in case you missed it – the tie that feels like a win edition

November 4, 2010

In case you missed it – AC Milan vs. Real Madrid [2010-11-03].

It was suspenseful and a bit unfair, but we are through to the round of 16, and if we get one more point in group play, we’ll be the leaders of the group.  The two remaining games are at Ajax on Nov. 23, and at home vs. Auxerre on Dec. 8.

The hero of the night was of course Peter Lion.

He even looks a bit like a lion in this picture, as he has the mane, and is roaring!

One. The goals were great, and both came resulted from excellent passes as we were getting ready to take a break, and in the case of Peter Lion’s, as we were losing hope and facing our very first defeat of the season.

Two. If the goals were great, then the goal celebrations were epic.

For Pipa’s goal, the celebration started with what looked to be a square dance move between Sergio and Gonzalo, which the cameraman did not capture, but luckily, the photographers did.  And then later on with the group, we once again saw a lot of head rubbing, which seems to be their preferred method of celebrating goals at the moment (they’d end up with a lot of gel and other hair products on their hands though, considering how much our players use).

Pipita entered Madrid’s record book by scoring the club’s 700th goal in the Champions League.  Guti had scored number 500 in 2000 and Becks had the honor of scoring number 600 in 2003.  So, it only took three years to score 100 goals between numbers 500 and 600, and seven years for numbers 600 to 700?  That just shows how awful we’ve been in the CL in the last eight years.

When Peter Lion scored, the players erupted off the bench and ran down the sideline (check out the person dancing along on the sideline on the left gif).  It was great that the two players that the press had made out to be “dead” to Mourinho, Karim Benzema and Pedro León, combined for this very important goal.  ¡Toma!

But the prize for best celebration went to none other than José Mourinho, with this little victory dance.  He added to the fun when he rushed over to remove Raúl Albiol from the goal celebration in order to get him into the game, to provide some last minute defense.  Mou even tried to help Albiol remove his vest, without any success.

Jordi Codina congratulated Pedro León via twitter, saying, “I’m so happy for Pedro León!!!  He deserves it!!!!”  Yes he did!

Pedro León’s goal was the first goal scored by a Spanish player this season.  He said after the game, “the most important thing about the goal is that it helped the team.  I’m very happy that we got the tie because we deserved it.”

Three. A focus on boots.  This will be the last time we see Cris in the pink boots, as he’s scheduled to debut his leopard ones this weekend against Atleti.  But will Mesut Özil also be changing his?  I’m sure he’s lower on the Nike pecking order than Cris, along with everyone else.

Four. The Cristiano section.

At one point during the game, Cris lifted his shirt to wipe off sweat.  Once again, the cameraman did not get the shot we wanted, but luckily the photographers did.  Wow.

More from Cris, doing my least favorite gesture and some bicicletas.  In addition, it wasn’t his finest day on the field, in terms of acting.

And it appears that Cris has returned to his previous hairstyle!  I prefer this one, which doesn’t scream fashion (in the negative Spanish way).

Five. For me, no post is complete without some Iker.  Here, we have him warming up before the game (I like the black shorts for providing a respite from all the green), and his reaction after the first Milan goal.  Doesn’t it look like he’s praying to God, asking Him to help out San Iker and his followers?

Six. My beloved Zizou was at the game, taking the seat next to JV in the palco and relegating El Buitre to the second row.

His first day of work as the link between the club and the players was yesterday, when he met with Mou and the players at the hotel in the afternoon.  During the game, he went back to his old role as he sat in the box with the directors.

According to Marca, Zizou ran into Marco Materazzi in the hotel (Materazzi was visiting Mou; see below), the first time they had come face to face since that infamous World Cup final.  They greeted each other and at first their dialogue was a bit cold, but then it warmed up and it appears they made peace, because they ended with a hug.  Yay!!!

Seven. Marcelo was quite chatty throughout the game!  He and Ricardo Carvalho talked through the entire Champions League hymn, and then as the players came out for the second half, he was seen yapping it up with Sergio.  I wonder why Sergio’s gripping Marcelino’s wrist?

Eight. Pepe exchanged shirts with Ronaldinho after the first half.  Why then?

Nine. The boys in their trajes before the game.  Very nice.

Ten. Some pregame moments – Mou rallied his players, Sergio greeted Milan’s players and Iker made some weird facial expressions.  Was he warming up his mouth to be able to shout the equivalent of “Guti, Guti, GUTI!!!”?  Perhaps it was be “Özil, Özil, ÖZIL!!!!”?

Eleven. Sergio hair really does look so sleek, shiny and soft.  It’s begging to be touched.

Twelve. Sami vs. Sergio, in the battle of aerial moves.  Sergio got very high, since his foot got to the level of Ibra’s head, and Ibra is 1.95m tall!

I’m so happy to finally have a Sami Khedira moment to include!  This is his first real appearance in an ICYMI post.

Thirteen. The Xabi Alonso pose section.™

Looks like Xabi decided to do a lot of pointing and hands-on-hips last night.

