all set for Hertha!
Our boys traveled to Berlin today, to take on Hertha in their fourth friendly of the pre-season, after the three in the United States (the unlucky people in Madrid have to wait for about three more weeks before getting to see their beloved Real Madrid play, but then again, the game is the first leg of the Supercopa de España against Barcelona).
On the way to Germany, Iker posted this adorable photo of him and Mesut Özil, and probably got Ozi or Sami Khedira’s help to post a message in German: “gegenüber deutschem Boden!” which Iker’s favorite (and overused) Google Translate tells me means “over German soil.”
The team was cited to be at Valdebebas at 08:30h in the morning to begin today’s road trip to Berlin, which will culminate with the friendly against Hertha at 18h in the Olympic Stadium. After a three hour flight, the 2o players called up for this game and the rest of the expedition arrived in Berlin around noon.

I love how Álvaro is carrying a book! Who’s going to ask him via twitter what book he’s reading?
Everyone received a little stuffed bear (as the bear is a symbol of the city) as they walked from the plane to the bus. I love how Cris used his to nuzzle Karim Benzema, although Karim didn’t look too happy… Fabio Coentrão and Chendo could be seen later on with the bears still in hand. A gift for their kids, perhaps?
The team then headed to the Ritz Carlton hotel, where they rested and partook in an autograph session.

What happened to Iker’s hair? Why is it so flat? And why can’t he use a Real Madrid backpack like the other boys, instead of his own, questionable though better than the purse, backpack? And maybe he should hang out more with Marcelo Sunshine – he might get a tan in the process.
At the session, Mesut Özil and Sami Khedira were of course the most sought-after players. And I loved that someone even asked them to autograph the old jersey with Siemens as a sponsor – another German connection! Meanwhile, Raúl Albiol, Xabi and Iker were looking quite boss in their white shirts, although the stripes kind of make them look like they’re in the navy or something. Yes sir, Captain Alonso, right away sir!
Zinedine Zidane didn’t travel with the team, perhaps because the site of the game holds a bit of morbo for him – the Olympic Stadium is where he played his last game as a professional, during the 2006 World Cup final between France and Italy, which is of course known for that headbutt to Marco Materazzi. FP did not travel either, so the club is represented in Germany by Emilio Butragueño (who arrived carrying huge bags of Real Madrid merchandise) and vice president Eduardo Fernández de Blas.
And yes, Kun is going to be a Manchester City player! Yay! End of that “Kunlebrón,” ¡por fin!

Ozi is wearing a Minnesota Twins baseball cap!! I am so proud of him as I happen to be from Minnesota!! YAY OZI!
Oh Iker’s poor hair 😐
Actually I guess his bag is of Reebok, as the backpacks of others are addidas, which will break some agreement? Only a guess.
No, it’s like the jerseys, they’re official team gear, so everyone uses it, regardless of which brand they endorse.
Mesut’s Minnesota Twins hat is so random.
I think he got it because the M is also for Mesut!
Ach du meine Güte! 😀
I really love Ikers post “gegenüber deutschem Boden” 🙂 It’s so sweet that he’s posting in German and that this message is so incorrect in the meaning makes it even sweeter.
But Mesut, why always the caps? There are tons of pictures with you and a cap. In my opinion he looks always like 14-year-old with it.
But Xabi would be a really handsome captain! It suits him 🙂
I am so thankful that Kun isn’t joining us. I was quite horrified at the very thought of this. Now all I want is for the Neymar to be off the table completely and I’m happy.
Is Ozil wearing a Minnesota Twins hat? I love the arbitrary choices European athletes make when wearing American sports gear. Did he just pick it because it had an M on it? I would love to be in on that thought process 🙂
WHY did Berlin get a signing session but Philly didn’t?! Not fair 😦
My absolute fav of all these photos is Cris, Benzema and the bear! So cute!
And, yes as happy as I am about Kun not joining us, I’m afraid this makes it more likely that Neymar would, which in my opinion would be 10x worse than Kun. Can we all cross our fingers that Morata’s performance this summer makes Mourinho want to give him a more permanent position on the first team???
I want to know where Ozi got a Minnesota Twins cap…
Just to let you know: He didn’t get help from Mesut or Sami because “gegenüber deutschem boden” doesn’t make much sense in german 😉
actually he said “face to face with german soil”
so again it’s all about the google translator 😀
he’s just so adorable ❤
If it made sense in Google Translate, it won’t make sense in real life.
It looks like Ozil is wearing a Minnesota Twins baseball hat. Which would be weird. Maybe another team somewhere else in the world has the same hat? Anyone know?
The bears are so cute!
And I just love the picture of Iker and Özil, it was nice to see Özil smile – it feels like he never does!

That’s a pretty cool pic of Jose, Cristiano, Özil, and Iker. Pretty sure you won’t like two of the poses haha
Yay! Thanks God Kun is not going to Bernabeu. The best news so far ;D
awww I love this pic:) Iker facebook rules!
I’m sure Iker asked google translate instead, or maybe Mesut, but I think at least Sami’s german is better than that (It’s not totally wrong, but it wouldn’t be said like that).
I love Iker…please don’t get me wrong. I think he’s a handsome man. But in that pic he is really pushing the Jim Carey Dumb & Dumber (hair style) look.
“Gegenüber deutschem Boden!” makes no sense whatsoever LOL.
I was there yesterday but was quite disappointed by both teams exchanging basically every single position throughout the match. It started as an entertaining match and ended being Berlin’s second tier vs. Madrid’s youth section. Kinda expected a bit more for the amount of money they made me pay for a friendly. But travelling to Berlin was fun as always!
The size of the crowd in front of the Ritz Carlton was very surprising for me, btw. Didn’t know so many people in Berlin are Madrid fans.
I’m german and I have to say “gegenüber deutschem Boden!” is not correct german! XD
So I think he did translate this via google trans too and not with the help of Sami or Mesut 😉
>>I love how Álvaro is carrying a book! Who’s going to ask him via twitter what book he’s reading?<<
I bet its a 'Game of Thrones' book. Theyre enormous.
Thats the tee-shirt he was posing with on the bus last week as well.
Hi Una,
I really enjoy reading your blogs. This would be the first time I’ve left a comment, though. Although I know you don’t like their “navy” shirts, do you happen to know where I could buy one? I think it looks very unique.
Thank you!
