another note

November 29, 2011

Several posts and weeks ago, I wrote that I was considering giving this blog up, because I felt that people had become bored by it, which in turn dampened my own enthusiasm for continuing it.  Judging by your comments in response to that post, this doesn’t seem to be the case, and many of you also gave me some suggestions and feedback.  I just wanted to address some of that.

When I wrote that I was getting bored, what I meant was that I seemed to be producing the same types of posts, making the same observations, writing the same things over and over again.  I sensed the readers were in the same place, because people were commenting less and there just didn’t seem to be the same type of community as before.  This was why I considered stopping things.

However, all of you seem to want me to continue, and I’d like to do that, in part because as a good Real Madrid fan, I want to spread the fantastic parts of this club to as many people as I can, people that don’t have access to the same information as I do, whether due to language or location or time.  The other part is because I feel that we’ve built a good rapport here.

So, for the time being, I will continue, although I would also like to say that if I feel that my posts have become trite or hackneyed, I won’t continue, because I have high standards for myself and for this blog, and if I feel the quality is slipping alarmingly (my feeling now is that it has already peaked), then I rather stop posting than write crappy entries.  I want the time I dedicate to this blog to be worth it.

As for the suggestions, some people requested that I get on twitter.  Right now I have no plans to, because just keeping this blog updated takes up a lot of my spare time.  I don’t know how I’d add twitter into the equation without sacrificing some parts of this blog.  The same goes for tumblr.  Anyway, it seems to be geared more towards images and not words, and I like writing too much to give that part up.

Others suggested fewer posts.  I’m a bit of a perfectionist, in that I want to provide all the news so that hopefully when we win a big trophy (or three), we’ll have a record of the entire season to look back on in the future.  So if I do this, I want to do it as best I can, in the way that I feel would be the best.  There was also suggestions that I collaborate with other writers or open up to submissions.  The thing is, there’s a very specific way in which I’ve chosen to write this blog, and I would feel bad telling someone else to revise what they wrote or reject what they wrote because it doesn’t “fit” with my blog, so it’s easier for me to just be responsible for all the writing.

Several others asked me about the future of my other blog, “con la roja.”  Right now, with the national team only meeting once every several months, the commitment isn’t that great, so I will keep posting to it in the future.

I mentioned that there are other sites that do what I do.  What I meant is that you can find gifs and images very easily, the same kinds that I make and post about.  In fact, I discovered some of these sites when I was alerted to the fact that they were either “repackaging” my images and/or stealing my words, though of course they also had original content of their own.  However, most of you seem to think I have a unique voice and this blog is unlike others out there, so thank you for that.

I’d also like to add that I will do my best to respond to your emails as soon as I can, and that I’m always open to feedback.  With no midweek game this week, perhaps I’ll get a bit of spare time to do just that.

I hope I’ve cleared a few things up, and I’d also like to say, thank you very much for reading this blog.  I really do appreciate it.

i live in Indonesia which mean it has different times 6 hours with Madrid. and my television is kinda sucks, if the final whistle is blew, so that’s it. it’s done. your posts makes me know what is going on after that.
and una, i’ve recommend your blog to all madridista too with my twitter. and excuse my language is not a perfect english. 🙂 🙂 :*

I’m fairly new to your blog, having just begun reading/commenting (and the commenting only sparsely I’m afraid) over the last few months. That said, I’ve really come to rely on this site as a “one stop” Real Madrid portal. Sure, there are other people who translate some Spanish media items, and others who post gifs, and others who have fun images, but I read you because I can find everything I want right here in one place. I really value especially your translations of interviews and videos that I never would have even seen or found without you. I hope you’ll continue on–I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say that a bit of UnaMadridista is better than no UnaMadridista at all.

I have to say that your blog is one of the best football blogs around, and all the stuff you wrote here has been so incredibly helpful to me as a Madrid fan from Asia. It’s sad that there isn’t any La Liga games on TV and only a few people would watch football in my country. So it’s very hard to get any information about the club I love.
I just want to tell you that I’m so grateful for the effort you put on this blog, and everything you post, because it’s always a great pleasure to read your blog.

While I normally LOVE your blog (adore it, in fact, because of your unique voice and witty and intelligent take on all things RM), I really appreciate how you tied posts into to other things recently, like the himno or the body post or things like that. I’m not sure if that’s your definitive way forward, but I just wanted to say I liked the themed posts (especially as they relate to the history of Real Madrid – I’ll never tire of seeing the old pics).

Thank you again, Una, you are the best!

Your blog is unique, even if there are a lot of sites dedicated to this club (which is no surprise given the large support they have around the world). And indeed your blog is a great record of what went on in a season and we all got high hopes for this season!

