thirty already?
Yes, it is a certain someone’s birthday today. AS and Marca both celebrated with him, and I’m celebrating with all of you by translating those interviews. Later on, if I can find them, I’ll try and post some pictures of Iker I’ve taken throughout the years.
These are the highlights of part II of the Marca interview.
Is Mourinho the same person with you all as the one he appears to be to the outside?
No, those images have nothing to do with each other. But that’s not saying that to the outside, he’s a bad person. He is how he is, he has his personality, his way of being and he’s helped us all a lot. It’s been gratifying and a relief to have the players relegated to the background. And then on the inside, I’ve seen things about him that I’ve never seen in other people. I don’t want to say that he’s better or worse than other coaches. From the time he came, he wanted all of us to be one family, and he’s achieved that.
And how are you doing as the oldest child of this family?
With each day that’s passed, I’ve become more content with him. The relationship we have is frankly very good. What I’ve tried to do is help everyone, and to instill in them what this club means. We’re a fairly young team, with an average age of less than 25 years, and sometimes we have to demand more maturity. I believe this season has been good for them because they’ve lived through a real experience.
[It’s strange for me to see Iker talking like this, because I still remember him as the 18-year-old who burst onto the scene in 1999. This is how I remember Iker]:
Out all the young players who joined this season, who surprised you the most?
Di María had some incredible games. He’s always showed up for the most important games. He’s a very good player. He not only works hard, but he also runs and pressures, as well as scores goals. Õzil has also impressed me, he’s another fantastic player who the fans are enamored of. He’s a phenomenon. Marcelo is also young and he’s had a great season, but we’ve seen him grow up and that’s why I wasn’t too surprised. But it’s true that he’s improved a lot and he’s been great. He and Cristiano Ronaldo have a great understanding on the left wing. Together, they’ve done a lot of damage.
What do you think about the signing of Nuri Sahin?
I’ve watched some of his games in the Bundesliga and he had a fantastic season. He’s a good footballer, young, and I’m sure he will be good for us because he has quality. It’s not easy to triumph in German football.
What are your thoughts on Cristiano Ronaldo and his record breaking 39 goals?
To me, it’s incredible that he’s scored 39 goals. If I were him, I wouldn’t know what to think, because after scoring so many goals it’s not normal that we didn’t win the Liga. He’s shown that he’s a player with very impressive conditions.
Does it bother you all that in some games, during some plays, he’s made a fuss or gestures towards his teammates on the field?
I’ve spoken with him and there’s nothing wrong. We also know that there are two or three cameras following him during each game. Cristiano is the reference of this team, the flagship, and I can only say he’s a winner. It’s happened to me a lot too, that I’ve been caught with a frown or a scowl. The good thing about Cristiano Ronaldo is that he always wants to win.
Why do we always see the same people celebrating with Cristiano?
I don’t know. Marcelo, Pepe and Cristiano get along very well, they’re together the entire day, joking around. Each one is how he is. There are more serious ones, such as Xabi Alonso, and those who like to joke around. Each one brings his personality to the team.
Are you less motivated now after winning so many titles?
No. My goal now is to win my fifth Liga, my third Champions, my second Copa del Rey… I have the same illusion as I did on my first day, the same desire to improve, to lift up titles, to make history with Real Madrid. I’m recharged to begin a new season. I have a lot of confidence in myself and my teammates.
And the Ballon d’Or?
That will come only if it wants to come. At the moment, I have a Zamora trophy, which I like a lot. I’m more preoccupied with winning titles on the collective level than the individual level.
What do you think about Raúl’s German adventure?
It’s incredible. He seems to be five years younger, with all the goals he’s scored. He’s been a semifinalist in the Champions and he’s on the verge of winning a trophy. We’re very happy for him in the locker room, that he’s still an elite player.
And in good news for everyone (except maybe Adán, Mejías, Pacheco, etc.), Iker also said this:
The position of goalkeeper is not as physically demanding as that of a field player. If you have a good head on your shoulders and you take care of yourself, you can play until you’re 40, like César, Ricardo or Palop. Being the goalkeeper of Real Madrid requires a lot of sacrifice, but I like this challenge. I feel better now than I did two or three years ago.
Meanwhile, AS also celebrated Iker’s birthday several days ago, when he went to their offices.
When they presented him with a cake, he said, “who would have thought it, 30 years already!” He later said, “right now I feel better than ever. I’m thinner, I take better care of myself, I know what foods I should eat…” The article says, “it seems like just yesterday when he was taken out of art class to travel with the first team to Norway. He was 16 years old. At the age of 18, he debuted in San Mamés and when he was 19, he won the Champions.”
Iker also spoke about winning the only title he was missing, the Copa del Rey: “the road to the Copa del Rey was not easy. We had to eliminate the champion and the runner-up. Of the final, what can I say. It was a different game. The presence of the fans, the fan zone, the excitement of the people… and of course, everything is much better when you win. Did I know that the king was holding onto me when I lifted up the Cup? Of course I knew. He’s always been very affectionate with me.”
I wonder if the king will wish the national treasure a happy birthday?
ooooh it would be so great to see your photos Una!! 🙂
Aw, what a beautiful tribute to Iker, no? I can’t believe he’s 30 years old!
(It’s actually also my [19th] birthday today, hehehe)
Happy birthday, San Iker! 🙂
Happy birthday, Kristin!
“right now I feel better than ever. I’m thinner, I take better care of myself, I know what foods I should eat…”
did he used to struggle with his weight? he is a bit on the thin side now.