PS – What in the world did Xabi do to make Howard Webb hate him so much?  Exhibit A: the World Cup final.  Exhibit B: minute 61, last night.

Fourteen. The Mou section.

Right before the game, Mou was looked bored, and had his feet propped up.  But as soon as the game started, he became the picture of concentration.

Other fun moments: chewing gum, and doing what looks to be a sarcastic version of that Cris goal celebration.

Mou said after the game that Pedro León had scored a “historic goal” and that he was very happy with Benzema, and that if he keeps this up, then he might have to give him a place in the starting lineup.

I also loved what Mou said about the rest of the team: “we have a fantastic group, and sometimes the people on the bench are even more involved in the game than those on the field.  I couldn’t be happier with my players.”

And it’s not only his current players that he loves, but some of his former ones as well:  Mou received the visits of Sammy Eto’o, Julio César, Paolo Orlandoni and Marco Materazzi, as well as that of his former assistant Giuseppe Baresi, at Madrid’s hotel in the morning before the game.

Fifteen. Looking ahead:

– the players have the day off today, with training resuming tomorrow ahead of Sunday’s derbi madrileño.

– Rubén de la Red and Jorge Valdano held a press conference today at Valdebebas, where Rubén announced his retirement from football.

– meanwhile, the Real Madrid Foundation will hold the ALMA awards tonight at 20h, at the Teatros del Canal.  Rafa Nadal and Alfredo di Stéfano will receive awards, and the entire team is expected to be there, even though they have the day off.

      haha that celebration was fun! 😀

    EPIC – not only the celebrations were epic, but this entire blog entry is EPIC, Una!!! Excellent, so excellent! I feel as if I saw the whole game (with its most important parts), and not only 7 minutes, like I did LOL

    I will say it all over again, I am really adoring TSO with every game more and more! I am very happy for the players who scored and for Karim too.

    The gifs are awesome, the Serhio-Pipita dance -so cool and Sergio of course -awesome as always.

    Is it only me or is Xabi becoming more fierce lately? I mena, classy as he is, he seems to be getting a bit more aggressive on a field than usual and I admit I find it hot. LOL

    Last but not least -I’d love to see the meeting of Materazzi and Zidane! I love Zizou forever and always!!! and that world cup final 2006 was legendary!

    PETER LIONNNNNN!!!!!! Hell yeah he was the hero of the night!!!! I had skipped class for this game and when we were heading into the last couple min and looking at what mightve been our first defeat…I was.Not.Happy. But then POW! Benzema to Pedro Leon and craziness ensues 😉 The look on Gattuso’s face was another epic moment haha

    Sergio was just adorable celebrating with Pipita, thanks for the gif of the partial square dance celebration…it looks like Pipita was going for one more turn but was denied by Sergio lol awww next time!

    Mou is so freaking crazy! But I LOVE him 😉 As if his victory leap wasnt enough entertainment he goes and adds his little punches, topped off with sticking his tongue out for extra oomph! Now as for his effort with Albiol’s vest, I think he needs to stick around when the players are exchanging jerseys…so in a short amount of time we’ll have a half naked team before the cameras turn away!

    “Sergio hair really does look so sleek, shiny and soft. It’s begging to be touched.” Much like the rest of his body….begging to be touched that is, because I dont think he’s soft anyyyywhere 😉

    Thanks for the great post, Una, and btw – do you have some gifs of the “attacks” on Xabi? Not that I like to see him suffer, but one of them was actually funny (when some Milan player looked like he was riding Xabi).

    Thank you!

    Una, as ever, you make these matches infinitely more interesting with your recaps! Muchas gracias!

    What a nail-biting 2nd half… and if Milan had won, it would really have been ree-dunkulous.

    Anywho, some negs for me:
    – HOWARD WEBB and his troops. EH-PIC FAIL –>
    You know the game’s already half-screwed when the first thing you see on TV makes you whimper in distress: Webb’s infamous bald head waiting in the tunnel;
    – The pitch. It’s a conspiracy, I tell you;
    – Iker (and Pepe) having a ‘mare;
    – Cris making a meal out of that foul (ahh Cris pls no more of that!)…
    – Green lasers. Uncool;
    – Inzaghi’s unsporting out-of-nowhere shove on Alonso from behind. Xabi practically left an impression of his classy but grimacing face on the turf
    (Yup, Una… seriously, I think there is a correlation between Xabi getting beat up and having Webb on the same pitch);
    – The fact that I missed Özil’s spark in the 2nd half! Do.Not.Like.;
    – Milan’s poor showing in the dying minutes of the game, running the clock down with nonexistent injuries (if Cris got whistled at for playacting, then Pirlo and co. should also get their share of boos… from me, since San Siro were obviously not obliging);

