in case you missed it – the 11-year streak edition

November 8, 2010

In case you missed it – Real Madrid. vs. Atlético [2010-11-07].

We might have been missing Raúl, but two of our signings this year – Ricardo Carvalho and Mesut Özil – more than made up for it, in this, their first derbi.  Plus, of course, José Mourinho.  So, the streak (for Madrid) or nightmare (for Atleti) continues for another year.  As El Mundo put it (warning: not PC at all), “we’ll end with the same joke from the past 11 years – the derby is almost always like a movie about (American) Indians: after a lot of shots, the blancos (white men, or Madrid, in this case) always end up winning.”

One. The sign displayed by the Ultras Sur before the game read, “This is Madrid” and had illustrations of some of the most emblematic buildings of the city (including the Torre Picasso, El Pirulí, Torres de Colón, Torres KIO, a couple from the Cuatro Torres Business Area), including of course, the Santiago Bernabéu front and center.  I guess the point was to show Atleti who’s the boss of the city?  And that Madrid is Real Madrid, not Atlético de Madrid.

Two. The goals.  Both were beautiful.  Ricardo Carvalho was looking more like a forward than a defender on his run towards the goal, and I think Lass summed up Mesut’s goal the best.  When Özil scored, Lass gave a shout and turned to Dudek in the players’ box where they were sitting, saying, “this is pure technique, you don’t know how difficult it is to do this!”  Canales and Garay were also in the box.

Three. The celebrations.  Both group goal celebrations once again involved a lot of hugging, jumping on top and head rubbing.  Look at Cris try to avoid having people touched his perfectly styled hair!  He’s obviously thinking that there’s still a lot of time until the half, and so his super gel has to hold out until then.

Both individual celebrations focused on the chest.  Ricardo thumped his (or maybe he was patting the escudo) while Mesut definitely kissed the escudo of Madrid on his jersey, endearing himself even more to millions of madridistas.  He also arranged his hair.  That’s all he did; he went straight from the kiss to his hair.  Nothing else.  Nada.

This was also a cute moment – what are Pepe and Marcelo whispering, and more importantly, what language are they using?

The cameras showed FP’s reaction after Özil’s goal (Mesut is basically FP’s pet, since he signed him, and he recently said he could be the best player in the world).  First, he patted the neck of Miguel Sebastián, Spain’s minister of industry and Atleti fan, then rubbed it in further by aiming a sly smile at Enrique Cerezo, Atleti’s president.  Well, when you’re a billionaire twice over (his net worth is almost US$2 billion), you can get away with things like this.  FP also held out his hand to get high fives from wife Pitina and Nuria González, socialite and wife of Madrid VP Fefé.

Also at the game: José Mercé and Toni Grande.  And ZZ sat with Valdano, El Buitre and Miguel Pardeza.

Four. One of the last goal occasions, where Cris passed the ball off his back, ending in the how-could-Sergio-miss-that??? moment.  Well, at least we got to see him do a backwards roll.

Five. Sami Khedira and Sergio Ramos’ Baywatch audition tapes.

They’re really starting to look alike.

Six. Atleti was the team that tested Iker the most this season, but he ended up not conceding a goal, thanks to his own prowess and the excellent defense in front of him.  He made a great save in the 35th minute against Reyes – Iker can fly.

Another improvement: he didn’t go matchy-matchy with the lime green sneakers!  And the moment when Carvalho went down reminds me of the moment in the World Cup when Sergio got kicked in the head against Paraguay, because Iker had the exact same reaction (i.e. waving his arms around and shouting).

Right after the final whistle, Iker made a beeline for David de Gea, to congratulate him for the game he had (and for his birthday, presumably – felicidades David!) and to give him a hug.  How sweet of Iker!

David didn’t have the greatest night, but Atleti would have lost by a much bigger margin if it weren’t for him.  It’s almost embarrassing how rich Spain is at the goalkeeper position, no?

I’m hoping captain Iker will be around and playing for La Roja for many, many more years, but the future is in very capable gloves.

Seven. A new bromance.  Marcelo loves his Portuguese, because he’s also shown that he’s thisclose to Pepe and Cristiano as well.

Bonus bromance: Ángel di María and Raúl Albiol, entering the stadium earlier in the evening.

