a movie premiere, a hug & ‘Moratower’

March 10, 2011

UPDATE: Iker didn’t wait for Mou and revealed himself that the hug (see point TWO below) was to celebrate Mou not requiring the players to be concentrados before next weekend’s derbi against Atleti (that’s why Iker said it would be revealed next week and not this week, since the game is next weekend).  I assume this is because the players will be in Madrid already anyway, and so it’s probably a one-time thing, knowing Mou?

All those things and more in this news round-up!

ONE. Gonzalo Higuaín, Álvaro Arbeloa, Pedro León, Antonio Adán and madridistas Fernando Hierro, Chendo, José Antonio Camacho and Miguel Torres were all spotted at the premiere of Torrente 4: Lethal Crisis last night at the Capitol theater in Madrid (the movie comes out tomorrow).  How come Sergio didn’t show up?  Even if he wasn’t there, his style was present, in the form of Pipita’s green pants!  He was clearly inspired by Sergio…

Carlota was looking lovely, as she usually does, and we got to see Peter Lion’s girlfriend – can I refer to her as the lioness?

Álvaro managed to tweet from the premiere, first saying that he was saying hi to Carlos Moya, and then later saying that he and Adán had managed to get a picture of themselves with Carmen de Mairena (google “her” if you want, but it’s pretty scary).  Why didn’t he tweet that picture?

Meanwhile, Carlota had this to say via her twitter.  Yesterday, she said she couldn’t wait to see Álvaro’s cinematographic debut, and today, she said he was very handsome in the movie, and that when he retires, he can become an actor!  Álvaro replied, saying of course, from here to Hollywood!  How cute that the two of them tweet each other!

And it appears that a black blazer and white shirt is the most popular combination for a Real Madrid footballer to wear right now!

TWO. With that in mind, maybe Iker was trying to be different last night, when he traveled to Ávila to be honored in their sports gala, with the black collar that reminds me of the Real Madrid shirt?  Maybe that’s why, since Iker’s goalie shirt lacks that collar…

There, he was asked about the mysterious hug he and José Mourinho had shared in that morning’s training session (left).  Iker didn’t want to reveal the motive behind the hug, saying, “the míster will talk about it next week in his next press conference because it’s not a secret.”

I wonder what that’s all about?  I would think it has to do with Iker’s personal life, but I doubt he would want anyone to talk about that, and it wouldn’t be fitting for Mou to talk about that either!

By the way, Iker and his friends will be the special guests on “El Larguero” tonight.

THREE. Speaking of Mou, remember how I wondered whether the players have a nickname for him?  Well, they do and it’s “El Guapo.”  Somehow, I’m not surprised.

FOUR. Someone else who has a nickname: MFC Álvaro Borja Morata Martín is called… Moratower!  That’s because he’s grown four centimeters since the summer and now checks in at 1.91 m!  However, MFC was a late bloomer – he was always one of the shortest on his team up to the cadete level, and it wasn’t until he was 15 that he started growing a lot.

FIVE. In declarations to Onda Madrid, Raúl Albiol said that Mesut Özil is a “bellísima persona.”  El Chori also said that it would be special for him to return to Valencia and the Mestalla to play the Copa del Rey final because “it’s close to my house.  As a kid, I was a ball boy there and I remember great Champions League games against Arsenal and Leeds United.  It’s a very special stadium for me.”  And he talked about Mou and that Champions League game against Milan, saying that the míster had really frightened him when he grabbed him.

SIX. A great number of Madrid’s players sent congratulatory messages last night to Raúl, after Schalke eliminated Valencia to advance to the quarterfinals of the Champions League.  Raúl said he hoped his team wouldn’t have to face another Spanish team in the next round.  And with this game, Rulo became the player who has played the most European Cup games, with 140.  In the first leg of this match-up, he became the highest goalscorer in all UEFA competitions.

SEVEN. And Esteban Granero’s musical recommendations for yesterday were Lucinda Williams and Josh Rouse, and for today, so far we have a beautiful Quique “genio” González (no surprise) song, and a group I like a lot, Pereza.

EIGHT. Tomy Mejías was interviewed by Madrid’s site, and the pictures were adorable!  Once again, the canteranos take the prize in terms of adorable and not cheesy photos!  And there wasn’t a thumbs up in sight… it might have to do with him wearing gloves, but I’ll take it, I’ll take it!  View the rest of the gallery here.

In the interview, Tomás talks about Castilla, coming back from an injury and “debuting again.”  He also tells us that Iker is “the great reference of the club, the best goalkeeper in the world” and that “I still have a lot left to do to become anything like him… I would like to have his agility, his reflexes and his tranquility, although I consider myself a very tranquil goalkeeper.”

NINE. More tweets from Álvaro today:

He mentioned that he plays in two fantasy football leagues, “one with friends and the other with Canales, Mateos and Albiol.”  So one follower tweeted him back, does that mean that Canales, Mateos and Albiol are not your friends?  Álvaro’s reply was, “they’re only teammates… and bad ones at that.”  Jajaja!!!  I love it!

Oooooooooh. That hug is really intriguing. I doubt it’s anything about his personal life. It could be about Mou’s. Or it could be that Iker has won some award or whatever. Iker will never make an announcement about his personal life in a press conference, much less let Mou do it for him. I hardly think that Mou will play the role of publicist for Iker either, even if he is the Captain.

