all set for Barcelona (last time this season)!

May 3, 2011

Love the colors of the shirts!

Madrid trained yesterday afternoon on field number three of Valdebebas, before making their way to Barcelona for tonight’s Champions League semifinals against Barcelona (20:45h). At the training session, the 20 available first team footballers (Gago and Khedira are still injured, while Sergio and Pepe were excused because they are suspended from tonight’s match) were joined by canterano Nacho.

The list of players called up for the game was announced after the session, and 19 footballers made it.  The four injured/suspended players were naturally left off, as were Sergio Canales and Pedro León due to the coach’s decision.

Goalkeepers: Iker, Dudek, Adán.

Defenders: Carvalho, Marcelo, Arbeloa, Albiol, Garay, Nacho.

Midfielders: Granero, Lass, Kaká, Alonso, Di María, Özil.

Forwards: Adebayor, Higuaín, Cristiano, Benzema.

The team then flew to Barcelona, arriving around 19h at El Prat, later than expected as their flight was delayed due to the inclement weather in Madrid.  They then headed to the Juan Carlos I hotel, arriving about five minutes after Athletic’s delegation left for the Cornellà-El Prat.

Meanwhile, over in Switzerland, UEFA’s Control and Disciplinary Body’s vice president, as the sole judge in the case, rejected the complaints of both Madrid and Barcelona after the first leg game, meaning that no action will be taken on Madrid’s claim of unsportsmanlike behavior from Barcelona.  The decision can be appealed, and Madrid said via a communique that they are studying the possibility of appeal.

With regards to the dismissal of Barcelona’s claims, it’s not because UEFA found them invalid, but because there can’t be two cases alleging the same thing, and since UEFA is already investigating whether José Mourinho made “inadequate declarations” on their own, they invited Barcelona to join their case.  Barcelona said yesterday that they will.  A decision will be handed down on Friday.  Somehow, I’m not surprised.

Aitor Karanka and Karim Benzema spoke to the press from the Camp Nou.  Our assistant coach told journalists that he didn’t agree with UEFA’s decision, saying, “an organization that prides itself on “respect” and “fair play” has not sanctioned players that have no respect, who hurled racist insults, covering their mouths so that no one could see… while two players [Pepe and Sergio] who didn’t do anything will not be on the field.”

(Let me just say that I don’t believe Madrid would accuse Sergio Busquets of racist insults, as they did via the video on their web site, and Aitor Karanka indirectly here, if they didn’t have proof, because it’s a serious allegation with serious ramifications.  Also, Barcelona has been silent on this whole issue and has not responded, when the first thing they would have done if the accusation were false would have been to deny it, as that would severely damage the image of the club, and we know how concerned they are about their image.)

Karanka went on to say that “Madrid was punished for something that wasn’t specified in the rules [the sanctions/fines handed out after the game against Ajax], and now Barcelona has not been punished for something that is in the rule book.  Once more, it’s been shown that there are different standards.”  Aitor also sent out a message: “we are Real Madrid and we’re going to fight until the end, we have 109 years of history and we’ve won nine Champions League cups.”

Karim Benzema was much more brief in his discourse, saying that the team will do everything they can to win and that Cristiano is a great player, and that the team needs a great Cristiano.

In their appearances before the press, Pep Guardiola and Xavi had this to say.  Pep said, in response to a question about the possible racist insult directed at Marcelo by Busquets, “I know my players very well and they’re an example of professionalism and honesty.  Of course they can make mistakes on the field, but as human beings they are examples.”  In regards to another question about the racist comments, Pep said, “if we do something wrong, then UEFA has to decide.  It won’t happen again.”

Let’s break this down.  First up, if Sergio Busquets did insult Marcelo, it cannot be considered a mere mistake.  Busquets KNEW what he was saying, that’s why he covered his mouth.  Second, is Pep indirectly confirming that it did happen, with the mistakes statement?  Then how can he continue believing that one of his players is an “example” as a human being?  I had hoped that Pep wouldn’t stand for it, because it’s not something that a “professional, honest and exemplary” human being would do, but I guess not.  And lastly, “if we do something wrong, then UEFA has to decide.”  Once again, as the “professional, honest and exemplary” human beings that Barcelona claims they are made up of, shouldn’t the club do something about this, regardless of what UEFA does?  If they don’t do anything about it themselves, it’s the same as saying the action is okay.