I hope people credit your work, when they use it on their sites, because that’s the way to go.

Una. Dearest, fabulous Una. I salute you. Keep up the great work, do it all the time, or whenever you want/if it feels right. I won’t pressure you. I’ll just keep faithfully logging in every morning until the day you say ‘No Mas’.
Yes, there are others out there doing similar things, but you have a voice that we like. It’s just like anyone who wants to watch a certain person or series on TV, or a newspaper columnist/editor with a public following. It is because of that voice/perspective/opinion that we watch/listen/read to these things. The only difference is that most of these other venues are paying the people who are doing the talking.
You are, as yet, unpaid by your following ( i imagine). That’s where advertising schemes come in handy, but, you may not be willing to shill yourself off. That’s understandable. Maybe you should open a pay pal account… ;-p

you have raised a few valid points and I now understand better why you questioned continuing in the first place, but I am very happy you are willing to continue with this blog for the time being.
I also don’t think it is becoming redundant or too repetitive – of course some things will always be similar and not change much, but somehow there is always a new twist, or at least new evidence~ for long-standing characterizations, so as long as new material keeps flowing in (and there has been a lot more with the RM facebook being updated with hilarious stages photos before games, right?! not forget the trend of players willingly whoring themselves& their private lives out on twitter or fb respectively) it won’t ever be boring.
Of course you see these things around, naturally, but I love your commentary on them and I won’t get tired of reading your thoughts on all the topics that arise within the season.
Just because others gif stuff, too, doesn’t mean yours aren’t still the best – because they are!!! 🙂

I’m overjoyed to hear that you’re continuing with the blog, Una. Honestly, you’re doing such a stellar job with this blog, and I always wonder how you manage to find time to be so comprehensive — that too daily! I’ve a blog myself, and am well pleased with myself if I can manage to post on back-to-back days; editing pics + clips take an awful lot of time — and yours is brimming with them 😀 Your writing’s brilliant too, in perfect prose, which I love. Amazing, amazing work, Una.

I don’t really know of all those sites that are stealing your contents, and don’t think I’d bother to check on them. So, really, it’s all you… 🙂

Una, this is the most generous decision, so thanks a lot for not letting us down.
My dear, as you know, once your product is out there, you cannot control the way people use it. The web is full of people who appropriate others’ work. The case is especially rampant when you get into things like sport, art and cultural products.
This is not an academic source and those who steal have no authority above them to ask for references, etc..
What may console you, i think, is the fact that your blog is unique, really unique in terms of language, approach, issues and content. So things will be recognised, at least, by your followers.
By the way, I am on twitter and I got some posts from many people referring to your blog, so, it is not that gloomy picture.
I therefore, suggest that we (all of us) refer to our friends to read your blog and comment on it. This could be done through reposting your updates on our Facebook and twitter. I will do immediately!
    What do you think?
    Hugs

NEVER EVER stop I don’t care how “crappy” you feel it’s getting. I check this blog everyday for news and updates. This is the only reliable and neutral Real Madrid site i’ve ever stumbled upon and i’ve recommended it to several of my friends who are fans of this team. This blog is perfect for people like me who live out of the country and am not always in touch/have access to what is going on in Spain. I also find this is the only place where I can find accurate translations of articles, interviews, and videos.

This blog has also helped me this summer to plan when the team was coming to do their USA tour. Once I saw the dates posted on here I immediately booked my trip to Los Angeles and it was also nice to have the itnerary you posted to know what was going on while I was there.

I truly appreciate the time you take to work on this blog and i’m sure the thousands of visitors do as well. I understand it must be really time consuming and I admire you for taking time out of your day to bring happiness to thousands of online strangers. I hope this blog can last for many more years to come. I would understand if you needed to take a break or time off for yourself but please don’t leave us forever 😦

My Spanish is bad, so I’m so thankful for all the work you do.♥

One sentence of your entry made me think: “Anyway, it seems to be geared more towards images and not words, and I like writing too much to give that part up.”
I have the same impression in my community…

I want to say, I love that you are writing so much and enjoy every entry. For me a football blog is not only about pictures. I want information, things I never heard before and a few pics.;)

I’m from Sweden and i can`t Spanish, which means that i misses lot of information about Real Madrid despite reading lot of magazines, websites, blogs, etc. since most (and best) is in Spanish. That is why your blog the best things. Your blog is basically the link between Real Madrid and me! And I have many Madristas from Sweden who feel the same as me about your blog. We love your blog and hope you get on for years!