Eight. Cris seems frustrated at how tightly he was being defended by Atleti’s players (look at him feinting there!), but he ran onto the field for the second half with a big smile on his face.

Cristiano showed off his new CR Mercurial Vapor SuperFly II boots, aka the leopard ones.  I must say that they don’t look bad, since you can hardly see the pattern, and since Cris is always in motion, they’re just a blur at times.

The front and back of Cris.  Both are attention-getters.

Nine. More front and back, this time of Sergio Ramos.  Equally as fascinating.

And Pipita.  Not bad either.

Maybe this can become a new feature?

Ten. Continuing with footballer body parts, Marcelo and Mesut both revealed their tummies.  Click on the picture of Marcelo to see the tattoo he has on his stomach (I’d like to study it in more detail, along with Sergio’s).

And continuing with Marcelo and Mesut, how cute are they here?  Look at Marcelo pleading with those puppy dog eyes.  How can anyone refuse him?  And Mesut leans over to talk to Mou – in English?

Eleven. More Sergio.  He’s really a fan of using his hands/arms to express himself.  Other ways he showed frustration: glaring, shaking the head, sighing, and, I’m betting, a little pouting.

Sergio spoke to El Larguero after the game.  He didn’t say anything too interesting; the only thing of note is that he texted Manuel Pellegrini to congratulate him on his new job (as coach of Málaga) because he’s still in touch with him and says he is a great coach and a great person.  He also added that Mou is the same.

Twelve. The Xabi Alonso pose section.™

Thirteen. The crowd was very vocal last night, and they could be heard chanting José Mourinho’s name at some points during the game.

In his postgame presser, Mou said that Carvalho and Khedira were the best players in this game, and that Benzema would start Wednesday’s Copa del Rey game against Murcia.  Mou also managed to compliment Iker (he made some important saves), Cris (he’s a team player, he’s a great player and I’m happy with him), Higuaín/Benzema (I like both of them) and also Lass (he’s a great player).  Mou added that he was satisfied with the outcome.

I love the faces TSO made during the game!

Fourteen. The locker room before the game.  Is that whole pile of jerseys on top of Kaká’s locker there because he hasn’t played a single game this year?  On the same vein then, should Lass be worried that he has no jerseys in the locker room?  And Cris’ new shoes were stored under his seat.  I bet he couldn’t wait to wear them, and he was like a kid on Christmas Eve, eagerly anticipating the big event!

I’m glad that realmadrid.com included these pictures, but couldn’t they also take (and post) some of the locker room immediately after the game?

Fifteen. Other notes:

Ricardo Carvalho ended up with a cut and a bruise to his lower left eyelid after an elbow from Diego Costa.  As you all know, he had to be taken out after he started bleeding, but I’m glad he’s ok.

Castilla lost 0-1 to Leganés yesterday.

Meanwhile, Madrid began preparing for Wednesday’s Copa del Rey game today with a closed training session at 11h.

Plus, they also get their Audis today, after it was postponed from last week.  The cars arrived at the stadium last night, after the game.

And Mesut Özil celebrated the win and his goal by heading to the Retiro for the closing party of the MTV Music awards.  He cleans up nicely, no?  I like the outfit!

Sixteen. And, a super cute bonus video to finish this post with.  Go here to see what this game means to Álvaro Arbeloa and Filipe Luis, who are good friends from their playing days together with Real Madrid B and Depor.  Here’s a brief transcript.

FL: we’re good friends who are always in touch, he’s (Álvaro) a great person who has helped me a lot ever since I arrived in Spain.

AA: Filipe is a really fun guy, he’s very peculiar and we’ve spent a lot of time together… friendship will be impossible on the field.

Result of the game? FL – 0-1.  AA – 2-0 (very good, Álvaro!).

Who’s going to win the Liga?  FL – Atleti.  AA – Real Madrid.

What is your friend like? FL – intelligent, honest, and a hard worker.  AA – a loyal friend, very fun, and very peculiar as well.

AA: I wish you all the luck you deserve, starting on Monday.

FL: Of course we’ll exchange shirts after the game, like we’ve always done.

