all set for Getafe!

January 3, 2011

The big news from yesterday, if you’re an optimist, is Kaká’s return.  And if you’re a pessimist, it’s the fact that Pipita will require surgery for his herniated disc and be out for six months, i.e. the rest of the season.  But I’m an optimist (I’ve learned to be, after years of supporting Madrid and La Roja) so we’re going to focus on Ricky.

You might have thought that Cris would be the happiest one to see Kaká back with the team, followed closely by Marcelo and Pepe, but a dark horse entered the race – Ezequiel Garay!  Who knew he had this level of affection for Ricky?

The team held a training session yesterday afternoon, and there were smiles all around.

(The couple that stretches together stays together?)

Immediately after the training session, the concentración started.  A total of 20 players boarded the bus yesterday afternoon for the Mirasierra Suites, as the call-up looked like this.

Goalkeepers: Iker, Adán, Pacheco.

Defenders: Albiol, Marcelo, Sergio Ramos, Arbeloa, Garay.

Midfielders: Xabi Alonso, Khedira, Gago, Lass, Granero, Özil, Di María, Kaká, Canales, Pedro León.

Forwards: Cristiano Ronaldo, Benzema.

Lass was looking much more animated than I’ve ever seen him, both in the training session and on the way to board the bus!  Maybe it was because he could actually hear when the photographer told him to smile since he was only wearing earphones, not his usual huge headphones.

Kaká returns to a call-up 232 days after his last one, on May 15 before the Málaga game.  However, the last time Kaká suited up was last season, on May 8 against Athletic.  The call-up also comes just about five months after his knee surgery on Aug. 5.  And Fernando Gago is also returning after a lengthy absence; this is his first call-up of the season as well.  Canales is also back.  Pepe and Carvalho are suspended for this game – it’s been a while since we’ve had all our defenders available, no? – and Mateos and Diarra were absent due to the coach’s decision (the latter is still dealing with family problems with the permission of the club).

In his press conference, José Mourinho confirmed the news that Gonzalo Higuaín will be out for the rest of the season, as he will require surgery to correct his back problems.  Mou said, and I love this, “the medical department and I were sure that he would have to be operated on since more than one month ago.  Then some enlightened person started talking about recovery without surgery.  When people hear something they want to hear, they accept it as if it were the truth.  A repeated lie becomes the truth.  Then one month later, the enlightened ones (who don’t belong to the club) changed their minds and Higuaín has to be operated on… It’s a shame because he’s a fantastic player and kid.  I feel very bad for him and for the team.”  He then said he wouldn’t talk about Pipita during his recovery period, continuing the policy extended to Kaká during his recovery period.

Mou preferred not to talk about if Madrid would sign anyone else (“enough talk about new signings”), since Karim Benzema is now the only available forward (everyone should start collecting good luck charms for him, to protect his health.  At least he came back unscathed from his Christmas vacation, no?).  He did say that no one is leaving the team this month, and that those who have played less, such as Garay and Gago, are quality players and their time will come.

He also revealed the starting line-up for tonight:  Iker, Arbeloa, Sergio Ramos, Albiol, Marcelo, Xabi, Di María, Lass, Ozi, Cristiano, Benzema.  And when he finally got a chance to talk about the upcoming game instead of players, he said of Míchel, “I know that all footballer lovers know him, for his career as a footballer with Real Madrid.  He was one of the most important players of his generation.”  When asked if he saw Míchel taking charge of Madrid, Mou said, “he has a ‘white’ heart and the club will always keep its doors open to those with ‘white’ hearts.”

Mou was also present for 15 minutes of the Castilla game earlier in the afternoon, but unfortunately our boys lost 0-1 to Getafe B (not a good sign, no?).  MFC played the entire game.

Meanwhile, Gonzalo Higuaín will arrive in Madrid this afternoon from Argentina.  It’s still unknown where he will have the surgery for his hernia.

However, according to AS, citing “sources from Madrid,” the decision has not yet been made, and within 15 days the player, coaching staff and medical team will meet to make a decision.  The club is convinced that the treatment Pipita has been receiving up to now (the conservative route – medical treatment) is positive because the down time is only two months.  Gonzalo has been working with doctors from the Argentine national team during his time in Buenos Aires, and sources (again, just “sources”) say that he’s much better now and his back is stronger.

P.S.  Now each time I read “Feliz año a todos” – which is a lot during this time of the year – I hear it in Ozi’s voice.  Fe-liz an-yo aaa to-dos.  And then a peek at Sami Khedira.

and i agree with your P.S… i love kaka with all my heart, but ozil is absolutely adorable, and his video with khedira just confirms it even more.

i wonder if mourinho will give the castilla team some advice after those 15 minutes?

    thank your for your translations/summary/post!

Perez, i think, takes the ‘look’ into account when signing players. otherwise, how can we understand why our team consists of very good looking men? none of them is ‘usual’. all can be stars in fashion and movies.
in a similar vein, Lass, if gets more minutes, will be the cutest. see his adorable smile….

Mou knew from a loooong time ago that Higuain had to have surgery, I bet. Ah, I am going to miss Pipita so much 😦
But I am glad to have Kaka back, words can’t even describe!!!

Thank you for all your posts Una, you are such a sweetheart for keeping us all updated 🙂

I must admit I cannot stand Kaka (and Mou doesn’t like him as well), but if he’s able to contribute to good result for the rest of the season and if he DOES NOT steal Ozil’s place then I’m ok with him 😉
BTW Una: Lass is leaving this winter. Most probably to ManU…

How do you know Mou doesn’t like Kaka? Just curious. 🙂

Mou has admitted that Kaka does not fit into his style of play. BTW he was trying to get rid of him already in summer, and now (thank God) ManU want Kaka on loan: Mou wasn’t very fond of selling him to Inter 😉

It’s amazing to see this team being so happy! Great to see Kaka playing again! I love them all!

I am so happy about Kaka’s return!!!!

Sad for Pipita though, I hope he will be fine soon. Better to get things fixed right now, he’s still pretty young, than to keep playing and destroy something more. I am sure he will have a lot of support and be fine soon!

And again, I cannot believe I am saying this, but TSO looks adorable and also my love for him grows every day. 😉

“The big news from yesterday, if you’re an optimist, is Kaká’s return”-yeah!! i’m so happy that he is back! let’s hope he gets some playing time
“And if you’re a pessimist, it’s the fact that Pipita will require surgery for his herniated disc and be out for six months, i.e. the rest of the season”- 😦 poor Pipita…but i will be an optimist and say again: Kaka is back!!
“Mou was also present for 15 minutes of the Castilla game earlier in the afternoon, but unfortunately our boys lost 0-1 to Getafe B (not a good sign, no?). ” – optimist remember?

I read some gossip that Klose could come on loan from Bayern Munich for the rest of the season. I know that is highly unlikely, but I would love it. He is a straight up, front and center, striker – would let Cris stay on the wing. And watching him and Ozil play together like in the world cup – dream come true!

actually RM want to buy Mirek Klose (yes, he comes from my country 😉 because his contract with Bayern will be over at the end of this season and if Munich want some money now is the time 😉