If Madrid goes through to the next stage of the CL, I hope they don’t draw Schalke. I don’t think I’m ready to see Raul play AGAINST Madrid just yet.

Una, why did you think that the hug was about Iker’s personal life? Did something happen? Although the hug was very lovely, like a son to his father. They were very adorable.

    Hi una,
    Once again fabulous update!
Just wondering if you remember in this post:
how you alluded to how Iker had changed from how he was when he was younger… do you think if you had the time, is there any possibility that you could ellaborate on it? Cause’ it’s something I’ve been thinking about Iker vs the PR version of Iker. It’s odd.

Once again, thank you for your amazing work. Real madrid should hire you for their english version of their website!

Major shoe envy alert – love Carlotta’s shoes! The lioness’s pants are very nice as well – guess the ladies are making up for their significant others in the fashion department – those green pants belong on the golf course. “El Guapo” – not not surprising at all – Mou probably gave himself that nickname 🙂

I am sooooo curious about that hug! Mou better tell us what it is about but I doubt that it has something to do with Iker’s personal life because why would Mou talk about that at all? Maybe Mou finally agreed to no concentración before home games?

Álvaro and Carlota are such a cute couple, she is very beautiful. Pipita has missed Sergio so much that he had to copy his style!

      That’s a good guess!

Iker has been in a suspicious good mood for some weeks now. I’m very curious about it because he wasn’t in that sassy way since Becks days…
The guess of “no more concentrations” is really good.If true, I’m sure Iker would be the first to know. He pratically led a revolution against the concentrations. 😛

Are you Ikers girlfriend, Sara? (just joking)^^

        • March 11, 2011 16:50

Hahaha! I am not Carbonero ,but we do share a name.
So my guess was good even though it turns out its only for the Atleti game.

Pedro och Alvaro have good taste in women, not tacky like som players…

Apparently he’s been seeing an austrian reporter over the last few months. I think it’s safe to say all the boys of the meringues are taken.

I believe i once red that Higuaín was dating a girl named Luciana Salazar from Argentina. However she is not as classy as Pedro and Alvaro’s beautiful ladies, in most of her pictures she isn’t wearing any clothes – Why does most WAGs have halfnacked photos on the internet? Does the most players fall for thoes nacked-model types? 😦 ..

What is that huge empty space next to Pipita? hmmmm… interesting… o-O

Mou/Iker hug – oh the stupid speculative media…

Surprising to see that El Pirata enjoys Lucinda Williams. She has been around for many years and writes really great folk rock songs. One of America’s hidden gems.

Getting very excited for next weeks Champs League fixture!

OOOOOHH… really curious about the hug. The first thing that came to my head was “Maybe Sara’s pregant?!?!?!?!” but after reading that Mou was going to talk about it in the press conference … PHEW.

And the Carlota and the Lioness are both lovely. I think the lioness looks just a bit like Olalla (Fernando Torres).

Haha Alvaro is hilarious. I am also in love with his doggies.

  10. March 10, 2011 19:37

JOYEUX ANNIVERSAIRE LASS!! I cant believe we’re the same age, i thought Diarra was thirty somethg… Julie = bad , bad madridista 😉

Well that was annoying Iker. It’s most likely going to be ridiculously uneventful anyway. If it did have anything to do with Iker it would be some kind of award I assume. I’m sure if it was Sara related (which lets be honest most of you were/are thinking that) she would have said something or Iker wouldn’t have even mentioned it, and just shrugged it off.

How cute are those two couples! Hate those pants on Pedro’s girlfriend though.

I have to say too that all Moya does is bitch about Real Madrid related things on Twitter Arbeloa should stay away hahaha. Okay maybe not all, but every match he sits and rants about the team.

Is the reason for the hug that they don’t have a concentración for the Atleti match? I thought I heard something about that…

Awww, Chori! I love how he remembers the Arsenal v. Leeds United match! I’m a gooner myself, so to hear that a Madrid player has fond memories of the Gunners warms my heart. :3

Anywho, Una, your blog is just splendid and wonderful. You don’t know how much I truly appreciate you writing it. It is

awesome post Una full of amazing infos. But I start to worry about Pipa. I hope he just lent this green pants from Sergio. He needs to start taking advice from Xabi. Dont like Sergios influence on him in that case……

Carlota is looking absolutely stunning. Too sweet they tweet each other!

Wow what an emotional hug for a quited concentration!

    And beautiful pics of Tomas.

If anyone can help me out, what does “concentrados” mean? (A long definition isn’t required- a few words will do)- Thanks!

    • March 11, 2011 17:36

It means they have to gather (concentration) in an hotel on matches’ eve, even for home games so Mou is sure they won’t have a pim-pam cubatas night full of dance/sex/alcohol.

      March 11, 2011 22:08

Concentrados means “concentrated” so a concentración would be like a concentration. 🙂

Concentrated…I believe it’s used to mean that the players meet the night before the match (probably day before for away matches), have dinner and spend the night in a hotel together. Not all teams do this but it’s used by some coaches for team unity building as well as getting them to focus on the game only and not be distracted by other things or stay out too late the night before a game, etc.