    Some plus for me (aside from the goals & lovely goal celebrations):
    – Zizou! (wish they showed how he reacted to the goals);
    – As Una’s “The Mou section” attests: the camera (triggered by Mou-tion sensors… ‘kay, too much) that was apparently labeled, “For TSO Only” – trained solely on said manager while he’s sat on the bench;
    – Di Maria. Tremendous workrate. This man deserves more love. Oodles more;
    – An acrobatic Sergio Ramos (thanks for that gif, Una!);
    – The Sergio Ramos side-eye to Ibracadabra [any hopes you have a gif of that?? ;-)]. Menacing – definitely Shades of Torres. But I still nearly choked on a popcorn;
    – The commentator bellowing, “Iizzzlaaataan!” at one point in a Crackovia-esque way;
    – How Xabi lost a little bit of his cool (señor classy definitely needs to be more animated…. elegantly, of course);

    – And the winner: Mou celebrating along the touchline and practically mauling a hapless Albiol (it’s official…I love love Mou!).

    EPIC POST IS EPIC! I missed the second half because I was already too sleepy when the game started so I ended up sleeping! Seriously, when Zizou came on the screen I was like 😀 😀 :D! Cris is a fantastic player but one thing I can’t stand is his fake theatrical act whenever he’s tripped or falling! And Gattuso needs to calm his tits, really.

    as always i love this team. our players on the bench so involved when they could be pouting their not on the field.

    AND CONGRATS PETER LION!!!! thank you for saving us from defeat!
    and congrats to pipa. most deserved to go down in the record books even if he’s not having a record season thus far. for all the bailing out he did for us the last few years.

    I never lost hope yesterday. It was an interesting second half but we were able to make it a tie, and as this article perfectly says, it felt like a win.

    Loved the game and, IMO The Ramos was on fire, i never get enough of him playing, and not only because he is gorgeous but his skills with the ball are amazing. Controls and passes seem the easiest thing to do when you look at him.

    Allez Karim, keep up with the good work, the team and the fans will always support youuuuu 🙂

    + I know that Eto’o was a blaugrana some times ago but i love this player. Speaking of his relationship with Mou, i remembered a funny moment from Serie A with Eto’o getting a Y card and Mou who could’nt stop laughing. Laughing Mou is kinda sexy really 😉

    1. Sergio and Sami’s aerial skills are KILLER. There’s some definite “crouching tiger, hidden hotties” stuff going on that I *fully* endorse. (Also, I greatly admire Sergio’s ability to point his toes and maintain excellent extension whilst airborne. Though the landing is a little inelegant.)

    2. Cris, babe. The hair. “Original” is not a good thing. Oh, what’s that? You have abs? Nevermind then, I take it all back. Just… push the shirt higher… like that… perfect!

    3. Sergio and Pipita’s square-dancing celebration – is this what Mou is teaching them in those closed training sessions? Choreography? Or do they take time after training to brainstorm new goal celebrations?

    4. Peter Lion saves the day! He really does resemble a lion in that photo, but uf… what a goal!

    5. Howard Webb, why are you such an evil, evil man? Do you take pleasure in people beating the crap out of our precious Xabi Alonso? Are you jealous of how classy he is?

    6. Iker, my man, I know how you feel. If it would help, I’ve even (rather blasphemously) turned a Padre Nuestro into a prayer to San Iker… I do *love* the green top/black shorts combo, however. Now if we could only do something about the lime green boots and gloves…

    I couldn’t help to notice that Karim ran to the sideline with open arms.. who was there waiting for him?

        • November 5, 2010 14:54

          Ok, it’s not Albiol but it’s definitely not Lass either because he wasn’t even in Milan as he wasn’t called up for the game. It’s Diarrá.

    That was just great to watch, wasn’t it? I was literally at the edge of my seat at the ninety minute mark; it just didn’t feel like it was over for us at that point. Peter, you’re awesome!

    I’m really loving the group celebrations. There’s nothing better that seeing your team work as a unit; it all looked so natural! Also, congrats to Pipita for the 700th goal, and a big pat on the back for Angel who helped him achieve that.

    LOL! Mou’s celebration was classic! Trying to strip off Raul’s clothes was hilarious, I thought he was going to join the group hug, haha.

    What, no Oscar nominations for Cris this time? Oh well..Yay..My skin’s already writhing at the thought of his Safari boots..Funny how only he gets made fun of by commentators for the pink boots when other players who wear similar ones are completely overlooked 😕

    Wow, I just want to squeeze Sergio’s bulging biceps in the second pregame gif 😀

    Once again, fantastic review, Una. “ICYMI” – Oh my God, I’m totally using that from now on!

    Also, completely unrelated, but at this point I’m certain that I’m failing the series of exams I’m currently sitting. Why? Well, yesterday there was a guy wearing a Sergio Ramos RM shirt two seats in front of me. Needless to mention my level of concentration throughout the entire exam..

    • November 5, 2010 12:16

    or did anyone else notice Mou reject a RM player at the end of the game when all the players hug/talk/congratulate/trade shirts…I don’t remember who it was but Mou was greeting players from both teams and one of his own came up to him but he kinda just shoved him lightly on the chest to greet an AC Milan player…maybe my eyes were playing tricks, no?
