mission accomplished

December 30, 2010

One training session plus two games equals a busy day for our team!

The team held their first training session after the winter break yesterday morning, with six absences.  Cristiano, Pepe and Di María were given permission to have one more day of vacation, while Diarra was also excused due to family problems.  And Lass and Xabi Alonso would play later that night, so they were absent as well.  Kaká, Gago, Khedira and Canales all trained normally, leaving only Dudek and Higuaín in the sick bay.

The Vicente Calderón was the scene of the third Champions for Africa game last night (and Iker’s reappearance as field player – he did the same thing last year), which ended in a 3-2 victory for José Mourinho’s Team Africa United.  Sergio captained the losing Team Liga BBVA side, and scored a goal off a penalty a la Panenka.  Other Madrid players participating in the match included Lass, Canales and last minute surprise Iker!  Diarra was also supposed to play, but as stated above, has not yet returned to Madrid.

Some unusual things that happened during the game:  Callejón jumping on the back of his Espanyol teammate Kameni and Kameni running with him on his back; the crowd at the Vicente Calderón chanting Iker’s name; and the players sending text messages from their phones to help the cause while on the bench.

And of course, there was Sergio asking permission from Mourinho – the opposing coach – to take a penalty, due to what happened in the game against Athletic.  After making the penalty, Sergio went over to Mou to dedicate it to him.  I love that Mou told Sergio how to shoot the penalty!!!

Mou also signed autographs for the crowd during the course of the game, and was seen on the bench not writing in his notebook or throwing water bottles, but smiling.

As stated above, Iker tried out his luck as a field player several times during the game (above and below).  And each time, he got very winded because he had to actually run, something he’s not used to, and jokingly asked to be subbed out.

This was Mou’s reaction after one of Iker’s runs up the flank.

At one point during the game, Iker ran all the way up the field, and then stayed there, to hug the opposite goalkeeper, Andrés Palop.  And so when the ball went the other way, the goal was empty.  Luckily, an offside was called.

And of course, these two madridistas also played.

It was so great to see Iker and Sergio smiling a lot, and having a great time.  They really helped to set the “good times” tone of the game.  And to salute them, here they are, front and back.™

If you have trouble spotting Sergio, just look for his fashion victim / Cristiano Ronaldo has a matching one Gucci belt.

The proceeds from the game, more than €800,000, will help 70,000 Malian children attend school through UNICEF’s Schools for Africa program and the Nelson Mandela Foundation, as well as go towards the construction of a center for professional development built in Mali by the Kanouté Foundation.

Sergio tweeted that they had achieved their goals, in more way than one, and thanked everyone for their presence and support.  That’s wonderful.

Meanwhile, in the other game of the day that we’re interested in, Xabi Alonso (and my secret crush Javi Martínez) helped lead the Euskadi team to a 3-1 victory against Venezuela last night in San Mamés.

I think you know what this is.

I really enjoyed the match- just a lot of smiles, jokes and laughs. Africa United really went for it in the second half too!

Sergio was such a doll, so smiley, and I have to say- loved his outfit! That’s a cool jacket, and not even the belt with change my opinion 😉

Iker as an outfield player gave me some of the biggest lols of the whole thing- it’s great seeing him in happy mode.

Thanks for your summary too, Una x

thanx a load Una! I really loved that Sergio asked Mou for permission. Haha! Awesome!
And Iker was fun to watch too.

Haha Mou putting a ref assistent aside! 😀 Had to laugh so much and Kameni taking Callejon on his back! 😀

What I cant understand is that Xabi was whistled. I know its the San Mames. But the guy identifies as Basque and travels there to play while RM gives him free one more day to be able to play there. Ikers name was chanted in a friendly at the Calderon. Really some people have to use their brain.

He plays for Real Madrid (and Spain). That’s enough for those fans to whistle at him.

I was really hoping we would get a sort-of-ICYMI and just want to tell you a big, big “Gracias”!!
Champions for Africa was more than amazing, it was so much fun to watch, lovely, entertaining – just all the good things I could think of.
Jajaja at Iker desperately trying to score! Too bad he couldn’t, but – hey – at least Serhio got Mou’s seal of approval for taking penalties, right? 😀

By the way, the official CFA Twitter says that, by now, it’s even 83.500 kids in Mali, who are going to benefit from the proceeds! You can also still send text messages today in order to donate.

Sergio was adorable yesterday. Smiling Mou is always a delight. Iker was cracking me up. It was lovely to see him so happy and smiling. He’s usually so emo and intense on the field. I couldn’t really watch the whole game, but I enjoyed what I saw of it.

This game was a lot of fun to watch! (unlike the Liverpool game which was going on at the same time…*shudder*)

Sergio’s smile is like a ray of sunshine = fact

Also, I think Iker deserves a goal sometime soon, yes/yes? haha, his runs were hysterical XD

that was just awful, wasn’t it? idk but Torres needs to get more involved. Guess I’m spoiled by the strikers on Madrid who help out all over the pitch. :\

What a great way to raise money for a cause – it looks as if fun was had by all. Perhaps Iker will have to take up jogging, since he doesn’t get enough exercise at the net?

I was thinking that I bet he has an even greater appreciation for the guys who do play the field now. These guys make it look so easy and it’s really not.

Did you see the update on Kickette about Sergio having a girlfriend?

    Is it truuueeee?

    • December 31, 2010 08:53

That rumor has been going around for a while, and it’s just that, an unconfirmed rumor at the moment. If it’s true, I don’t blame Sergio for wanting to keep it a secret.

Thanks to the link from Gilly B, I watched this last night. OMG this was the best match ever! I don’t know that I have every laughed so much during a game. These guys were just silly and it was good to see everyone smiling and having a good time for a great cause.

Also, was it just me or was Sergio’s face a bit red (embarrassed?) when he went up to take the PK? That whole exchange with Mou was funny.

Oh and when Mou was holding up the sideline ref from running up the pitch, that was pretty funny too. I’m hoping that all the Mou haters were able to see a different side of Mou.

If only I had understood more of what was said during the interviews. 😦 Although, the one gentlemen that Lara interviewed (towards the end in the 2nd half) was pretty funny with his sound effects of texting. I’m guessing he’s a comedian?

If the rumors about Sergio & Lara are true…good for him. She’s a pretty girl.