Meanwhile, Xavi started off his press conference as claiming “I’m not anyone to judge the behavior of Madrid’s coach.”  He then went on to say, “Mourinho is a controversial coach, he’s always been one.”  Sounds like judging to me, Xavi!  In the same response, he also said, “it saddens me to talk about things not related to football.”  However, later on in the press conference, he would speak about Madrid’s complaints to UEFA, which he described as “shameful and pathetic, so it’s logical that UEFA should reject the complaints.”  Xavi also said, Barcelona has always respected opponents and shown exemplary behavior.”  And before anyone accuses me of bashing Xavi, I’m just reporting what he said, and making some observations.  It’s up to you to judge whether you find his words logical or laughable.

And in news that should put all of this in perspective, our canterano Marcos Alonso (currently on loan to Bolton) was involved in a car accident early yesterday morning in Madrid, which ended up with one person dead.  The night started off with Marcos going out with former canterano Jaime Navarro and Miguel Alonso, and continued until seven in the morning, when the three of them, plus two girls they had just met, left a bar in an old BMW that belonged to Marcos’ grandfather, with Marcos driving.  According to the police, the car was traveling at high speed down a wet road when it suddenly veered from its lane, crossed into the opposite lane, knocked over and collided with a stone barrier.  Of the five people in the car, one was severely injured (one of the girls, who later died at a hospital.  She had not been wearing a seat belt), two seriously injured, one less seriously and one slightly (Marcos).  Two remain hospitalized (the other girl and Miguel, who are recovering favorably), while Jaime was released from after being treated for a fracture to his clavicle.

An alcohol test administered at the scene showed a 0.45 for Marcos (anything above a 0.25 is positive), but he asked for a blood test, saying that he had not been drinking that much.  He also broke down at the scene and had to be attended to by psychologists.  He spent the day making declarations to the police, and also went to court to respond to four charges: one for endangering road safety, one for drunk driving, one for unintentional homicide and one for injuring others.  His driver’s license has also been revoked.  The lessons here: wear a seat belt, and drinking and driving do not ever mix.

To avoid ending on a somber note, here are some other, more upbeat news.

According to Marca, José Mourinho has donated €600,000 to those affected by the earthquake and tsunami in Japan.  He asked that this information not be publicized, but I guess someone found out!  What a grand gesture.

Steve McManaman, one of the goalscorers in Madrid’s 2-0 victory against Barcelona in the semis of the 2001-02 edition of the Champions League at the Camp Nou, spoke to AS.

We get an update on his life (he lives in Manchester with wife Victoria and their two daughters, works as a commentator for ESPN and even does programs in Spanish, and spends a lot of time in Spain, concretely Mallorca).  Macca also says that he watches Madrid every week, that he doesn’t understand why people in Spain dislike Cristiano and Mourinho, because “in England, everyone loves them,” and that what he likes most about Madrid is “Özil, the atmosphere, the stadium and the white shirts.  I adore everything about Real Madrid.  Xabi is also a phenomenon.  I also like the captain, Casillas.  When I played, he was just a baby.  And now he’s the captain of Spain, it’s incredible.”

Macca is also asked about that 2001-02 game, and he says, “what memories!  It was an unforgettable night.  We played in Barcelona and Zidane scored, and then I did.  I will never forget it.  It was as important a goal as the one I scored in the final in Paris (to bring home La Octava).  Then we tied at home and we were in the final in Glasgow.  Everyone knows what happened after that: La Novena.”

Meanwhile, over in Castilla, Denis tweeted yesterday “in love with Álvaro Morata, thanks!” after MFC dedicated his goal against Badajoz to Denis.  Right after that, Denis clarified, “in order not to create controversies, I’ll just say that we have a great friendship.”

Congrats to David Mateos, who won the Greek Cup this past weekend with AEK Athens, although he didn’t play in the final.  As he also participated in Madrid’s Copa del Rey campaign, he’s a double cup winner!

And I’ve also updated this post (see point three) with more footage from the note passing!

I haven’t read the whole post yet because it’s like 1 am and I’ll save it for tomorrow, but isn’t the winner of the Copa del Rey supposed to play the winner of La Liga for the Supercopa de España? The way things are going in La Liga, I think we will get another clásico, so this won’t be the last time they play this season or maybe that game is at the beginnig of next season? I don’t remember…

    • May 3, 2011 09:09

The games will be held during the beginning of next season, so this is the last clásico of this current season.

Xavi just reconfirmed his “ass” status.

And Pep….Una, it seems to be that he was dancing around the issue. Trying to placate both sides…the people who still support Barca, regardless of the proof of their diving/racial insults AND the people who now see Barca players (and possibly Pep) for what they are…cheaters and at least one of them is…racist.

