Real Madrid at the FIFA gala
José Mourinho walked away with the coach of the year award at the FIFA gala in Zurich last night, but sadly not for his work at Real Madrid (there’s always next year, right?) And Iker and Cristiano both made the FIFA/FIFPro ideal starting XI of 2010, along with ex-madridista Wesley “Welly” Sneijder (or Whiskey, as Iker called him yesterday).
Our award winners
Cristiano and Iker were deserved members of the ideal starting XI.
Iker said of the recognition, “I’m happy to be among the best. This is the second consecutive year for me and it’s not easy. It’s the icing on top of the cake for this unforgettable year. You always hope that each year will be better than the last but I don’t know if anything could top last year.”
And Iker was very diplomatic last night, saying, “Leo, along with Cristiano, is the best in the world.”
The ‘special’ coach of the year
Mou hugged and kissed Cris and Iker and his former players from Inter (Sneijder, Maicon, Lucio) before going up to receive his award, and during his acceptance speech, congratulated the two other finalists – Pep Guardiola and Vicente del Bosque – and said, “I’ve worked very hard to get here, but I didn’t do it alone. I want to thank my players and the people that love me.” He went on to thank “my wife, my children, all those that I love and everyone who helped me to win. Some players from Inter are here, I love these players and I hope to love those from Real Madrid in this way shortly.” [Oh, I’m sure the love is mutual already!]
Here’s Iker and Cris during Mou’s speech. Lucio looks very touched, doesn’t he?
Sneijder had good words for his former coach, as well as the quote of the night, when he asked after being honored as a member of the ideal starting XI to name one unforgettable memory of this year. His answer? “Definitely the wedding with my beautiful wife. Oh you mean in football? To win the Champions League… it was a pleasure to work with José Mourinho. And I want to tell him this on stage, it was a pleasure to work with him and for me he is the best coach in the world.” This made Mou almost break down in tears – his eyes were definitely wet!
Interestingly enough, neither Cristiano nor Iker, who had voting rights as the captains of their respective national teams, voted for Mou. In fact, Iker’s first place vote was invalid, probably because he voted for VDB, and you’re not allowed to vote for someone from your own country.
In terms of player votes, Cris put down Xavi for first, Iker for second and Wesley for third. Iker opted for three former/current teammates: Robben (to make up for shutting him down twice in the World Cup final?), Wesley and Cristiano. By the way, Xabi Alonso finished tenth in Ballon d’Or voting.
The delegation from Madrid was made up of Mou, Iker, Cris, JV and Emilio Butragueño. They arrived late and Mou missed the press conference with his two coach of the year fellow finalists and the three finalists for the Ballon d’Or award.
The fashion
I thought Cristiano looked great; I love his three-piece suit! Shame about the pose though. And Mou also looks wonderful, but why didn’t he opt for a pair of black shoes? It really bothers me.
The tweets
The bromance basically said the same thing, while Sergio opted for “I want to say it’s an honor to be able to work every day with a coach like Mourinho, who was chosen as the best coach of 2010 by FIFA. Congratulations míster!”
The cute moment
Awww, Iker and Welly exchanged numbers! Or else they were comparing whose significant other is hotter.
The portraits
I don’t know the purpose behind these, or why the camera gets progressively closer to Cristiano’s face, but these are nice, aren’t they?
More on Iker here.
Why brown shoos? Must have had no time to pick the black, but it bothered me as well…
I love his growing emotions with Sneijder’s speech. Its just another proof of his exceptional sincerity. WE LOVE MOU
Mou’s face, PRECIOUS!
BiG Love to my love CR ❤
You now when Kaká scored in the game against VillaReal, and he made a "heart" with his hand. Its actually not a heart his making, its "CC", the two initials for Carol, his wife..
Caroline wrote on her twitter;
"The infinite, besides being formed by my two initials (CC), is also the infinite love of God for us is our love that goes beyond our …"
" heart of our feeling, but also our whole being … and all our thought and action…"
Carol truly confirmed that. So now you know… :]
Hugs from Sweden!
Just the most beautiful moment with Wesley and Mou! I nearly teared as well. I am happy for Messi but honestly, like Mou said, Xavi or Sneijder should have won. Everywhere Mourinho goes, all the players fall in love with him. So so glad he’s at Real Madrid.
I also don’t like Mou’s tie. It looks a little undone.
And that picture of Iker and Wesley is adorable! And Yolanthe is definitely hotter than Sara! Hehe. (and, no, I’m not just being bitter)

A professor of mine told us in a lecture it’s customery in Italy to wear brown shoes with a black suit. Don’t know why or if it’s true, but I’ve seen it several times.
“Interestingly enough, neither Cristiano nor Iker, who had voting rights as the captains of their respective national teams, voted for Mou. In fact, Iker’s first place vote was invalid, probably because he voted for VDB, and you’re not allowed to vote for someone from your own country.”
so that means cristiano wouldn’t be able to vote for mourinho, no? 🙂
No, because Mou is not a national team coach. Sorry if I didn’t make that clear.
So you’re saying Cristiano would be able to vote for Mourinho even though they both come from Portugal while Iker is NOT able to vote for Pep or del Bosque? X_X
I am confused @_@
Yes. The rule is just there to prevent you from voting for your national team teammates/coach. Cris could vote for Mou, since Mou is not the coach of Portugal. Iker could vote for Pep along those lines, but not VDB.
Yay! Got so happy for Mou 🙂 And I must admit I also got very happy for Messi..’cause just can’t stand Xavi! But I strongly disagree with the spanish media, saying that FIFA ignored the spanish football. How??? How many players of La Roja are in the Best 11? Also, Messi played almost all his life in Spain…why care so much about where the player is born, since all his development as a player was in Spain?
Anyway, hope Mou get this prize again next year, achieving all he got with Inter in Real 😉 AND I REALLY REALLY HOPE he chose black shoes next year.
Una, I don’t think Cris was able to vote for Mourinho as they’re both Portuguese (and I believe the rule is that you can’t vote for men from your own country).
I’m sure Sir Alex is touched by Cris’ loyalty tho ❤
Lovely post, I do adore our players & coaches in suits *_* Yummy hahahaha
I really touched me to see Mou so moved. He’s the best.
congrats to Mou for the golden ball!!! Even though I think DelB deserved it as well. Also congrats to Iker & Cris for making the golden team.
Una, have you seen what Cris said about Iker? So far with the rumors that these two wouldnt get along….
Aww they’re all hot. I’m going to admit it but even Mou looks hot ; )
Cristiano oh my gosh i have no words to describe how hot he is, plus he’s a freaking awesome player (the best for me) He’s the full package. I am just so sure that this year balon de oro will be for Cristiano if he keeps playing like he has done. He’s making history. Hala Madrid!!
I’m a little confused if either we don’t know who Iker voted for first place since they made his first place vote invalid, or if Iker just wasn’t allowed to make a first place vote…
He was allowed, his vote was just invalid. I’m hoping it’s because he voted for VDB.
Ok. I hope so too! 🙂
Cris looks stunning in a suit 😉
Congratulations to all the winners!
when did he call wesley whiskey?!
When they first saw each other in Zurich.
“Interestingly enough, neither Cristiano nor Iker, who had voting rights as the captains of their respective national teams, voted for Mou.”
– but Cristiano cannot vote for Mou, right? They are both Portuguese, after all.
I’ve been reading this blog for a couple of weeks now and I absolutly adore it! And I want to use my first comment to say that Wesley Sneijder is the sweetest thing in the history of the world! What he said about his wedding… and then making Mou “cry”, it was all epic, I love him!!
