#19 with 17 days to go…

Luka Modrić has really impressed me with his efforts to learn Spanish.  Just a few days after he joined the team, he was already trying to make an effort to speak castellano, telling the press after the Supercopa second-leg game that “yo soy muy contento por mi primero título en el Real Madrid” (“I’m very happy with my first title with Real Madrid”).  He made a couple of understandable mistakes, and was totally comprehensible.

And then just a few days ago, “El Partido de las 12” interviewed him after the Ajax game.  The reporter started off by telling the program that she was going to interview him in English “because he doesn’t speak too much Spanish yet.  He’s smiling, I don’t know if he understands me…” and then Luka responded, in Spanish, “I can speak (in Spanish).”  He went on to say that he understands some Spanish, and gave the first part of the interview in fairly good Spanish.  Of course, that included him using that favorite foreign footballer phrase “yo soy muy feliz.”  And according to the interviewer, he smiled throughout the entire interview!

Adorable and very impressive!

How has Luka Modrić impressed you?

I think he played really well against Ajax, and it was so cute how he celebrated Callejón´s goal after he provided the assist. I hope he continues to play that way. He also seems to be integrating into the team well.

He’s Lucky Luke! He arrived and won a title 10 minutes later and was so thrilled!

That was very endearing! Lucky people are always lovable 😉

i remember in the summer, all the furore surrounding his transfer — he REALLY wanted to come to madrid — and thought, ugh … i don’t like him already, because of all this hype and drama. but then he came and he’s slowly grown on me. i really like that he’s working hard to be assimilated, both in terms of culture and the team. i just wish he’d cut his hair, jajajaja! (you do know his nickname is ‘lady edith’, from downton abbey, right? 😉 he bears a striking resemblance to the actress who plays her, laura carmichael.)
