they do make Madrid look good, no?

March 1, 2011

Iker found time to change clothes between his previous commitment and this!  And are Sergio and Mesut wearing the same shoes?

Real Madrid; the Spanish Ministry of Industry, Tourism and Commerce; the Comunidad de Madrid; and the Madrid City Hall have teamed up to promote Spain and Madrid as tourist destinations, under the (very original) slogan of “Visit Spain, Visit Madrid.”  The presentation of the agreement between these entities to work together was held at the Bernabéu yesterday afternoon, in the presence of Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Mesut Özil, Kaká, Karim Benzema and Ángel di María.  These players will take shoot two videos to help promote the city and country (hopefully, they will speak English in them, no?  Fingers crossed for Iker and Sergio).

This three-year long agreement means that (Real) Madrid will use its resources to promote (the city of) Madrid and Spain as tourist destinations around the world.  One of the things that they will do is to have the slogan appear before games on the electronic ad screens of the stadium, and on the wall surrounding Valdebebas.  We also found out that another thing that Madrid will do to promote the city and country – go on a tour of Asia this summer, with China as a certain destination, since Spain wants to attract one million Chinese tourists by 2020.

During the various speeches at the event, Real Madrid – the club and the team – were called, among other things, “a universal team,” “the best team in the world,” “ambassadors of Spain,” “an icon for all of Spain.”  Madrid will earn €3.3 million from this collaboration.

In 2010, the Comunidad de Madrid received 7.8 million visitors, out of the 53 million tourists that came to Spain.  Out of those 53 million, two million were there to watch sporting events, while another six came to play sports.

Not very many people seemed to be interested/entertained, no?

Just off the top of my head, I can provide several ideas on how to best utilize these boys to get people (or at least females) to come to Madrid and Spain.

ONE. Have Iker, Esteban or Antonio (one of the madrileños) film a spot where they say “there’s plenty more guys like me in Madrid, come visit!”  Xabi can do the one for Spain.

TWO. Have Álvaro, Sergio or one of those with twitter accounts (which now includes El Pirata, as confirmed by Álvaro!!!) tell their followers to come visit Madrid/Spain.  There will definitely be some people who will take this literally.

THREE. Film one of the boys eating jamón while shopping in Zara.  That’s the best of Spain, wrapped up in one tidy package.

FOUR. Open up the training sessions to the public again.

I have plenty more (including some more serious ones), and I’m sure you do too, so share!

If Sergio Ramos is waiting for me in Madrid, I will gladly quit school right now and hop on a plane to Madrid. 🙂 Haha.

    Finger crossed…
I don’t care even if it cost all of my saving 😀

To get men to come, they should put Nagore in the posters.

They should also use your Stalker’s Guide, Una. I’m sure that will be a very welcome addition to any guide book. The boys won’t be to happy about it though, but it’s for the city of Madrid and for Spain, so they should take one for the team. 🙂

Oh deeaar , i love to see pretty Mesut in here! He always says on the interviews how he loves Madrid and all. So cute ~ cant wait to see the videos 😀
and about your options, i totally loved the 4th one! Open up the training sessions to the public again. SO perfect.

I think Mesut might actually be the most important madridista to promote Spain and Madrid, condering that he is hugely popular in Germany, and the Germans are said to be world champions in travelling. Obviously, no other nation spends as much money on holidaying as the Germans, and Spain is certainly one of their favourite destinations!

      • March 2, 2011 10:22

        Well, maybe that is true…
And some German thinks Mallorca is a official part of our country.;)

No need for doing the campaign for us, we know how beautiful Spain is!♥

glad to see cristiano and jose didnt promote this. they may work for real madrid but they are portuguese born and raised and promoting madrid as a travel destination would hurt lisboa, porto and algarve tourism. sorry spaniards but the special one and cr7 are ours 😉

Una, you are VERY sneaky! I love how you squeezed in the fact that Esteban has a twitter account! I literally gasped when I read that. 😀 (yeah, I haven’t been checking twitter very thoroughly lately..)
I’m sure he and Xabi will have a series of intellectually enriched debates via twitter, oh and they’d discuss books too! *swoon*

Encouraging people to visit Madrid/Spain? Sexio. Shirtless. As simple as that.