He didn’t want to come out and admit to anything or blatantly apologize because he knew then that UEFA would have to do something or they’d look even more like they were in Barca’s back pocket. But at the same time he was trying to “apologize” without really officially apologizing (if that makes sense). I’m sure the Barca supporters heard what they wanted to hear…that their players were not in the wrong. To me…Pep’s just a snake in the grass; not the classy guy he tries to pretend to be and apparently so many people believe him to be. That’s one thing that I really admire about Mou…there’s no hidden agenda…no reading between the lines. He says what he thinks…no holds barred.

I really hope that Madrid appeals, if for nothing else but for the racist comment. I have to believe that once Madrid found out about the video, they asked Marcelo about it and Marcelo confirmed what was said. So, I like you, believe that there is truth to the allegation or Madrid wouldn’t have shown the video on their website nor would Karanka have made that statement. I mean seriously, if UEFA and Barca are already all over Mou for the comments he made after the game, I can’t imagine that they wouldn’t be all over Madrid/Karanka for these comments. UEFA…what a joke. smh

I feel so terrible for Marcos. Even if the blood tests show he was below the legal limit, I’m sure it won’t do much to relieve his guilt if he was driving. I’m sure it will affect the others in the car too, particularly in a fatal accident like that. I hope everyone else involved fully heals physically & emotionally, with the help of professionals, if needed.

Interesting note….another poster on this blog mentioned that the Madrid guys aren’t following Pique on Twitter. Which is true but the only Barca/SNT player they do follow is Iniesta. Guess that’s not a surprise, no? Even Xabi, Mr. Class himself, isn’t following Pique, Puyol or Valdes. Maybe they never were following them? idk but I hope all this drama doesn’t effect the SNT. :\

Xabi has never followed Piqué/Valdes/Puyol and vice versa. He rarely goes on Twitter anyway so I can’t blame him. As for the 3 abovementioned Barcelona players, I’m not sure if they follow(ed) Xabi’s twitter.

I have always said Pep is a snake and a sly character and people attacked me for saying it! THEY CLAIMED PEP IS CLASSY! I will never forgted the day I thought Pep was a snake! Like I have said her eon Una many times that thge day Preciado insulted Mou and many managers came out to support Preciado, Pep slyly sent a text to preciado (“I am with you”) the snake that is Pep did not want Mou to know. And to think he came out last week to speak about some “friendship.” what a snake!

Xavi – the guy is not going to stop is he? Such a shame because he is such a talented footballer. I decided to laugh at him from now on instead of continuously getting annoyed by his coherent and logical comments…

I wasn’t expecting much from UEFA and unfortunately, Pep joins the FC Barcelona people that have been cut off from my Respected Rivals list. They complain a lot about Mourinho but atleast Mou has always been this way, he doesn’t portray himself as a holier than thou human being.

What happened with Marcos Alonso’s accident is such a tragedy. When will everyone learn that drinking and driving just don’t go along with each other. Call a taxi, use the metro or other means of public transport but NEVER drive after drinking. The problem is that we all say ‘ it was just one cup I can drive’, my question is: Do you know the alcoholic content of that single cup? Different drinks have different levels of alcohol it is not about 1 cup or two.

Sorry about that lecture, but this topic always winds me up. My deepest sympathies to the family of the girl and believe me Marcos will never forget it.

You know, judging is something that all human beings are guilty of doing. I understand if Xavi decides to judge our team and our coach… but to contradict himself in a matter of a couple of minutes, I’m assuming, is something that bothers me. If he really had no intention of “judging” Mourinho, he should have just kept quiet.

Anyway, I am sick and tired of FC Barcelona coming clean– “IF we did that, we promise not to do it again” or some other lame excuses to cover up for whatever wrongdoings they are guilty of doing. If any spokesperson of FC Barcelona had the balls to apologize, I’d actually consider giving them the respect that they want.

On a lighter note, UnaMadridista… you never disappoint! Thanks for the overload of information. I hope our boys do not disappoint us tonight. HALA!

Una, Great job on both your blogs!

I just want to know what was your source for the quotes from Pep’s press conference. I watched the press conference in its entirety on RTVE and Youtube, and it seems that the quote you have is a bit deceptive.

The “if we do something wrong, then UEFA has to decide. It won’t happen again” was actually in response to a question a British reporter asked about Pedro’s pathetic diving (the reporter’s words). Diving – we can agree – both sides are guilty of.

Racist comments are a different matter. I only point this out because allegations of racism are really serious, and can ruin someone’s reputation – pretty much forever. “I know my players very well and they’re an example of professionalism and honesty. Of course they can make mistakes on the field, but as human beings they are examples.” This quote IS in reference to a question about Busquet’s comments. And he also repeats that his players are exemplary several times throughout the press conference in response to similar questions. In no way did Pep directly or indirectly confirm what Busquet’s said.