That caught my eye, because it’s not like he ever needed to lose weight. To be quite honest, I think he looked better and healthier before when he had more muscle/meat around his bones. But I guess the important thing is that he’s happy.
loved this article and post…thank you for sharing. I hope Iker has an awesome birthday with his family and friends…and of course the love of his life!! 🙂
Happy birthday Iker!!!
I wish our amazing Captain a very Happy Birthday!
It feels very weird to see him turn thirty, I still remember him when he was this skinny 19 year old and the commentators wouldn’t stop mentioning his age all the time!
I wish him all the happiness in the world 🙂
Hi Una,
Since I’m guessing you live in Spain, you can probably buy the papers, but just wondering what you think of Marca’s new set up ( most of the content is hyped, but they do have some great blogs and interviews).
It’s now pay per type subsciption like the times. what the hell?
Anyway thank you once again for your news round ups and translations.
As we say in Australia, you’re a LEGEND!
cheers.
I’m not sure what you mean by now they’re pay per type subscription. Actually, they just recently they began publishing on their web site the interviews and other articles that before you could only see in the print edition.
Thanks for replying Una.
I don’t know, they’ve got this orbyt application if you click into some of the links, but since you’ve brought that up I’ll keep note of that. Cheers
Happy Birthday Iker! May he stay with us for many many years to come 🙂
Thanks for the translations Una and Feliz cumpleaños to Iker!
I like him more and more with each interview I read, and the thought her puts into the comments he makes. It is weird to see him reach 30- as you say, the guys been around since 16. Looking very good in that photo for AS, I must say…(I see some writing on the top right, but lets hope there isn’t some more on the back!)
awwww, thirty already I feel old too, since I started watching him when he was 19! Happy Birthday my Iker, many to come with us, I really love this guy and I am so happy he is a madridista and the captain <3, he is the pride and apple of madridismo eyes.
I knew it, that he is friends with the king! It was obvious lol.
That 30 candles makes me wanna weep. Years gone by, he’s always there, keeping his goal and defending his team and teammates. In fact I prefer him like a cutie kid to a perfect captain, or San Iker, though he’s already grown perfect. Wish him good mood and health always. And surely, Happy Birthday.
“Marcelo, Pepe and Cristiano get along very well, they’re together the entire day, joking around. Each one is how he is. There are more serious ones, such as Xabi Alonso”
THE ENTIRE DAY? Why am I not surprised?… And I love that Xabi is really called out as the serious one.
And, Una, have you seen the video Iker posted on his Youtube channel (the first and only video so far!)? It’s short (10 seconds only) and it’s mainly Segio saying something and Iker laughing at the end. Would you mind translating? I normally wouldn’t ask, but since it’s only a 10 second video, maybe you could oblige?
By the way, what does “crack” mean? I tried Google and it doesn’t come up. I suppose it’s slang?
“Crack” means something along the lines of “superstar,” it’s very common for these guys to refer to each other as “crack.”
Happy birthday, Iker! I can’t believe he’s 30!
Who doesn’t love this flawless man? The embodiment of the Real Madrid crest… the intelligent leader with a good heart… the sensitive man with the perfect profile 🙂
And thank goodness for his adorable Facebook! I’d even go so far as to say the manpurses are growing on me (and really, that’s only because they’re attached to him).
Thanks for sharing the love, Una. Feliz cumpleanos, Iker!
Happy happy birthday dear captain!!! Wishing you many more years at Madrid and at the NT. And more trophies to lift!!! 😀
Happy Birthday Iker!!!
Thanks UnaMadridista!
Iker is unbelievable. amazing. If I had a colleague like that in my preschool/school/university/work I’d be head over heels in love with him, like crazy.
Happy birthday Iker:) So proud of him being our captain :).Hopefully his life will be even more fulfilled:) And I hope to see mimi-Iker in the future:)
Iker, happy birthday!!!!! Wish you all the best and win all the titles for the coming years!!!!
I’m so glad that you have the Copa del Rey finally, while I feel sad about Raul missing it, so pls. do the best and help Madrid to win more and more!!!!!!
Thanks Una, I check your blog everyday, and fall in love with the team more!!!!!
feliz cumpleaños Iker Casillas
les deseo todo lo mejor 😉
Gracias Una for this posting..love it 🙂
The perfect man. Iker is really that and more.
Again, I wish him a wonderful year ahead, and hope that we achieve the treble this year.
Gosh it feels like yesterday when I saw him debuting at the Bernabeu, which was my debut there as well. Who would have thought that 12 years later hed have won everything and being the captain of RM and Spain, the worlds best goalkeeper? Whenever I think about it I find it incredible. What a legend! Iker, Im so damn proud of you! RM without you would just not be the same.
Happy bday Captain!!! Gotta love him!
¡Feliz cumpleaños Iker!
Seriously, could this man be any more perfect? In addition to being an incredible captain and team player, he’s also a sincerely humble man and amazing role model. He deserves every bit of the success and respect he’s earned….not to mention he’s absolutely gorgeous (current hair situation and all)!
he IS a national treasure! and i hope his birthday wish comes true, and he stays in net for the next 10 years! te amo, mi amor grande!!
Hi Una, thanks for translating this wonderful interview.:)
I have a question. Could we read the whole interview in Marca website? Because I onle saw the first part but not the second. Or it’s just on the paper version? Thank you! 🙂
I don’t know, they might get around the publishing the second part, like they did the first part.
