ICYMI – the good edition

August 19, 2011

In case you missed it – Real Madrid vs. Barcelona [2011-08-17, Supercopa vuelta, 2-3].

First of all, congratulations to Barcelona for winning the Supercopa; Messi is an incredible player.  With that said, Madrid played an excellent game, and this season will be exciting, if there’s football that is.  I can’t believe I won’t get my share of Basque men/men with Basque names this weekend!  But anyway, here are the good and fun things from the Supercopa second leg game.

ONE.  Prior to the game, Xabi was like a field general, rallying the troops and looking muy jefe while doing so.  He has such a presence, no?

TWO.  Meanwhile, Sergio was running around, and his hair was once again looking fabulous.  I’m jealous of anyone who gets to run their fingers through it.

THREE.  More pre-game scenes: the triple towers of Rafa Varane, Tomy Mejías and MFC Álvaro Borja Morata Martín make everyone else look tiny!  And things look good for a future ABMM posing section…

FOUR.  And even more pre-game scenes, since this is one of my favorite parts of the game: Iker with his game face on, and Aitor Karanka warming up as well.

FIVE.  In the tunnel, we got a kiss between Sergio and Iker.  I love how Sergio rubbed Iker’s head first!  And for all those people who blamed Raúl Albiol’s foul on David Villa for killing the relationship between the La Roja players, well here’s precisely Raúl Albiol exchanging greetings with Pedro, Busquets and Piqué before the game.  But check out Xavi – he turns his head and sees Raúl there, I’m sure he hears him too, but ignores him.  Despite that, Raúl still gives Xavi a friendly pat on the back, surprising Xavi.  And Xavi calls Madrid’s image pathetic?

SIX.  And here, we have the one and only Zinedine Zidane looking très elegant in his suit.  He’s not bad at the posing thing either!

SEVEN.  Meanwhile, the halftime brought us these images of our players – Sergio, Xabi, Iker and Ángel di María – being boss.  Xabi, then Iker being boss in the span of several seconds… wow!

EIGHT.  Iker, for some reason, had “I. Casillas” on the back of his jersey instead of his usual “Casillas.”  I like how that sounds, “I, Casillas” (pronounced in English).  And he showed his profile is as beautiful as ever in the post-game interview with TVE.

NINE.  There weren’t too many sunshine moments for Marcelo in this game, but on the bench, his gestures and commentary made Kaká laugh.  Meanwhile, out on the field, Iker was expressing himself.

TEN.  The lighter side of the melee.  Top left: Kaká refusing to join in.  Maybe he was praying.  More players should follow his example.  I’m glad Cris did.  Top right: it looks like Xabi has influenced the team in more ways than one, as many of them, players and staff alike, struck his favorite pose while waiting for things to be sorted out.  Xabi’s in the golden circle because he started it all.  Bottom left: Rafa Varane and Tomás Mejías looked a bit scared.  I bet nothing would have convinced them to get off that bench.  Bottom right: Sergio Ramos and Pinto made up after the game.

ELEVEN.  The most curious image of the fight was “the man with the mustache,” as he has been christened, standing behind José Mourinho and Tito Vilanova, unperturbed by the events.  He soon became a trending topic on twitter as “the one with the mustache,” people started selling t-shirts with his face on it and Facebook pages sprung up, from fan pages to one claiming he’s Borat.  It turns out that this man is Francesc Satorra, who is in charge of the tunnels at the Camp Nou, and has been for more than 30 years.

TWELVE.  Iker, Xabi and Sergio congratulated Barcelona in their post-game statements.  Xabi was very diplomatic, as he explained that he wouldn’t comment on the melee, because he wasn’t able to see everything.  It’s been said before, but I’ll say it again: what a classy guy.  Meanwhile, Sergio asked the fans to forgive the team for not winning the trophy, and said he hopes we’ll continue supporting them.  There’s no need to say that at all, Sergio, especially when you continue doing things like showing off that body.  Just whip off your shirt and all will be forgiven.

THIRTEEN.  I love that Pep Guardiola took the time out to say a few words to Karim Benzema, perhaps congratulate him on his goal.

FOURTEEN.  The Xabi Alonso pose section.™  Love the runway turn!

Ahhh, Xabi’s leg, and Pep’s ass is quite nice too!

FIFTEEN.  Some people may ask why there are madridistas still defending and supporting José Mourinho.  Here’s how I see it.  As I said before, even though I don’t agree with everything he says or does, or how he says or does it, he has no qualms about expressing what many madridistas feel.  It’s been a while since our interests have been so well-defended, and that’s why he does have support from a certain sector of madridistas.  There are others who believe that he has damaged the image of the club with these actions and statements.  While that is true to a certain degree, especially with his finger on Wednesday, everything he does is for the club and the players, we have no doubt about that.  Plus, the team is finally playing well together, and that makes madridistas happy.