Una I think you are doing a magnificent job and would really hate for you to stop your blog. I live in the States were soccer news is hard to come by unless of course it’s mexican soccer than I can watch on the spanish stations. Real Madrid news is hard to come by so I am very grateful for your blog because I get to keep up with all the news not only about the team but also about the players life in general. I read your blog very day and miss it when you don’t post regularly. I have looked around and have really found your blog to be the best and I would really hate to have to go to another blog that is nowhere near as good as your blog is. Keep up the great job and please know that your work is very appreciated. Hala Madrid!!

Hi Una! I hope you’re having a great day! I am now, because you have chosen to continue! Thank you very much! 😀 I really feel that your blog is unique & it’s due to your writing & understanding & vision of Real Madrid CF.

I honestly believe you should be paid by Real Madrid because you have broadened their fanbase so much in other countries. They may have a problem with some of our “naughty” tendencies (that you understand & therefore provide to us exactly what we want, tee hee) but you really have done a service to The Club. That’s my opinion & I’m sticking to it! 😉

ps. I didn’t get to comment on the Javi(!!!) & Bart Simpson video, I loved it, I do adore them & that is just one more thing you understand about us. I’m glad to hear you are keeping up the Con La Roja blog as well. Best wishes & thank you so much, dearie!

Not that you need MORE confirmation of the incredible job you do, but I’d like to 2nd your idea of keeping the posts as a tribute to a successful year. This past offseason, I went back to your summer of 2010 preseason posts and read them in order all the way through the last game of the 2010/2011 season. I can tell you that I experienced the highs and lows all over again, and with even more feeling as I got to know the individual players, styles, and lives via your thorough posts and translated interviews. I can’t wait to do the same thing again next year.

Yay I’m really happy that you’ve decided to continue, Una 🙂 Trust me, we really appreciate what you do and no matter what other websites/blogs have up, it’s just not as detailed and all-encompasing and amusing and entertaining as yours.

You’re really witty and clever and your comments and sarcasm often put a smile on my face. and you don’t hesitate to criticize Madrid when they’re doing something wrong, although you’re a giant madridista, which is something that is really refreshing because a lot of people are either too madrid-loving that they can’t keep a clear head or they’re too critical.

I personally think that you shouldn’t collaborate like that with someone else because like you said, you have your unique writing style that we love and it wouldn’t be fair for you or the other person to change it and we love the way you write 🙂

So just, a big thanks (sorry for blabbing) because we truly, deeply appreciate your excellent work and we really hope that you continue! You’re the best, una 😀

    Dear una,

I want to cite what you write in your description “A BLOG ABOUT THE ASPECTS OF MADRID THAT INTEREST ME, UNA MADRIDISTA”. Thats what people love your for. What makes your blog interesting and unique. Dont change because people expect this or that! If you feel that some things are not interesting for you anymore or repetitive, you dont have to post them. Never forget that its your blog.

Im really happy you continue and Im sorry I have rarely commented lately but I do read and I love to read your blog. Hugs and Hala Madrid,

    Una!
I’m so glad you’re keeping up with the blog.
As for your concern that we are getting bored and not commenting – I can say for me that’s absolutely not true! I usually read your blog on my phone at school, so it’s harder to leave feedback.
But as someone who doesn’t live in Spain, I find your columns extremely informative, especially on the news front because:
    1) I don’t have access to the daily updates that come from Spanish news channels
    2) I don’t speak Spanish, and can only read a bit – and it’s difficult to understand a translator most of the time Your blog keeps me up to date in a VERY entertaining, and legible way.

I love the work you do, and I’m so thankful. Truthfully, while there are a lot of tumblrs about Real Madrid, none come close to being as informative and entertaining as yours!!!!

    Thank you!!!

Thank you. Salamat. Gracias. Merci . Danke.

Like so many fans on this side of the world, I try to wake up early or wait for the games in the wee small hours of he morning. I check goal, football365 and yahoo soccer for pre/post game analysis but it’s not the same as your ICYMI. I try to read AS and Marca to check up news on our boys but it’s not the same as your news tidbits. I read the articles and watch videos on the Spanish version of realmadrid.com, barely understanding what’s going on and it’s definitely not the same as your updates.
Your blog made me a better Madridista-not just someone who cheers the team when winning but loving them even more when they’re hurting. I love that you are willing to comment on RM’s weaknesses, whether it’s the team or the coach or the players or even higher management.

Muchas gracias for plodding on. Hugs all the way here from the Philippines.

Another greeting from the Philippines, where the live matches rarely ever start before 2am. I can’t always catch the matches so your ICYMI posts help me relive the experience, enriched by your discerning comments.