You got your wish, at least on the books… we’ll have to hold out on the intellectually enriching debates, but things are already looking promising from Esteban!

I love your ideas especially three and four! As for me, have the boys be tour guides. Bonus if they can be private tour guides, just me and them. Hahaha!! 🙂 Imagine shopping and eating with them!! aaahhhh.

This is a really good project. But personally, I want to go to Spain even if the boys don’t advertise it. 🙂

Una, do you happen to have a You Tube link for the video that’s @RealMadrid.com? (I mean, where they show the campaign presentation) Thanks! 🙂

Una, you are absolutely brilliant! They should really hire you to work for them. Your first suggestion would definitely get me to empty my bank account and book the first flight out to Madrid! 😀

  14. March 1, 2011 16:34

I don’t think they need to do much convincing.. just the fact these guys exist and is currently living in Madrid is reason enough for me to want to go. I just need money =(

I visited in 2008 hoping to see Sergio, but he didn’t play the one game I went to (against Gijon and VDV scored 3) I got to see Cannavaro before he left though.

Now I really want to see Özil >.<

Real Madrid was the reason I went to Madrid for the first time. So even without the agreement the promotion worked 😉 Then when I met Iker, Sergio and Xabi I started missing this city. I’m very happy I’m going back there next week. I will see if the slogan is already surrounding Valdebebas.
Xabi is so totally not Spanish (as far as the looks are concerned) that it would be deceiving if he filmed a spot for Spain 😉 he’s simply unique.
I see that El Pirata is rocking already on Twitter, 5000 followers 🙂
jamon has severe competition from the part of prosciutto but I can’t tell which one is better, I’m a vegetarian 😉
Open up the training sessions: a huge YES under that.

The city of Madrid should have some sort of packages : the Casillas package, the Ramos package, the Pirata’s package and so on. It would go from having your personal steward on board to being hosted into the players house in a sort of bed and breakfast formula… Ah and visiting the city and having Benzema as a guide would be SO cool (though Im not sure he knows the city very well).

PS: You should never ask a Real Madrid “fangirl” (dont know how to call myself in English without the pejorative touch :/ ) how to use the boys in order to promote Madrid, you have no idea what fantasies it leads to… Peligroso para la salud mental, no? 🙂

Concept Three is PERFECTION — far and away my favourite! It could even be regionalized beyond Madrid use some of the La Roja players, if they want people to visit the rest of Spain:

    – Geri, shopping in Mango, eating mel i mato. Visit Catalunya!
    – Xabi, eating seafood, breeze in his hair and sand between his toes. Visit Donostia!
    – Sergio Ramos, extra-long hair, blood oozing from his shoulderblade, playing a cajon while wearing green pants. Visit Andalucia!
    – Juanin Mata & David Villa, covered in coal dust, eating fabada… Visit Asturias! (Or not…)
    – Andresito, drinking a bottle of Bodegas Iniesta, eating migas… Visit Albacete! (or more likely, just caga y vete….)

    Right, I’ll stop now.

    • March 2, 2011 07:53

I also thought it would be nice for the players of La Roja to introduce their hometowns/home provinces! After all, 12 of the 17 provinces are covered, if we “lend” Mata to CyL – or use VDB – and Arbeloa to Aragón.

    • March 2, 2011 14:00

PS – Geri is already introducing his favorite places in Barcelona, in this month’s issue of Condé Nast Traveler (Spanish edition).

THAT. I cannot WAIT. To see. Do you already have the hard copy or is that just what the word on the street is in terms of Coming Soon? In either case, are you planning link it? (Even if you don’t translate it — I just want to see!) 😀

  23. March 2, 2011 05:06

I know I’m definitely going to Spain one of these days, 2013 might be too early though (not graduated yet!). And I gasped when I read the part where Esteban has twitter too! I think #4 is a must, and I can already see Alvaro doing #3! Maybe they can organize a city wide scavenger hunt in Madrid and the prize would be getting to hang out with one of the guys or something =P hahahha I’m clearly dreaming