I agree if Busquets did say what the Madrid papers claim he said, then he should be punished and should probably not represent Spain NT again. But there really is no proof. He could be saying a number of things – perhaps “mano” (which would still be immature). Point is, lip reading is not evidence for these serious allegations.

Phew! These are tense times. But I think fans on both sides should be weary about what they read in the papers – most are propaganda that adds fuel to fire. Be weary of quotes out of context, manipulated images, etc. The behavior on the field has sometimes been hard to watch, but the deception, the lies, and the smear-campaigns the media is actually illegal in many countries… and harms the image of Spanish football and its players.

Rather than get sucked into club politics and the media’s attempts to profit off all of this, why can’t we just enjoy what we see on the field? Fans in many ways live vicariously through the players, and the players are our inspiration… before you let these supposed “truths” or “facts” crumble your image of a player – think about where these supposed “facts” are coming from. “Truth,” “justice,” and “fair play” will always be colored by our club allegiances. Let the media do their mud-slinging. There’s enough of it. Let’s just do our job as fans – support our players and enjoy the game.

    • May 3, 2011 11:40

Ok, I’ve clarified what I meant in the post, but my reaction is still the same: honest, exemplary, etc. players should not be racist or cheat by diving.

      • May 3, 2011 12:01

Well, I gave you the benefit of the doubt, but after another reader raised doubts, I went back and listened to the press conference again, and the UEFA comment WAS in response to a question about racist comments, and what the club would do if it was proven that there were comments along these lines.

It’s at the 13:53 mark of the RTVE video, since you mentioned that’s one that you watched.

One of the journalist here said that “obviously, Barca is treated like a common good in the world of football, that everyone is supposed to protect”. IMO, they deserve a serious kick in the ass to wake up and realize they’re not the center of the world. If UEFA keeps acting like this it will only encourage them to continue lying and manipulating.

This whole episode has left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Racism and bigotry have no place in today’s world. It’s pathetic to see Pep defend what Busquet did. What ever respect I had for him as a coach and person is now dead.

Busquet KNEW what he was saying. If he has any sort of pride, he would own up to it and just apologize. He does represent his club after all.

Barcas theater, it wasnt just in this game. Already in the 2 clasicos before. That famous pic where Sergio & Arby pulled up Villa shows how nerved they were of their theater already in the Kings cup.

Also UEFA is investigating the cases where the fans threw things. With taking into account how Messi provoked them at the clasico before at the Bernabeu I find it really unfair. And to write they dont see a plan in that, is like a hit into the face.

Added to the fact that barca players were trying to provoke and actually hit our players and officials right infront of the fans eyes.

If Barcelona is even half the club they are claiming they are, they should at least address this Busquets-racial-slur. RESPECT is not a hollow word, it’s not something you can just say without conviction.. and I’m disappointed in Puyol too, only because i held him in high regard as a rock in LA ROJA’s defense, i just thought that as a captain, this kind of thing wont sit right with him. I know Iker Casillas wont. I’d wager half of the money on my bank account, I’m sure Iker Casillas will not have this kind of thing between any of the Real Madrid players.

As for Xavi Hernandez, you can never find a footballer more arrogant than him, its partly why i like Iniesta more. I dont hate Xavi because he is good, (hate is such a strong word but hey) I hate him because he is cocky and he talks down on people, like he and Barcelona alone has the god given right to play football. Xavi is ridiculously good on the pitch, off the pitch, he’s just ridiculous. Grow up Xavi, nobody likes a prick.

I love Real Madrid with all my (breaking) heart, but I still can’t say the same for Mourinho, I support him though. But one thing that I admire about Mourinho (aside from his brilliant mind) is how he is able to look things in the eyes as he calls them by their right names, he calls it what it is. I wish I could say the same for Pep, but I can’t, he has mistaken being classy with being a coward.

I just hope none of this affects LA ROJA to the point of players breaking ties with each other. Vicente Del Bosque FTW!!

    HALA MADRID!!

p.s. and I wanna ask any cules out there, harmless question, does this kind of uhm.. win?? in all honesty, does it sit right with you? I don’t mean to offend, i just wanna know.

and I like so much his comment about Iker..”When I played, he was just a baby. And now he’s the captain of Spain, it’s incredible.” yes he right..when I became Iker’s fans 9 years ago..he just a junior..I often watched him with Zizou..and now Iker becomea an extraordinary captain for Real madrid and Spain.. 🙂
