Luka Modrić has really impressed me with his efforts to learn Spanish. Just a few days after he joined the team, he was already trying to make an effort to speak castellano, telling the press after the Supercopa second-leg game that “yo soy muy contento por mi primero título en el Real Madrid” (“I’m very happy with my first title with Real Madrid”). He made a couple of understandable mistakes, and was totally comprehensible.
And then just a few days ago, “El Partido de las 12” interviewed him after the Ajax game. The reporter started off by telling the program that she was going to interview him in English “because he doesn’t speak too much Spanish yet. He’s smiling, I don’t know if he understands me…” and then Luka responded, in Spanish, “I can speak (in Spanish).” He went on to say that he understands some Spanish, and gave the first part of the interview in fairly good Spanish. Of course, that included him using that favorite foreign footballer phrase “yo soy muy feliz.” And according to the interviewer, he smiled throughout the entire interview!
Adorable and very impressive!
