today’s dose of Real Madrid

March 24, 2011

Well, I wasn’t going to post any news today, because nothing of real importance happened yesterday in the usually crazy and wonderful world of Real Madrid, but I hated having a full “to do” folder, so here are today’s news briefs.

ONE. According to Marca, the shirts that Madrid wears next season will have gold trimmings, with Adidas’ three stripes turned to gold, and a gold border on the collar.  That’s how they imagine it will look on Cristiano (left), and they also photoshopped Sergio Canales’ head onto the new shirt on their cover today.  Apparently, they are also considering having the bwin logo, the Adidas logo and part of the escudo in gold as well!  What, no Iker in head to toe gold?  I think all that gold might be a bit too much… and I don’t like collars.  The second shirt is black, but also trimmed with gold.

TWO. During Wednesday’s training session, Gonzalo Higuaín participated in a mini-game against Castilla for 60 minutes (two halves of 30 minutes).  Mou said later that he wasn’t in game shape, but he’s getting there.  Now there are rumors that he’ll be back for the Sporting game, for the game against Tottenham…  I just hope that he makes his return when he’s fully recovered, instead of rushing it.  But it looks like he might make it to the Copa del Rey final, but with the way that Benzema has been playing, and the fact that Cris is basically an unquestionable starter means that he’s got a lot of competition.

THREE. Mou said those things about Pipita during the presentation of an educational football DVD for kids, which he attended in support of his friend Luis Campos, who produced the DVD.  Mou also said that Cristiano has been excused from Portugal’s next two games, and that he hopes he’ll be back against Tottenham.  Mou of course got more attention than the DVD, and the first 40 people to buy a copy got to have theirs signed by Mou.

FOUR. Meanwhile, Cristiano said yesterday that he’s “sick of this injury.”  We are too, Cris.

FIVE. And by now, I’m sure you’ve heard of the strike that’s supposed to happen next weekend.  One of the people most affected by that will be our former goalkeeper  and canterano Diego López, currently at Villarreal, because his wedding is scheduled for June 11, and if the strike goes ahead, he’ll have to play Osasuna that same weekend.

SIX. Marca has an interview with Sergio Canales today and while it’s not very interesting, they do say that he’s working hard on bulking up, because it will help his football.  And his sponsor in this area is none other than Álvaro Robocop Arbeloa, who’s a “specialist” in building up muscle and a devotee of the gym.  Together, they spend many hours using the machines there and gaining muscle.  Where are Real Madrid’s photographers when we need them?  I wouldn’t mind a thumbs-up or mirror photo if either of them are showing us their muscles (or Cristiano, because you know he’ll want to get involved).

SEVEN. The adorable and down-to-earth captain of Castilla Fran Rico spoke to Madrid’s web site about his beginnings, the current situation of the team and Xabi Alonso.  Highlights:

on his beginnings: I started playing football in school in Portonovo (Galicia).  My father played as a goalkeeper for Portonovo and my entire family has always given me good advice.  My father and my godfather were two persons who had a lot of confidence in me in terms of football and they always supported me and cheered me up when I went through bad moments.  Then I had the opportunity to play in Pontevedra and that opened the doors here to me.

[His family has a restaurant in Portonovi with photos of Castilla on the walls.]

on his captainship: it’s an honor to wear the escudo and the captain’s bracelet.  All players here are proud to represent this club.  It’s a great responsibility and you have to know how to wear it.  On the field, you can never give up, and you have to be generous and caring.  This escudo represents many things and we’re very happy to represent it.

on Xabi Alonso: I like everything about Xabi [me too, Fran, me too].  He’s a very complete player.  Since I’m now playing a bit further back, I can compare myself to him.  Each time I watch him, I try to remember what he does in order to learn from him.  He dominates all aspects of the game.  He’s a very important player for the team, and a reference for me.

We also find out that there was a nice gesture during the Alcalá-Castilla game last Sunday: the captains of both teams gave their team shirts to Alcalá alevín player Frank Olivier, for being a wonderful sportsman.  In an alevín game between Alcalá and Castilla, Frank kicked the ball out of bounds when he had an opportunity to score so that a rival player could be attended to.  Fran called him an example for everyone, and said that he hopes this will happen more often and that footballers will be more sportsmanlike.

How cute is little Frank???  What a great smile!  And Fran too!

The shirt: too much gold, not nice at all, and with collars? oh my god, will look very cheap.
Mou has developed a tummy at RM as in the pic, hahaha, he does not work enough, let him watch out, we do not need fat coach…

I agree with you on the shirt.. It doesn’t look good, there’s too much gold :S
Also, great gesture to Frank Olivier, and great sportmanship from Frank! I wish a lot more people were like him 🙂

Yeah…too much gold. The blue is definitely better than the gold, imo.

I dont really like the new shirt too.
The golden color is too sharp and it doest suit for a sport uniform.
I think it doesnt really match the team’s culture as well.

I love the new shirts and contrary to Una I like collars, so I can’t wait to have one of them 🙂
    I also like Mou’s shirt 🙂
oh, just imagining my Alvaro working out in the gym makes me faint. and yes, he spends a lot of time there, I’m not able to say how long I waited for him in Valdebebas (2, 3 hours?), but fortunately I brought my laptop and there’s a coffee machine 😉

Salut Julie, answering your question: yes, I met the players. I have no time to run my own blog, so I sent a short summary of my last stay in Madrid to Una. I hope she finds time to publish it here soon. I also sent her some pics but they’re not good. Unfortunately the best ones went to be published elswhere. I tried to give the maximum information that I could in my report, so I hope you’ll like it.