SIXTEEN.  According to AS, Real Madrid has admitted that Marcelo’s tackle cannot be justified and that Mourinho made a serious mistake in assaulting Vilanova.  It’s good to see that our club can admit when it’s at fault.

SEVENTEEN.  Other things:

While things were still calm (i.e. before the game), Iker posted a picture of him and “Moratita” and thanked Espanyol for lending their field to Madrid.  MFC makes Iker look tiny and wide!

Iker also posted this video.  It’s the story of a boy who on Aug. 8, 2006, ran onto the field at the Bernabéu to ask for Iker’s jersey.  Today, that kid is also a goalkeeper, with Puertollano, having been inspired by Iker.  Here’s the Marca cover from the next day, which says “Casillas gave out two presents.”  One is of course the jersey, and the other is the goal that Iker allowed, which he mentioned in his post.

As for those players who received red cards, they won’t have to serve their suspension until the next Supercopa, as federation rules were modified last month.  The amended rules says that the suspensions will be served “in the games of the same competition in which the infraction was committed.”

And poor Sergio Canales – he managed to get out of Real Madrid, only to be forced to pose like this with his new club, Valencia.

And, to get my Javi (!!!)/Athletic fix, I watched their Europa League game against Trabzonspor.  You know who plays for Trabzonspor?  Halil Altintop, twin brother of Hamit.  So, I’ve seen more of Halil in one game than I have of Hamit this entire pre-season.  That isn’t right.

yay I love the good edition! thank you!
Too bad about the strike, but I support the AFE in this. Are the Segunda B players striking too or will Castilla play on sunday noon?

At least we’ll see them at the Bernabeu trophy on wednesday, I’m looking forward to that.

    • August 20, 2011 16:59

No, the strike is only for the Liga BBVA (first division) and Liga Adelante (second division).

Thanks for showing the lighter side of the game, Una! I really like how Aitor and Rui now have monogrammed shirts, too. And of course, Xabi’s runway turns and Iker’s profile could make any game enjoyable.

I’m not a huge Mou fan, and he can be tactless and disrespectful at times, but I do appreciate the fact that he defends and protects his players and the club. He says what a lot of people think but are not supposed to say and he doesn’t care what people think of him, especially those people who would hate him no matter what. I have no doubt that he would go to bat for his players. And all of his players, including the ones that I respect and adore, speak so highly of him (even Peter Lion hasn’t said a word against him). It’s true that a lot of the club’s bad press is because of Mou, but most of the bad press is also undeserved.

(I only read the good .. cause I don’t even want to enter into the bad)

I want to just say that Real Madrid played a great game … And I hated the fact that it ended the way it did!!! I really thought it was going to go into overtime/penalties … And I agree with Pep .. I didn’t think we would win this game … But we had the luck that our goals went in!!!

I don’t have a problem with any Madrid player or Madridistas … Because everyone has their own opinion … And what they do on the field stays on the field … Because i doubt they are like that in person … But i really love how … after RM vs FCB .. 2 or 3 days after it … ppl are still talking about and saying this happen .. this didn’t happen and defending stuff that should not be defended … BOTH teams gave a bad image that night … And I do not agree with what some of the Barcelona players have said … especially the captain that night … (& Una you know its hard for me to say that) …

I hope that come December .. they play a cleaner a game … and nobody fights!!!! and ppl will stop bringing lassers to the game it is annoying I saw them in Madrid & I saw them in Barcelona … And I can’t believe how stupid & rude ppl are .. Would you like it if you had a lazer pointed in your face.. .NO!! .. soo why do it …

Hope its OK to do a 2 in 1 post here! The only observation I’m going to make on the “bad” edition, is that all of this extraneous stuff has no place in the game, and as for the racist comments in particular, whomever they may be directed at (and I’m not limiting this to the Real/Barca matches as sadly it happens at many other stadiums as well), the clubs and the league need to take a stand. As for the good edition I’m really trying to focus on the positive as well! Both matches made me very exicted for the new season – IF it ever starts 🙂 As I saw a much improved Real Madrid and am hopeful we will get great matches when these teams meet in the regaulr seaon as well. We should all be thankful we are able to watch 2 such great teams and enjoy a great rivalry witout it descending into what we have witnessed this past week. Have a great week end everyone – even if it is La Liga free!

I like how you always try to remain fair and impartial. If only our guys could learn a bit about Fairplay, loosing graciously.Great opening sentence.
Even I would admit that Messi is an incredible player but certainly NOT the best player in the world in my opinion.

Sergio’s hair did look a little extra amazing, didn’t it?! I LOVE tunnel shots! They tell you so much! Like Albiol being a sweetheart and greeting his national teammates (I’d skip Xavi too hehe) and Di Maria showing some boss-ness! In the photo with Pep’s butt, it’s Benzema’s pose that’s getting my attention. And the fact that Cesc is in desperate need of a haircut! I am soooooooo obsessed with the photo of Iker and “Moratita”! I couldn’t stop smiling when Iker first posted it! My only complaint is that next to Iker, Morata looks extra young…which makes me feel like even more of a pedophile haha.