Of note: Arbeloa’s change in hairstyle (it was extra spiky when he did the interview, no?), and Filipe Luis’ shirt.  Too bad Álvaro didn’t wear his James Dean shirt, so that they could match, but he did wear his second favorite brand, DSquared.

As for me, now I can get back to all the work I’ve neglected in order to rush out this post!

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!

I’m so grateful for your ‘in case you missed it’ posts because I’m missing a lot of RM’s games due to heavy course load. They’re also very amusing – I always start checking the day after the games for these posts.

I have a question to ask as well – is Ultras Sur the only organised fan group for RM?

I’ve noticed the large hanging banners before, but never connected it to fan groups, and they hand paint them? That’s a lot of work and dedication!

This team is giving me a giddy feeling, like there’s real hope of winning something this season XD

    • November 8, 2010 14:23

No, Madrid has a lot of organized fan groups, called “peñas.” They can register with the club to become official fan groups, but some requirements have to be met first (such as at least 50 members from the same city/town/area, a place to meet…). There are peñas all over the world.

Note: the ultras sur are not a peña – they’re hardcore, right-wing fans, the equivalent of hooligans, but not as violent. They have their own area of the stadium (the fondo sur, or the south end, hence the name). While they do heavily support Madrid, they’ve also been known to racially abuse opposing players and other things like that. If you ever watch them during a game, you’ll notice there is one person who always has his back to the game, because he’s leading the chanting.

hehe…thank you once again, you’re like a walking encyclopaedia of RM knowledge. Are you a part of any particular “peña” then?

I had been wondering about the Ultras Sur, because I’m reading a really interesting book about Spain right now that mentioned them while talking about right-wing groups. Do they ever get into legal trouble for being racist, etc.? (I’m American, so I don’t really know how these things work abroad…)

        Thanks for the information ^^

So if the guy’s leading chants for most of the match, when does he get to actually watch the match…..

Is that guy normally carrying a drum as well, or is that guy part of an actual peña?

Sorry to bombard you with questions.

        • November 9, 2010 08:11

I’m sure he sneaks looks back at the field once in a while. Yes, that’s the guy with the drum.

I only managed to catch the last twenty-five minutes of the match just a while ago. Why do I always make it in time to see the players get injured?! I hope Carvalho’s alright, ’cause apparently he has a concussion, no?

😮 They should definitely make a Real Madrid version of Baywatch! Seriously. Or a reality TV show where we all *pretend* to drown ourselves just to be rescued by the likes of half-nekid Sexio and Pipita!

Lol at the intimate goalie moment! Is it just me or is there really a ridiculous abundance of gorgeous (not to mention talented) goalkeepers in Spain?! Having Pepe Reina back in La Liga would just be too darn perfect to be true!

Ah, if I could only find enough words to articulate the pure happiness and exhilaration I felt after reading the frontal/derriere section.. *sigh*

    Ozil’s v-neck: no.

“As for me, now I can get back to all the work I’ve neglected in order to rush out this post!” — in your defense, I think you’ve outdone yourself on this one 😀 This ICYMI has by far the best overall collection of photos and gifs. I mean seriously, just take some time to scroll back up and skim through all that deliciousness once more!

    Hey Una…

I’m not a huge commenter but I really wanted to take this moment to say HOW MUCH I love both this and your La Roja blog…I’ve loved these boys for ages and this is just such an awesome site to just get all the details I miss not speaking Spanish and living outside of Spain. The added bonus is of course that we seem to favor the same players so I get lots of mentions of the one, the only, San Iker : ) which always makes my day…

I’m sure you’re a busy person so I’d just like to really thank you once again for taking the time to do this on such a regular basis. I love your style, your focus (Xabi Alonso pose section FTW!) and just your insight into Real Madrid!

So, since I’m sure there’s times where you wonder why you do this I just want to reiterate how much I personally enjoy your blog and how incredibly glad I am that you do this as well as my fervent wish that you’ll continue to blog for quite some time! I know I’ll never loose interest!

Thank you so much for this post. I start looking forward to your ‘in case you missed it…’ posts as soon as the match finishes. Also, you put in a LOT of work into these posts, and it shows. I just want to say that I love this blog.

Ps: IF it isn’t too much of extra work, can we make the front and back shots of the players as well as the Baywatch edition part of a regular post? Just like The Xabi Alonso pose section. ™? *grins* Now that would make many a RMfangirl really happy!

