all set for Real Sociedad!

February 5, 2011

Madrid held its fourth training session of the week this morning, its last one before tomorrow’s game against Real Sociedad in the Bernabéu.  Twenty-two players from the first team plus Tomás Mejías worked out in the session.  Sergio Ramos was the only absence (not counting the obvious one of Pipita).  Maybe he was too tired from last night? (Apparently, Sara Carbonero hosted a celebration for her birthday last night, and some of the Madrid players attended.)  In any case, he’s out for tomorrow’s game, as he’s serving a one-game suspension for accumulating too many yellow cards.

The highlight of the session was the players congratulating Cristiano Ronaldo on his 26th birthday.  However, if you look at the pictures the web site posted of this little event, you won’t notice anything different from the norm, because it just looks like the usual Pepe/Marcelo (and Kaká, now that he’s back) joking around with Cristiano, no?

Wait, what’s the difference again?

Twenty footballers were called up for the game.  Sergio Canales and Fernando Gago made their return, while it looks like Peter Lion is still in the doghouse, because he’ll be watching from the stands.  Pepe and Dudek were deemed not game fit yet, so they didn’t make the cut either, while of course Sergio Ramos was not available to be picked.

Goalkeepers: Casillas, Adán, Mejías.

Defenders: Carvalho, Marcelo, Arbeloa, Albiol, Garay.

Midfielders: Khedira, Alonso, Lass, Granero, Canales, Gago, Kaka, Özil, Di María.

Forwards: Cristiano Ronaldo, Adebayor, Benzema.

In his press conference (doesn’t it seem like forever since we’ve heard from a player?), José Mourinho said the following:  “I’m not surprised that Di María is fatigued because he came from a league with 16 teams and he didn’t play in Europe… and he plays at 200 kilometers per hour and he can’t go any slower because then he’ll lose his advantages as a great player.”

As for Cristiano, Mou described his numbers as “really dramatic”:  “he’s played an incredible number of minutes, he’s played while sick… even if Cristiano doesn’t score another goal this season, it will have been a fantastic season for him.  His father will always defend him.”

How sweet!  In case you don’t know, the last part was in reference to Mou’s statements earlier this week rebutting what Walter Pandiani had said about Cristiano, and how Pandiani was getting free publicity from talking crap about Cristiano, to which Pandiani replied, “oh look, Cristiano’s father came out to defend him!”

Cristiano’s papá loves him.

Mou was also questioned as to why Pedro León was not called up, and his response didn’t reveal anything and kind of went off tangent a la Pepe Reina: “it’s the coach’s decision.  In this moment, I have Higuaín out, Pepe as well, and Ramos who is sanctioned.  If Pedro León made the list and Granero didn’t, you would ask me about Granero.  Why don’t you ask me why Canales made it?  It’s because this week he worked very hard and you have to give him encouragement.  There’s no negative reason why Pedro León was not called up.”

As for Álvaro Arbeloa, Mou said that the two of them have the same mindsets (or are alter egos, as Madrid’s web site described it), because both take football seriously and both concentrate for the entire 90 minutes.  In addition, “he knows what qualities he has and what defects he has.  From one to 10, he’s never a 10 but he’s not a six either.  He’s always a seven or an eight or a nine.  He’s a player that I like very much.”

Damn right Pandiani has created a publicity for himself… and more than a few voodoo dolls made with his name on it.

I love how quick and classy our boys react to this matter, so haters can stay pressed/jealous/pale.

And Peter Lion… needs to take anger management classes, I swear. Take Di Maria with you too.

Hola Una! I saw on the cover of Marca that they had an interview with Xabi today, but I can’t find anything on their site. Do you know if he said anything interesting? Don’t worry if you don’t have any time to look 🙂 I really love your blog, it’s my favourite place online.
