still in a celebratory mood

April 7, 2011

Madrid begins preparations for this weekend’s Liga game against Athletic today!  I’m súper excited for this game; I think you know why (!!!)!  But in the meantime, news items!

ONE. I like to err on the side of caution, but imagine this.  Both Madrid’s 4-0 win on Tuesday night and Barcelona’s 5-1 win last night in the Champions League mean that the two teams will, save spectacular collapses, qualify for the semifinals of the competition.  That would lead to four clásicos in 18 days.  On April 16, we have jornada 32 of the Liga.  Four days later on April 20, the final of the Copa del Rey.  If Madrid and Barcelona both advance, then the semifinals of the CL will be played on April 27 and May 3, with Madrid at home for the first leg.

There is also a possibility of another match-up (assuming we’re all still alive at that point), because the Spanish Supercopa will pit the Liga champion against the Copa del Rey champion, and in the case that they’re the same team, against the Copa runner-up.  The Supercopa is two-leg contest.

TWO. Some Champions League data: Madrid is tied with Barcelona as the top goalscoring team of the tournament, with 23 goals (that’s 2.5 per game), and have taken the most number of shots at goal, 78.  They’ve also allowed the second fewest number of goals, three, after Manchester United, and have not allowed any goals at home, thanks to the wonderful work of all three of our goalkeepers.

THREE. Karim Benzema has recovered from his left thigh injury and will train with the team today.  That means that Mou will be able to count on three of his forwards for the game in San Mamés, Higuaín, Benzema and Adebayor, as Cristiano will most likely be rested.  It’s also likely that he will rotate his team, to give Marcelo and possibly Carvalho a break as well, with Arbeloa and Albiol coming in for them, respectively.  That’s both good and bad news, because, as you know, a Madrid-Athletic game is the ideal event for me to charge the field after the game, and Álvaro “Robocop” Arbeloa is definitely on my list of shirts to rip off, although I would like Cris to be there as well when that offensive takes place.

FOUR. According to Marca, José Mourinho prohibited Sergio Ramos from presenting an award to David Bisbal on Monday.  On that night, Sergio was staying at the Mirasierra Suites with the rest of his team, preparing for the game against Tottenham.  At the same time and the same place, a press group was handing out their annual “Naranja y Limón” awards (orange and lemon, with the orange award given to the nicest public person and the lemon given to the most “sour” one).  Bisbal had won the orange award that year, and he wanted an athlete to present it to him.  Rafa Nadal and Alberto Contador had prior commitments, so Sergio was the chosen one.  He wanted to do it, but Mou wouldn’t let him, as those types of things are prohibited during the concentraciones, and because it was scheduled at the same time as his technical talk with the players!  Also considered was what kind of image would be presented if the second captain took the time to do something like before an all-important game.

FIVE. In an interview with AS, Manolito Adebayor said that he’s “very, but very happy with how things unfolded against Tottenham.  I’m happy for how the team did and what I did as well.  What happened on Saturday against Sporting was a tough blow and on Tuesday we said to each other, ‘we’re here and we’re going to fight.'”  He also said that he doesn’t read the Spanish press because his language skills are not up to par yet, and that he would like to stay, but that’s up to the club.

SIX. And if you’re wondering why Kaká is walking around with stubble on his face, quite unusual for him, it’s because he’s renegotiating his contract with Gillette.

SEVEN. A wonderful gesture from Antonio Adán: he has donated sports equipment to an initiative created by fans of Rayo Vallecano, which will be sold or auctioned off in order to help out the Madrid team.  Rayo’s owner Nueva Rumasa is facing bankruptcy, and their players and staff haven’t been paid in months, despite sitting atop the table of the second division.  The club is struggling to pay many expenses, ranging from equipment to the team bus.  Many footballers have tweeted or expressed their support for the team.

EIGHT. Castilla retook their team photo yesterday, as they changed coaches mid-season.  Thus, the players, Alberto Toril, Jorge Valdano and Miguel Pardeza were photographed together.