I first discovered Con La Roja during the World Cup and as the match replays were aired, I followed them while reading your blog from the start. Through you blog, I was able to relive the journey of the SNT with all its ups and downs towards victory! It made me love these boys.

Then I read Following Real Madrid from the first post also so I could experience the evolution of this team. In it, you have documented the Mourinho era of Real Madrid, and my hope is that you will have documented RM’s journey to victory of La Decima. So you may not realize it, Una, but your work does have historical value as told in your unique perspective.

It is precisely your high standards and values that make reading your blog worthwhile, enjoyable and utterly addictive. Because of you, I have fallen in love with each of our boys and you have converted me from a casual fan into a real Madridista!

This blog has brought me so much closer to the team, you have no idea. Living in Kenya and now in the US I really didn’t have access to a lot of information, much less any in English but reading your posts just makes me feel closer to Real Madrid as MY team instead of just a team.
I know there’s gifs and recaps elsewhere but for me, reading your thoughts and re-watching the moments you choose to highlight really round out the match-day experience for me. It just makes it so much better.

As for keeping it orderly, I know you want a record to look back on, but I must say, match posts must take a really long time to put together, so don’t feel obligated to put out a really long post if it’s a match that’s not very important or wasn’t very spectacular 🙂

I think part of the lower comment count is because we are still in a bit of a lowpoint of the season – nothing is really at stake yet.

Wait for next week’s Classico and the end of the season for things to get really heated again. I mean, Madrid is now winning easily against minor teams for the past months, not too much can be said of that.

However, beating greaseball Busquets is a whole different story!

    THANKS SO MUCH.

  95. November 30, 2011 07:12

    and we appreciate you! 🙂

i’m glad you want to continue and still have the desire to do so, and i appreciate the high standards you set for yourself, because it makes reading and participating that much more enjoyable. you’re right — there are loads of photos and gifs out there, and even lots of sites with commentary, some superficial and some technical. but there honestly is no one who crafts it all together the way you do. i can also appreciate that you have a specific voice and vision and methodology for your blog, which is why you don’t want or need any help to execute it as it’s easier to just do it all yourself (and … honestly? going on twitter or tumblr? i think that’s a little insane. the idea is to make things EASIER for you, not to add to your workload), even though it’s a lot to carry on your own. it’s a labour of love, definitely, but we’re lucky to benefit from it! thanks for reconsidering. 🙂

And from the details of every game you show us, I know you must try your best to give us the best post, I appreciate you never write about the unconfirmed rumors, which have a bad effect to our team, and you have your own though, if our player (coach) do something wrong, you would point it, because I know how much you love our team, we all want it to be a good team.
So thank you for not giving up this blog, you blog is so unique, I believe many madridista love this blog not only because the photo you choose, but we love your writing, your idea, if we can win something big this year (hopefully), at least we have a record of the entire season games, that must be memorable. Plus, as a newer Madrid fan (have only been one for 6 years), I learn every time I read your posts. Again, thank you thank you thank you!

It’s not just language, time or location. It’s also your perspective, your personal touch of humour, and your sense of detail. This is why I come many times per week to this blog, as I’m sure many others do.
I know it’s super challenging to keep continuity and freshness. But please don’t give up on us! We love you for all the work you do! Take breaks whenever you want but please don’t stop for good.
PS: I like the social media suggestion. Why don’t you try to use Twitter just for linking your blog updates at first, then see if you can do more?

Why would you give this blog up Una. Your posts have more information than any other blogs i’ve seen of this Beautifull club. I love what you are doing for us (the fans of Real madrid) and how you are creating such a beautiful madridista family just with this blog. You have created such a joy for the die hard fans in a lot of countries.
Thank you for sharing so much information that we read with lots of joy. Thank you Una. Hala Madrid.

I’m actually not a fan of Real Madrid, but I love your style of writing and the humour you manage to inject into your pieces. I’m sure if most readers were just after results of matches, etc., we’d be able to go to other sites. But you tell us about the players themselves and you post photos most people wouldn’t be able to find. Of course, along with translating magazine articles and others. Plus, I love how you’re not just writing about results and the technical side of the game. You make us love Real Madrid as a team and the players individually! Like I said, I’m not an RM fan but I’ve grown to love a some of the players due to you and your wonderful posts! So I’m really really glad you’re not stopping this blog. Thanks, Una! 🙂

I really love your blog, I visit here every day but have never left a comment before, but you are one of my main sources of information about Real Madrid. 🙂

    Hi,

I am from Singapore and we do not get many La Liga news (Barclays Premier League dominates my country haha!). So it’s a blessing I found your blog! Thanks so much for the news and photos (especially Sergio Ramos)!
