Real Madrid in Murcia

May 18, 2011

The delegation from Madrid arrived in Murcia around noon today, and from there, they took a bus to Lorca, where they were received by the mayor in their visit to the city hall, and visited the Las Viñas neighborhood, the area most affected by last week’s earthquake.  The players will rest in their hotel until the game, which will take place at 19h in a sold out Nueva Condomina, with the exception of the captains and Cristiano Ronaldo, who visited some of those people injured during the earthquake in the hospital Virgen de la Arrixaca.

Several canteranos traveled with the team: Castilla’s Mandi, Dani Carvajal and Pablo Gil (who is from Murcia), as well as RMC’s Óscar Plano.  The first team is without the injured players, Marcelo and the three Argentines who have already returned to Argentina (Higuaín, Garay, Di María).

If you want to find a canterano, just look for Pepe!  As expected, Pepe stuck close to the canteranos, since he is their biggest cheerleader (along with Marcelo).

At city hall, the delegation posed with signs saying “Todos con Lorca” (“we are all with Lorca”; several members of the delegation including FP also put on stickers with those slogans on their jackets), signed the guest book and a few shirts, and spoke to and waved to fans from the balcony of the city hall.

Poor Esteban looks like he wants to join in, but just doesn’t quality for Four Musketeers status.

Chendo is from Murcia too, and how adorable are our players?

Iker told them, “we want to thank you for this welcome.  Actions are above everything else, including players and teams; that’s the most important thing.  We want to help you to forget what happened.  You all need it and you all deserve it.  We are all very happy to be here with you.”  Meanwhile, Sergio told the crowd, “I want to give my condolences to all the families who lost someone.  We’re here with affection and a desire to help you all.  We want things to turn out right and we hope you recover as soon as possible.”  But the most acclaimed player was of course Murcia native Peter Lion, who said a few emotional words to his paisanos: “although not as much as all of you, my family in Mula also felt the earthquake.  We’re with you, because we know how you feel.  Every Sunday you support us, now it’s our turn to support you.”

The team also signed autographs, posed for pictures and handed out besos as they headed to and from the city hall.

It looks like the running of the bulls!

After that, the players visited the Las Viñas neighborhood by bus, to see the damage first hand.  And while the rest of the team headed to the hotel to rest, Iker, Sergio and Cristiano, accompanied by Emilio Butragueño, went to the Virgen de la Arrixaca hospital to have a visit with those injured by the earthquake.

Is there anyone not holding up a mobile phone to take a picture of Iker?

It’s also great to see people are using humor to deal with this situation!  FP can certainly afford it.

And I know everyone misses Mou, so here he is.  I like the contrast between the gold and silver hair.

Several players also tweeted about the experience: Álvaro sent a big hug to everyone, Esteban tweeted a photo, and Sergio informed us that he, Iker and Cris are going to make a hospital visit, and also shared some photos (here and here).  And Iker somehow found the time to post a lot of things on Facebook, starting with this adorable photo of him and Pedro León!

However, his English could still use some help.  Here are some of the things Iker wrote: “Let Lorca to make a visit to his people who have suffered a lot these days” and “From the balcony of the City of Lorca we have tried to encourage all my colleagues and me. People showed affection. It’s funny, we come to give us heat and it was they that we have given to us.”  Though there is a wrong choice of word, the part about heat in the latter statement rings true, no?  Iker also managed to make a mistake in Spanish, calling Peter Lion a “marciano” (Martian) instead of a “murciano” (person from Murcia).  He later corrected himself and told us that Peter Lion had laughed at it too.  Take heart!

Some of you inform me that Iker is using Google translate to post in English.  Oh Iker, all you have to do is ask and I’d be more than happy to help you.

And it’s a good thing that some of the players wrote their jersey numbers under their signatures, because some of those signatures are completely and utterly illegible.  Iker’s “Casillas” is recognizable, but if Mesut’s signature did not have the “23” under it, I would think that somehow J. Lo found a way to sign the shirt.

It’s so nice to see the team and the whole RMCF organization (yes, even FP) do this. God bless Lorca and the families of the victims.

On another note, Iker posted a picture of him in the balcony. He’s posting in Spanish AND English now, but the English comes straight from Google Translate. I know because that’s what I use.

I’m almost convinced Iker used Google Translate (or the likes of it)! Because I copied + pasted what he wrote in Spanish onto Google Translate, and I got the exact results, aha! My purpose was to find out what he actually said though, so I suppose instead of “heat”, it should’ve been “warmth”?

really? i thought he looked a bit oily and greasy? he needs to grow his hair like he did in manchester. also, i’m beginning to realise white isnt his colour. clashes with his tan. red, now that is always beautiful on him (man u and portugal colours).