I’m not too sold on the new shirts. I think I prefer the blue, or this one I hope the logos aren’t in all gold and iker head to toe in gold… NOOO!!!
Haha, and Cris’s torso is definately bigger than that in real life!

And Alvaro (haha Robocop) and Sergio C working out together!!!! I wonder if the gym is accepting job applications…

Fran is so cute!!! He looks like a less goofy version of El Chori!!! He is so humble and loves Xabi as much as we do! (But probably for different reasons, haha)

And what a nice gesture from Frank Oliver. I hope we see that more often (remember during the world cup final, when the out of bounds ball almost went into Iker’s goal?)

‘I wonder if the gym is accepting job applications… ‘ – unfortunately, I think they accept only men, I didn’t see any woman working in Valdebebas…

I saw that picture and was actually excited for THAT shirt…I dont like the gold at all 😦 The blue in the shirts gives them the POP of color they need…the gold doesnt do anything for them..I hope the person designing the kits for next season checks in here and makes a last minute design change! 😉

  4. March 24, 2011 13:48

That’s way too much gold for a sports uniform. Mehhhhhh.

And Fran Rico’s quite cute! 🙂

  5. March 24, 2011 14:53

I don’t like the new shirts.

Haha, the new shirt looks horrible. First of all, gold is only acceptable if you are actually winning a lot of prices, which ALTHOUGH I HOPE HOPE HOPE so, and we very well might, we can’t guarantee right now. I remember a couple of years ago, my other favourite team Ajax put little “1”s on their official team ties, to show that they would win the competition. They ended up third I believe, and it was consequently quite embarrassing. Also…. Golden armpit sweat sillhouettes?!

I actually quite liked the other suggested shirt, with the extended neckline… This year’s shirt was so good though! I want it again!

Also about the strike, I am so sad 😦 I just booked a flight to Madrid to see the last match of the year (Real Madrid – Almeria) and now it’s been postponed. Also, this will mean that Barcelona won’t have to face Villareal next weekend, which was a risky match for them without Xavi, Puyol and Abidal especially, which will not be the case if they play it in June.

    Thanks for the post!

An overload of gold trimming in addition to the red third kit? Yuck. Now I’m really glad I bought a home and third kit this year!

  8. March 24, 2011 23:19

gold just dont look good on me,and nahh i dont think i would have one..the old jersey much better, and i doubt everyone in the team can rock umm.. golden??*sigh*

poor thing,cris..get well very soon ok?

LOL i’m in for sergio c ‘mission'(maybe arbie should ask others too)..yeah,million times yes for showing off muscle..*thumbs up??*

Fran Rico, another humble and generous person in the team which is a good sign of Madrid’s future. I don’t think the Gold Jersey will look good, especially on the field.. maybe it will look good on others, but i do believe it won’t look good with most of the players.

I’m not sure what I think of the shirts…

‘Álvaro Robocop Arbeloa’ LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLL!!! I’m glad he’s helping BB Sergio, I’m sure we’ve all seen Arbie’s abs so we know he knows what he’s up to.

Cris & especially Gonzalo – please heal up before you come back. PLEASE!

How gorgeous is Mou? I do declare that man gets better with age, like a fine wine! (not to mention his manager abilities)

Best of luck and well done, Captain Fran Rico! You have excellent taste in idolizing Xabi, I definitely LOVE everything about him as well, what a football mind & skill in addition to all the other perfectness.

    Thanks again, Una!

  11. March 25, 2011 04:39

hm, the shirt might look okay without gold on the bwin or adidas logos. Not a huge fan of collars either, but as long as they change the font on the back to something else so “SERGIO RAMOS” doesn’t look like “SEAGIO AAMOS”, I think I’ll be okay with it =)

The 23rd WAS Jerzy Dudek’s birthday, you know! And yet you didn’t consider it ‘important’! 😛

    • March 25, 2011 08:38

I don’t consider anyone’s (not Iker, not Xabi, not anyone) birthdays “important,” because I really don’t think it makes a difference to them whether I wish them happy birthday on this blog or not.

why not, Una? it may be a good idea 🙂

    • March 25, 2011 08:39

P.S. You may not like Dudek, and I respect that, but I do, so please do not try and insinuate that I dislike him.

I think you’ve cut me to the quick! I know how much you like him, as do a lot of the other posters! :p

And it’s here that I’d like to clear up a little misunderstanding…I’ve always been a fan of Dudek as a goalkeeper, he is a terrific shot-stopper with fine reflexes, he’s solid and dependable on crosses…in short, I consider him to be a fine all-round goalkeeper. But what gets my goat is how he can be so happy with being on the bench at Madrid with practically no opportunity to play, when a lack of game time was the main reason why he left Liverpool in the first place. Given his talent and ability he could easily have become on of the greats of the game, in fact was rated by the IFFHS as the 15th best goalkeeper in the 2001-10 decade based on his exploits for club and country till 2005. Can you imagine how much of a behemoth he would have become if he hadn’t been on the bench for the second half of that decade?!

I certainly do NOT hate the Pole as a person, in fact after his initiative to ensure a moment’s silence for the victims of the horrific Polish air crash (One of those victims being his former national President Lech Kaczynski) my respect for him swelled up even further. It just breaks my heart and makes me mad to see him not fulfill his potential, even more to see him not even bothered. That’s why I’ve been so critical of him on this forum.

I hope this clears things up? 🙂

I believe everyone has a right to have his/her opinion about a particular player. You don’t need to apologize about having yours.

And another thing…maybe you think it won’t make a difference, but still it’s always nice to at least make a one-line mention of birthdays in your blog so that your posters can at least reply. You know what they say, “When you do something nice for others, you’ll feel good yourself!” 😀