  7. November 8, 2010 15:10

Thank you, another brilliant edition of ICYMI!!!!

    My comments:

    – The Xabi Alonso Pose Section: words cannot express, lovely!

    – Nine: “Maybe this can become a new feature?” – I would not say no to that! The Body Parts Section (it could include various players, depending who was loved by the cameramen the most that match;-) or The Ramos Section – for whatever Sergio does LOL, just my suggestions;-)

    – The Baywatch Section- I like! It can appear when it is possible, not always are cameramen so generous, but this time I have to admit, they did well. I stopped breathing for a while when Sergio’s Baywatch was shown on the screen and I stopped breathing for a while when I saw the gif here.

    – I am surprised, but I am starting to love Cristiano’s boots, to the extent that I really want Nike to make a non-football edition so I could buy some and wear them myself.

    – Last but not least: if there’s more than 50 people here willing to do so, we can finally formally start the Sexio Fanclub as one of the peñas.The place to meet would be this blog, LOL;-))

    – Oh and MARCELO – he is on fire, isn’t he? I am really really waiting for him to score a goal soon, with the way he plays involving himself in attacks, I hope it’s just a matter of time! Can you imagine his joy when that happens??

    • HermosaChica permalink

Aaah, we totally should! Once I started reading football-related blogs, I thought the comments section would be bombarded by CRon admirers all over the place. But I’m pleased to say that there are far far more Sexio-lovers commenting than I thought! After that Baywatch gif, 50 members should be a breeze 😉

Now I really wish some amazing cameraman out there would catch Sergio giving his lips a little lick next match *fingers crossed* 😀

Another Ahh moment: Sergio running, this man melts away all my stress, I could watch him run ALL day long…& probably would if I didnt have school in 2 hrs 😉 Um…I’ll catch you after classes Serg!

Cris & Sergio returning to the field for the 2nd half, I know why they were all smiles…looks like Cris is saying “I’ll smack that later” ;D

LOL @ Cris trying to preserve his perfectly gelled hair.

I’m glad Ricardo’s eye is okay, and it was just a cut.

Mesut’s tummy has shrunk since we saw his tummy first in the beginning of the season no? Too bad mine hasn’t…

I like Mesut’s outfit too, I don’t normally like v-necks, but it looks sexy on him.

Real Madrid should pay you. You are an amazing spokesperson and should be rewarded for your dedication. The players themselves should pay you… a visit, privately, to your home, or take you out for dinner at Asador and get your picture on the wall with them, flanked by Iker and Sergio, with everyone giving the thumbs up and rubbing YOUR head. Then Arbeloa can tweet it.

During the celebration for that goal, it was so cute how excited Cris looked when he went to embrace Mesut. And Carvalho’s goal was cool, too. Plus, he just played classy the whole match.

The gif after the break of cris & sergio smiling is great too. You can feel the guys enjoy playing footy together and you can see on the field.

haha that face of Mou is hilarious!

Thank you for your awesome work Una!!!

I appreciate it so so SO much.. it's evident that you put quite a lot of work into it, and I enjoy reading every word and extensively staring at every single picture

P.S. you have my vote for making the 'front & back' section a permanent feature.. in fact I'm praying you do LOL

    Hey unamadridista,

sorry for asking again but I’m starting to feel stupid lol. Were you just joking and Lass didn’t really say those things to Dudek? I’m just wondering, how do you know what the guys say to each other in the players’ box? 😉 If there’s an interview with Lass where he mentioned it, could you maybe link me to it? I’d love to read/see it. Thanks! ❤

Lass really did say that to Dudek; I didn’t make that up. It was in one of the match reports, but I can’t remember which one.

I always read match reports, too, but I just go to realmadrid.com because I don’t really know any other (good) sites with match reports. I absolutely LOVE post match comments by the players! So much fun to hear them talk about the things they liked and also their thoughts on what went wrong. Very very interesting.

So I guess I’ll have to check out your blogs from now on haha. Again, you’re doing a fantastic job on these!

Thank you SO much for all this information, and the gifs, and the transcript, and everything! This is truly the best site there is about Real Madrid! 🙂