Aside from Iker and Xabi trying to break it up, one thing that made me smile regarding the fight was when Higuaín went ballistic to defend Mesut (this in itself was cute), the person who succeeded in calming him down was Mascherano. Cross-team love gives me hope of a clásico that doesn’t end in a fight.

Also, thanks for separating these posts into good and bad! Great idea! 🙂

  11. August 20, 2011 00:20

Una, you know you are perfect, right? Thank you for making it into two posts. You are always so sensible. I feel sorry for bb Sergio having to do the thumbs-up pose again Always love the kiss between Sergio and Iker ❤

I love everyone who mimics xabi poses!! especially while looking classy whiles watching some unsavory events.

I agree with both your posts (the good and the bad), I think both teams had some pretty ridiculous moments and it is sad that a rivalry that could be so fun to watch ends up being a cringefest.

So the “bad edition” post brought back some of my post-clasico gloom, but this one made me smile. I’m always so grateful for your blog because it brings me some much needed perspective after I watch games and scream at the tv.

Also, I’m glad I’m not the only one who sat through Athletic’s very frustrating draw to get a Javi fix. Or more accurately, a Rojita fix, because they’re all my new favorite thing after this summer.

Hi! I love the blog and have been reading it daily since I found it. Since I haven’t been around this site since it started, I was wondering, how do you have such close access to all of these players? Also, what is the MFC part mean in MFC Álvaro Borja Morata Martín’s name? You mention that a lot. And finally, what do you know about Hamit? Why hasn’t he even been training with the team? I remember his games in the Euro 2008 and liked him a lot but I read online somewhere that he already wanted to leave Madrid because he felt “unimportant”.

    Thanks!

MFC means My Favorite Canterano. canterano is the term for the kids on the youth/training squads. She will frequently refer to him as MFC ABMM. Hamit is still recovering from back surgery performed at the end of June.

Sergio whips his hair back and forth, whips his hair back and forth (lovely)

Honestly, I would believe in everything Xabi would say, he seems like such a credible person to me.

Admitting ones mistakes is one of the most important things and it is honest, so I am glad that they were admitted by the club.

and Kaka just being Kaka in the middle of this fight – gives hope to my heart;-)

and the coolest good thing – the game was pretty nice (until a certain moment which shall not be mentioned) -I am curious about the season.

When I read Sergio apologizing, awwww, no need for that!
And much props to Cris and Kaka for standing far from the fight.

I hope this all passes quickly, like all the previous shenanigans involving both clubs, so that we can move on and focus on the actual football. I’m really excited for the Liga to start, with what Madrid has shown as of late. Podemos! HALA MADRID!

FIFA awarded a WC Qualifying match to the opponent because Syria fielded a player who was not qualified. It also removed Syria from the running for WC. Can this happen to the Supercopa match because Cesc was not qualified?

Reading this after the I hope you missed it post makes my heart happy, thanks for this separation of posts Una. The Sergio Iker kiss is so cute!

With regards to Mou, I do believe that he has improved the team a lot but I still think that he should distinguish between defending the club and crossing the line with violence, bad behavior and certain things that he says in press conferences. He should understand that he is representing a great club and he should respect it’s image and seniority. That is why Mou is a dilemma for me, I like the guy but at the same time, I dislike how he acts sometimes.

I didn’t even realise that Morata was so tall! And on supporting Mourinho: to me he’s a human who has his faults but he’s our coach and therefore has my support even if I don’t always agree with his actions or opinions. The same can be applied to the club itself.

Sergio’s gesture to the fans is great, it shows what a great player and captain he is.

the sergio/iker kiss put hearts in my eyes. i LOVE them. and whilst it’s no secret i’m an iker girl through and through, sergio’s hair is just so shiny and pretty … i wonder why iker had the ‘i.casillas’ jersey on. did they think we’d confuse him with unai or something?

i love the iker/moratita pic (he’s MFC, too!) and squealed when he posted that on his facebook. seriously, iker’s facebook is the best thing to happen to the internet since your blog! 😀

bless kaka’s heart for staying out of it all. such a good boy. 🙂 (despite the sadness and frustration and anger the whole fight filled me with, i had to laugh at you circling all the players with their hands on their hips!)

speaking of good boys, sergio canales … he seriously looks angelic. not sure if it’s the smile or the eyes or the (normally fluffy) hair, but he’s cute like a little boy (which makes his hotness all the more distressing, in some ways!).

it is so weird to see cesc in a barca jersey! i’m happy for him, he wanted to be there (and i despise arsenal anyway), but still … weird!

Smiling Sergio…a gif(t) from the Gods. Try as I might I couldn’t get the pic to a screen saver. It’s time to replace the water polo shot, which replaced Smiling Sergio with the Water Bottle….