NINE. The next Real… interview will be Marcelo!  The program will air tomorrow at 18h.

too many el classicos, too many! i would like to see them all but i am afraid my friends will just take the tv and pc away from me! (not football fans unfortunatelly). and let’s not think about the stress!

I don’t understand. So Kaka’s not allowed to shave because he’s still renegotiating his contract? Or is he trying to send some sort of message?

Una, a very important question : If we win the Copa will Barca have to do the pasillo in the champions league game? ( or if Barca wins god forbids,*shudders* will we have to give them a pasillo in our stadium?) What are UEFA’s regulations on this? Do they allow pasillos? Or they don’t care?

    Lots of questions, sorry 🙂

    • April 8, 2011 09:05

I’m pretty sure that UEFA won’t allow that, if they wouldn’t even let the players show their support for Abidal…

Why would the pasillo have to be during the CL game on the 27th? Wouldn’t there be a league game in between the CDR final and the CL match, on the weekend of the 23rd? Surely whoever the winner plays that week will do the pasillo then, no? or have I missed something?

      • April 9, 2011 12:50

If I remember correctly Real Madrid received pasillos from the other teams they faced after that clasico too. So I think the tradition is to do the pasillo till the end of the liga.
Anyway, I don’t think this applies to CDR and like Una said UEFA won’t allow it.

Una, yes, go to San Mames on Saturday, I will virtually be there with you, helping you rip the shirts off 😉
Mou’s behvior at the hotel when he prohibited Sergio to present the award sounds reasonable to me. High five to Mou.

The two gifs had me smiling like an idiot as I was reading the whole post. 🙂 Thanks for that!

Why couldn’t we have been in another bracket should we reach the semi-final (i know it’s almost safe to say that we’re in the semis already, but still)? I feel like 4 Clasicos would just be too much for my poor heart to handle. But! I believe we can do this!!! 🙂 This month’s just going to be so intense!!

Should there be news about someone charging the field and ripping the players’ jerseys after the RM-Athletic game, I would automatically think of you, Una! Hahahahaha. And hopefully, you’d do an impressive job. 🙂 For you and the rest of your readers! 🙂 Haha

I think it’s fair to say that given the huge points difference between second and third in La Liga, the Supercup will also be a Clasico! So maybe we should call this series of matches a ‘super-series’! Hopefully there will be no injuries or suspensions for any of those matches!

Regarding item #1, just. Holy mother of god. I’ve been thinking about it for a while now, and I don’t think my heart can take that many clásicos. Also, I’m glad Karim’s already recovered!

#6 made me laugh. It could be a ‘True or False’ question on a test.

Actually it will be six games for la Supercopa, coz it’s a 2 legs title… this will be known as the famous year where los Madridistas suffered from high blood pressure, heart attacks and sudden deaths if things reach the extreme… this is gonna make HISTORY! scary 😦

Possible FIVE matches?! Oh, I’m going to need some sort of medical help to get through all these matches because I will be going mad. Let’s hope Shaktar can knock Barca out (HA!)!

Thank you for the news updates! This is my go-to site for all my RM news!

I want to feel optimistic about Real facing Barcelona potentially 4 times in the coming weeks, but to be honest, I’m very nervous!!!

    possibly *5* clasicos?! madre mia!

much as i would miss seeing him on the pitch, i kind of hope mou rests iker this weekend, too. between liga matches, CL matches and international duty, he could do with a break so he stays sharp. (besides, una, then you won’t have to divert your attention between him and !!!)

that is a lovely gesture from adán, it would be nice if more players throughout la liga would follow suit.

was that sarcasm about kaká or is he seriously withholding from shaving until the new contract is signed?!

by the way, do any of you watch special 1 TV? i think it’s funnier and you get the jokes more if you follow the english premier league, but this week’s episode featured a bit about the RM/spurs match (as well as a naughty little dig at fernando torres, if you’re a spain fan) as well as a bit about a statue of mou outside the bernabeu. it’s worth it alone just to see the send-up of mou as the host of the show. heh!
