a trophy or a work of art?

June 2, 2011

AS has a picture of the Copa del Rey trophy – you know, the one that Sergio Ramos dropped in front of the bus – in today’s edition.  The Cup is currently being exhibited in the museum of the Spanish football federation in Las Rozas (I wonder if Sergio visited his old friend while he was there with the national team?), and I’m sure it will be a crowd pleaser.

It appears that the jeweler responsible for making the Cup either decided not to fix it, or it was simply impossible, because as you can see, it’s still broken and in several pieces, with dents all over the place.  In any case, this Cup is now probably one of the most famous in the world, and it would be a shame to cover up its unique history, no?  And doesn’t it now look more like some kind of art installation than a trophy?

hahahahahahaha! I would visit it and take pictures with it too. I never knew that Ramos is an artist too. Oh Sergio, I am the only one who think this is actually funny and I didn’t mind him dropping it :P. It made it better, something else to remember!

I love that they’re exhibiting it now!

Totally agree with what you said – this is a part of history, and even though there were/are many critics, I do believe that when they first read the news about Sergio dropping it, everybody cracked up!

It’s sort of a relief to see such funny things happen in today’s world where, apparently, as a public person, you’re not allowed to do anything wrong. Guys, nobody’s perfect, you know?

(Yet, I feel for the jeweler… But, hey, he made a reserve-copa – so he was prepared for such an incident 😉 .)

I mean, we all knew he had arte, but I didn’t think it extended to modern art. Perhaps we should read it as some sort of statement on the dangers and ultimate futility of fame and sporting achievement. A footballing reinterpretation of memento mori, if you will…

(I kid, I kid. Oh, Sergio, what have you done?!)

It’s a work of art! Mr Ramos is a deconstructionalist artist! Still, I hope they’ll keep the supercopa away from him in August. 😀
I like that they are exhibiting it like this, since Sergio started a trend and all!

All the cool kids are copying us. Here’s how Ajax celebrated its Eredivisie win –

I still think the way Sergio threw it off has the most innate style – but you have to admire the technique involved.

I think that will be THE most famous trophy in football history now. I might be a bit delayed on this, but the Ajax keeper also dropped their trophy. 2 Manchester United players, on the other hand, thought it would be funny to pretend they dropped the trophy during the parade. What a trend Sergio has set! 😀

Hahahahaha! Pobrecito, he’s never going to live that down! When we win our next trophy, sergio should only be able to hold it if there is some sort of safety cord attached (like children and their mittens). Heh. :p

So my question is, which copa does the winner get to take home next year? Best thing is if we win it again, PROBLEM SOLVED! also, maybe the jeweler should make another back-up copy…you know, in the case that Sergio gets to make a twin =).
