He knew what to do as we need to take good care of our defenders! Haha great! Hilarious still.
And how could I forget about!!! Congrats to Iker for his record! And also to Raul for his record yesterday.
wonderful summary of the match!!!!
I loved the game! Marcelo plays so well, he’s all over the place! I also adored how Ozil played (amazing!) and really the team seems to be more and more tuned in, if you know what I mean, it certainly is visible that they understand eachother on the field better than in the beginning.
the only think I did not like was the fact that the players of the opposite teams really do think that Xabi is an Ironman, why does he always have to be pushed or kicked so much! I do worry about the classy body!
I also liked Seedorf (he used to be my fav player of the Dutch team some years ago) so it was nice that he was not booed.
I also watched the FOX coverage, “Jar Jar Bings” was hilarious! I hardly understand spanish so it took me a while to get what the comm is referring to (taking into account my blurry stream too), but once I got it – impossible to unsee, like L said!
I forgot the most important surprise of the match for me: I went all “aaawwww” when I saw Cristiano shirtless. I mean, I suprised myself, he’s totally not my type. But oh my, now I cannot unsee how hot he looks shirtless.
Cris is quite a sneaky guy. He gives his crowd exactly what they want. He knows precisely well who’s waiting for him to do that at the end of each match: Kaka.
I am furious that ITV did not show Iker’s saves on their highlights. ITV think viewers in Britain are not interested in Iker Casillas.
I read on another website that Mesut’s “C” was for the crescent moon on the Turkish flag. I’ve never commented before, I this is alright. Thank you for the website- I really enjoy learning what the players do on their days off. What do Sami & Mesut do?
@LaBlanca
I believe the rules on own and deflected goal are like this.
1. If a goal-bound shot accidentally bounces off a team-mate into the opponent’s goal, the goal will be awarded to the player who struck the ball towards the target in the first place.
2. If a goal-bound shot is intentionally redirected into the opponent’s net, the goal will be credited to the player whose action produced the change of direction.
3. If a shot is going wide and is then deflected or redirected into the opponent’s goal by a team-mate, this player will of course be credited with the goal.
Thus, Ronaldo’s case falls in the first rule. He was the one who made the shot, i.e the player who struck the ball in the first place
In this game, Mesut is credited because he was shooting on target (rule no. 2) , i.e intentionally towards the goal before it deflected. If you watch the RM-Deportivo match, it was an own goal, not Pipita’s goal because it didn’t fall in any of the cases above.
Like to take a moment and say keep up the good work! It’s one of the highlights of my day to visit this blog and laugh a little to myself 🙂 Very entertaining !
Mesut’s ‘C’ is the Islam Crescent symbol