I was thinking moisturizer for his crows feet, all that tanning is no good!

As for what looks good on him, I think he would look better if he lost those belt buckles and wore properly sized clothes, but the white jersey is good to stay.

I really like that Iker’s posts have mistakes, it seems like he is writing the posts himself, even if with the assistance of Google 🙂

Una your blog has become so popular in the last 12 months that the club must be aware of it by now. I hope it is only a mater of time before they offer you the gig as Iker’s personal translator!

I think so too! Una, I bet you that some of the Real Madrid players know about your blog and read it sometimes (maybe to amuse themselves)…but you never know! 🙂

And I like the pics of Iker. Honestly, my first thought was Iker looks like he’s a king that’s going to give a speech to his citizens. I know he’s in an Addidas shirt, but still!

      Take care..

I think the people taking photos of Iker visited your blog and saw your profile appreciation section. Now they want their own collection of photos of Iker’s profile too. 😀

With everything that you’ve done in this blog and for your readers, I think being Iker’s translator would not be enough!!! 🙂 You should be the head of some media relations or something like that in RM. You could be the one doing the interviews because I know that you would be asking all the ~right questions. 😉

And I think that it is really sweet of Madrid to do something like this to help the earthquake victims. It makes me even prouder of the boys. 🙂

Agree! Iker’s Facebook posts are so much more interesting than those of Sergio Ramos. And I think he is quite addicted, posting several times a day! He can Google-Translate all he likes!

Una, I have been stalking your blogs for almost a year and have even backtracked to read all your posts in chronological order (that took a couple of months). You are doing an amazing job! Your writing and editing are excellent and keep me fascinated.

And yes, I suspect the RM crew must be stalking your blog. Maybe that’s how Iker is learning English!

Moments like these make me feel very proud of our boys and the club. So adorable and empathetic they are …

And concerning Iker and his posts – I think, making mistakes and behaving like an everyday facebooker makes him more palpable to his fans (with a very nice content in his uploaded pictures ^^)

Looking forward to the game tonight. I hope it will make the people of Lorca forget all what happened – at least for 90 minutes.

And I totally agree with cisarovna’s opinion about you being made Iker’s personal translator 🙂

I am loving reading Iker’s Facebook posts in English. It is like a puzzle trying to figure out what he really means. Plus, the literal translations are helping me learn some new meanings of words in Spanish.

Una, you should definitely apply for the translating job! Your fantastic blog is the best resume ever!

I’ve been reading Iker’s FB updates in English, and they have been amusing me non stop (in a good way). Una you should become Iker’s personal translator. I saw on FB that Fernando Llorente (or his FB) also welcomed Iker to FB.

This one brought a smile to my face, “We have finished now play charity match for Lorca. We tied at 2 but the least is the result. Thank people for coming to the field. I congratulate Carvalho, turns 33 today. Congratulations “grandpather”!” Love grandpather! Hee hee. But I love that he is trying.

The picture Sergio posted on Twitter (http://img.ly/4dgk) is adorable!! I love that Iker looks like he’s about to burst out laughing, his smile lines and Cris peeking out from the row behind, smiling mischievously. Adorable.

I love him!!!! I love him even more for his spelling and grammar mistakes, because I love that he doesn’t let a PR person post in perfect english on his behalf; it comes straight from him, errors and all. He really is too precious for words. *beams*

I think it was a really wonderful thing the team did for the people of this area, above and beyond what you could ask of them. I really, truly hope mou lets peter the martian (hahahaha!!) play tonight, of all nights.

    Love my boys!!

  19. May 19, 2011 02:22

I affected what Real Madrid’s players said to console Murcia.
It’s so beautiful when people care and love with others,,and they did it 😉

I’m sorry to hear that about this disaster..hope everything gonna be ok ^^

I love Iker wrote the post by himself and translated the post with Google. It reflects that many people in this world trust Google’s translator, including me. If Iker wants to learn, he can communicate with Mou in English. I believe it would be useful and effective. haha

  22. May 19, 2011 08:24

Haha so laughed about Ikers typo. LOL!

  24. May 19, 2011 12:15

oh, what a nice initiative from RM. I hope people in the region felt a bit better even if only for the time of the match. Nothing really helps in such dramatic situation, but at least they could have focus their thoughts on something else and I hope it brought some joy even for a while.

Moving to some less serious topic: I would have never thought that Iker will have a FB page, not to mention – that he would post anything or frequently.

But here I am surprised and in awe. Iker Casillas is the best thing that happened to Facebook in a long long time. I will risk and say that he’s the only reason I am checking my profile now.
